Reuters Headline: What The?

There’s a Reuters article in the morning paper with the headline, "GOP aims to defend anti gay marriage law."

Excuse me but your bias is showing.

Reuters is referring to DOMA, the defense of marriage act, which is not an anti-gay marriage law.  It does not prevent a state from passing a same sex marriage law.  It is a federal law that allows states to define marriage for themselves and does not require them to recognize any form of marriage which the majority of that states residents may object to.

This bothers the left, the uniformed, and liberal leaning media outlets like Reuters because they view marriage as a right. Marriage is not a right, it is a rite.  And the Constitution does not mention marriage so the states are essentially free to define it as they wish based on things like age, relationship, or any other factor for which they might express an interest.

While we could debate the constitutionality of any State regulating legal unions (in or outside the defense of any mutually agreed upon contract) it is still not outside their power to do so.  And DOMA does not prevent marriage.  It prevents the federal government from defining it for the states–which if I am not mistake is protected by the US constitution.

The GOP’s interest is a result of the Chief Executive refusing to defend the law simply because they object to it.  But we also know that Obama’s administration objects to state sovereignty so this is just an natural extension of their goal to undermine federalism and promote central planning.  The Republicans should be commended for standing up for the states, a point that will go unobserved or unreported from any of the left-leaning media.
