Just as in Britain, Canada, New Zealand, Sweden, and others, Universal Healthcare is ALL about control and money – and the State decides! There will be NOTHING pretty about it regardless what the ideologues pushing more Statism believe (after all, who can care more for you and your family than the Nanny State?). Here’s this from Jeff at RedState:
In March, Georgia, Florida, and Alabama joined in an appeal of a 2008 U.S. District Court ruling that a patient’s physician was better positioned – and better qualified – to make decisions about that patient’s medical treatment than state bureaucrats.
The case centers on Callie Moore, a disabled teenage girl living in Georgia. A stroke Callie suffered in utero left her suffering from multiple conditions, including cerebral palsy and mental retardation. For the last decade, she has received around-the-clock in-home nursing care for her medical conditions.
IN 2007, THOUGH, the state of Georgia cut coverage of Callie’s in-home care by 15%, from 94 hours a week to 84 over the objections of her attending physician, who was intimately familiar with her case and her needs. State officials (who were not medical professionals) cited disagreement with the attending physician about just how much care Callie needed as the primary reason for this reduction in care.
Callie’s mother filed suit in 2007, arguing that the state had no right to contradict the orders of her personal physician and limit her treatment. However, because Callie receives her medical treatment under Medicaid, the joint federal-state administered health coverage program for low-income individuals and families, Georgia officials argued that Callie’s care was subject to rationing, as state bureaucrats’ need to ensure Medicaid resources were allocated “fairly” superseded her doctor’s care prescription or her personal medical needs.
Conservatives RIGHTLY have a problem with the Progressives ill-fated notion that Universal Healthcare will bring a Healthy Utopia to us all. Just in this single instance (and I bet I can find more if I start trying – think low lying fruit), we see Big Government (who will be in charge) leveling the two primary accusations against giving aid – money and equality.
Problem? There is no way that there will EVER be enough $$ to provide total equity – to say or think otherwise is a fraud. Time, money, resources – a three legged stool in which Government will use Wait Time to make up for a lack of $$ and resources.
Remember the poor conditions at the VA’s Walter Reed hospital? Extrapolate!
Also, there is this:
More and more of my fellow doctors are turning away Medicare patients because of the diminished reimbursements and the growing delay in payments. I’ve had several new Medicare patients come to my office in the last few months with multiple diseases and long lists of medications simply because their longtime provider — who they liked — abruptly stopped taking Medicare. One of the top mammographers in New York City works in my office building, but she no longer accepts Medicare and charges patients more than $300 cash for each procedure. I continue to send my elderly women patients downstairs for the test because she is so good, but no one is happy about paying.
The problem is even worse with Medicaid. A 2005 Community Tracking Physician survey showed that only 50% of physicians accept this insurance. I am now one of the ones who doesn’t take it. I realized a few years ago that it wasn’t worth the money to file the paperwork for the $25 or less that I received for an office visit. HMOs are problematic as well. Recent surveys from New York show a 10% yearly dropout rate from the state’s largest HMO, the Health Insurance Plan of New York (HIP), and a 14% drop-out rate from Health Net of New York, another big HMO.
Universal Healthcare absolutely depends on the current healthcare provides to take a larger and larger haircut. Think that the bankers jumping ship from the TARP institutions is a flood? You ain’t seen nothin’ yet!
Obama and crew will not take U.H. on full frontal like Hillary did – they are going to compete, via tax dollar subsidies that will drive the competition out, leaving government as the only supplier and therefore the Monopoly:
That’s not all. Obama and other Democrats now talk about health care in a more appealing fashion. "They’ve co-opted Republican rhetoric on health care," a leading Washington lobbyist says. They’ve learned this from extensive polling. Would voters like the option of choosing between employer-based health insurance and a government insurance program? Of course they would, particularly when the word "public" is substituted for "government."
And rather than replace employer-purchased insurance, the "public" plan would merely "compete" with it. The competition might not last long, as we discovered in 1965 when Medicare drove private insurers out of business and quickly became the only plan for seniors. That’s exactly the effect a government health insurance option would have now. By offering cut-rate fees and drug prices–it wouldn’t need to make a profit–it would soon clear the field of competitors.
So, will the Justice Dept go after Obama for anti-trust activities in healthcare…never mind, too much Mtn Dew again…..
