Tancredo “gets it”…

Tom Tancredo

A rain-soaked Tom Tancredo speaks to a gathering in Franklin, NH back in ’05

As the general election campaign starts in earnest, many of those formerly in the race have been popping up here and there, endorsing or recommending the "presumptive nominee" of their respective party. Last night Rudy Giuliani was on Fox, discussing the economy and John McCain. This is no surprise because, as previously reported here at the ‘Grok, he said more than once during the primary season that if he himself wasn’t running, he would be supporting McCain.

There is a former candidate out there, however, that has indicated he will vote for the Arizona Senator, who is truly a real surprise: Tom Tancredo. Recall that last October, he stated,

"You know, I’ve said I don’t know how many times, that I am absolutely tired and sick and tired of being forced to go to the polls and say I’m going to make this choice between the lesser of two evils. I really don’t intend to do that again. I am hoping, of course, that whoever we nominate will be the principled flag carrier for the Republican Party. But if that is not the case, no, then I will not support them."

That was then. Fast forwarding to the present, the Colorado Congressman has changed his tune, recognizing that whatever issues he has with Senator McCain, they pale when compared with the Democratic alternative. In what was basically an under-reported story until noticed by ABC News’ Jake Tapper writing at his Political Punch blog, Tancredo stated back in April, as reported at the Ttime in the Rocky Mountain News, that he will be voting for John McCain. When I saw this, I was both surprised, and pleased, that he has come to this conclusion. I’ve always admired Mr. Tancredo for his honesty and bravery with respects to some of the more touchy issues facing our country, especially on demographic and immigration matters. It’s good that he recognizes the importance of keeping a Barack Obama from entering the White House.

"Sometimes I say to myself, ‘Can I really do this?’" Tancredo said of supporting McCain. "And then you listen to Obama or Hillary and say, ‘Yeah, I have to.’"

If only those still aboard the McCain Derangement Express would see it the same way…
