Laura Bush: George Bush 'Owes' Obama Silence

While she said it is former Vice President Dick Cheney's right to challenge the Obama administration, former first lady Laura Bush said her husband, former President George Bush, believes he "owes President Obama his silence on issues, and that there's no reason to second-guess any decisions that he makes."

"I think [Cheney] feels obligated. You know, these are issues that are really important to him, and he knows a lot about them," Bush told "Good Morning America" today in an exclusive interview from the former first family's Dallas home, referring to Cheney's recent criticisms of the current administration's national security policies. "So you know, I understand why he wants to speak out."

I politely disagree; in response, I have a 8 word answer:

Jimmy
Carter
Bill
Clinton

Have they been silent?

GWB is keeping his powder dry. As might be best for all former presidents during the early days of a new administration. Obama is doing just fine discrediting his own rhetoric and flimsy posturing by his adoption of GWB's policies. Cheney's circumstance is significantly different. He supported and advocated policies but did not decide. GWB was the decider. Cheney can again play the role of advocate, and that may mean defender, even from outside the current administration. Indeed, he is free to praise and to criticize and it is on that basis that his credibility is established and maintained. GWB had to make the tough decisions that Obama now cannot dodge. Prompting the new administration this way or that is what Cheney has already proven himself to be effective at doing on the public stage. It is a purdential judgement whether or not GWB could be effective in that sort of role just by speaking out one way or the other. Afterall, he made his decisions and stands by them. That speaks volumes and, in the longer term, will give him more credibility again should he speak out under extraordinary circumstances. Keeping his powder dry - saving his ammunition -- is a luxury that an elected President does not really have when choosing when and how to expend his political capital. While Obama has portrayed himself as in a rush, rush, rush -- while in fact backtracking -- GWB has remained steadfast and is known for that characteristic, for good or for ill. Anyway, I enjoy your blog and will return to read often. Cheers, Chairm Ohn.
