I just don’t know what it is about the West when Multiculturalism is held up in such a way to be the highest value in Western society.
Somebody ought to tell these folks that for multi-culti to work, it has to be more than unilateral (us to them) in that it has to be multilateral (them back to us). From Ireland:
Muslim refuses shake, loses prize
Alinoor Ahmed Sheikh, a Somali based in an asylum hostel in Tralee, was to have been honoured for his work raising funds for Amnesty International at a ceremony last Thursday organised by the Africa Centre in Dublin. The event was designed to highlight the positive work done by refugees and asylum seekers in Irish communities.
When one is planning on leaving their own country, the norm has been that one adopts the culture of their new country. That certainly has been the norm here in the US, where we have much more experience with immigration (legal!!) than pretty much any other country in the world. We can make a non-homogenous society work (for the most part and for the most part, far better).
Anyways – oopsies!
Attoh did not find out the reason why until she read in Metro Eireann on Friday that his name had been removed because of his refusal to shake hands with women. Sheikh told the newspaper that he had been assured his request not to shake a female presenter’s hand would be accommodated because it was based on his religious beliefs.
In civil Western society, we treat the other sex equally. That is our way and that is our culture. I expect
that when I get the chance to go to another country again, I would once again attempt to adapt to their culture (to the polite extent, that is). Come here, I expect the same courtesy from them.
And not being insulted by forcing your culture upon mine.
Mubarak Habib, a project officer from the Africa Centre, said that it did not have a problem with Sheikh’s request and claimed there was “a mistake” on the night of the ceremony which had nothing to do with Sheikh’s request. Habib said the Somali would shortly be receiving a joint award for his volunteer work.
This is the same problem as we saw here with the teacher-in-training and his dog. Once again, we see the "PC culture" police make excuses for the immigrant instead of sticking up for their own culture. A mistake – my eye. Rather, this is Islam, where it is unclean to shake hands with women. This is Islam, where women are second class citizens (if that).
Once again, I wonder why the silence from Western feminists over this is so loud! They certainly wouldn’t put up with it from a white middle-aged Protestant male (and haven’t!), would they?
A spokesman for the Irish Refugee Council, one of the sponsors of the awards, said it was a “complicated issue” and that it was unfortunate the incident had distracted attention from the ceremony. “All the organisers will be meeting to discuss the event and to plan how to deal with such problems in the future,” he said.
And the more it is obfuscated as "too hard to talk about here right now" and sweeping it under the rug, the more it will happen. And happen. And happen again.
Does anyone think that the problem, religious intolerance, will be addressed properly ("we don’t do that here, shake that hand!") or will it be done in such a way that the congratulatory shaking of hands (or similar Western rituals) will be done away with altogether?
Intolerance on one side vs appeasement on the other. Which will win out?
Put under the category of "culturalfare" (as opposed to warfare or lawfare)
