“I’ll get back to you on that”

I posted this last night upon returning from the Rochester (NH) 9/12 US Senate candidate debate (Republican) last night:

…NOW, this was a Constitutionally based crowd – THEY came up with the questions and NOT the moderators.  They KNOW this stuff better than the candidates – even better than most lawyers.  All night long we had, from the candidates, a battle of "who can read the Constitution right and better" – and I loved it and so did the crowd.  However, when Mr. Binnie implied that the "separation" was in the Constitution, I could feel the crowd go "Oh really?".

And then Jeff Chidester correctly challenged Mr. Binnie to explicitly state where in the Constitution those words are (note: they…

…don’t – only in a letter to two Baptists in CT – can you name the author of this now contentious Letter and what the issue was?).

Sidebar:  And I think Jeff was and is right to have done so.  It was asked respectfully, it was appropriate for the crowd, it was in line with all of the other questions that truly probed the candidates’ knowledge of the Constitution and how it should be applied to today’s current events and how they would do things if elected.  Given that the focus of the evening was really the Constitution, it worked.  If I had been the moderator, I would have done exactly what he did.

Well, Mr. Binnie didn’t take too kindly to that follow up question – and it showed.  And the audience saw and heard the ire in his voice…

But then to try to bluster your way out of it, by saying "I’d just call a lawyer" didn’t seem to be what the crowd would allow (first time runner or not) – this was a real basic type question.

At the debate, it was clear that the focus of the questions submitted by the group’s members concerned the issues of the day but focused through the lens of the Constitution.  I stand by my statement, in this blogger’s eye, the question, given the forum and the other questions, the question was valid and, indeed, warranted.

If Mr. Binnie or his staff wish to respond, I’m happy to make time and space available for that.

Filed not under US Senate but under Constitution.
