Voting on a sham – the appearance of drilling without the reaon to do so

by Skip

Doug’s post of yesterday about Jeanne Shaheen’s energy policy caught my eye.  Now add my post yesterday about Democrat lawyers trying to shutdown free speech on the airways (BTW, I’m all for the Fairness Doctrine – as long as it is applied to ALL media and in equal doses – THAT will fix the Liberal gag-in-hand-ers!)

So, with that mind set, I re-read this:

Smartly increase domestic production. Jeanne Shaheen wants to smartly increase domestic production of oil in a way that benefits American families and small businesses.

So, given a lawyer-like eye (and I don’t play one on the ‘Grok), look at the operative word – SMARTLY.  As opposed to what – stupidly?  Wantonly?  Actually, if you now mix in the current bill in Congress that may be voted on today, the operative word may be niggardly (go ahead, you PC Police, go look it up here).

It’s nothing but a dodge – appear to now be for drilling, right?  Problem is, the oil is somewhere else.  From NRO:

Today’s Greenwire (subscription required) reports that the House is expected to vote as soon as tomorrow on Democratic legislation that would “allow drilling more than 100 miles from the Atlantic and Pacific coasts, and as close to 50 miles from the shore if coastal states agree to it.

[snip]

Our friends at the Institute for Energy Research (IER) posted a devastating exposé of the Pelosi plan. As announced last week, the plan would:

  • Permanently ban access to about 97 percent of the undersea oil lying within 50 miles of the California coast.Continue the ban on energy production in the Eastern Gulf of Mexico.
  • Impose a brand-new ban on oil and gas leases in Alaska’s coastal waters out to 50 miles.
  • Not allow states that approve new leases beyond 50 miles to share royalties with the federal government, thus stripping any financial incentive for states to stand up to environmental pressure groups, who will continue to agitate against any new oil and gas operations offshore.

The plan also includes poison pill provisions that President Bush is on record as opposing, such as new taxes on oil companies and a first-ever nationwide renewable-energy production quota for the electric power sector.

Then, being a numbers guy, I loved the chart that shows how two-faced the Democrats are on this.

DRILL ME THAT OIL!  Problem is, the charts show how little oil Pelosi (and Shaheen) really wants us to be able to drill for:

See where the estimated oil is?  Yeah, real close.  Where does Pelosi and Shaheen want to drill – sure thing – real "smartly" – see those red and yellow areas above?  Yup, you got it!

Yeah, more of the same.  Instead of drilling where it is, they only want to allow drilling where it ain’t.

Great energy policy, gals!

You know, they make all kinds of claims that is will take 10 years to get "new oil" flowing through new drilling.  Afer all, according to them, alternative energies will solve all of our energy needs!  However, they always, and conveniently, leave off the fact that most of these "new" energy sources have been around for years and probably will not be available at competitive pricing for at least 10 years.  True, lots of progress and there’s a lot of promise in a lot of areas.  The ugly truth is, without the tax breaks and credits, these new energy sources would dry up quicker than the cold is now coming to NH.

Trust me, I know this.  In the 1970s, I bought solar equipment for space heating (thermosiphoning air panels – worked well but expensive) and hot water (not as well, real interesting to watch as the concentrating collector swiveled to follow the sun, but a horror story to keep working when the company that made them went out of business just as soon as the legislation that artifically supported them sunsetted as well.

Yup, another great job by Government trying to choose "winners" in the marketplace".  Sure, go ahead and take away the tax breaks / credits now given to the oil companies – just do the same for all energy companies.
