Waste

by Steve MacDonald

I got a letter today from the US Census.  As a joke, I mockingly said to my wife, "I bet this is a letter telling me about how I’m going to be getting a letter."

She laughed.

That’s exactly what it was.

Dear Resident:

About one week from now. you will receive a 2010 Census form in the mail.

When you receive your form. please fill it out and mail it in promptly.

Your response is important.  Results from the 2010 Census will be used to help each community get its fair share of government funds for highways, schools, health facilities, and many other programs you and your neighbors need. Without a complete, accurate census, your community may not get its fair share.

Thank you in advance for your help.

Sincerely,

Robert Groves

Director, U.S. Census Bureau.

Well.  How much did we spend to send that to how many hundreds of millions of people?

And check out the language.  "Fair share" not once but twice.  Government funds for schools, blah-blah-blah.

Translation.  We’ll be fiscally raping you.  If you are to have any hope of seeing any of whatever is left after we filter it through the massive, inefficient bureaucracy we are building at your expense, you’d best fill this out or you and your neighbors are SOL.

Sincerely,

Ministry of Redistribution

They sent me a letter to send me a letter.

That letter lies – it was about 3 weeks for us (we got the letter 3 weeks ago and the census form yesterdy). Additionally, they spent $15/hr to have someone hand deliver it (we are apparently in a low return area). They could have saved the money on the first letter and then just handed me the census form when I went in to apply for a job at the census.
