Time to pitch Sanctuary Cities overboard

by Skip

Regular readers of the ‘Grok know that one of our guiding lights is the Rule of Law.  It is, along with right to Free Speech, the right to Private Property, and the Right to Vote, among the chief standards upon which our society functions.

You may not like the Law, you may protest the Law, you may wish (or are attempting to) change the Law, but we all must OBEY the Law and be held accountable when we refuse to recognize and follow the Law.  Most adults understand this.  Unfortunately, this view is not always held by all – especially those (sorry, couldn’t resist) that have no problem with open borders and having illegal aliens in their midst.

Well, decisions DO have consequences, as Grizzly Groundswell has the story (emphasis mine):

Recently, I wrote on the murder of Jamiel Shaw Jr last month in Los Angeles by an illegal alien gang member who was never deported after being released from LA County Jail. The suspect had served 4 months on a weapons charge. Apparently, when arrested, he told the cops that he was born in LA, and his word was accepted. One day after his release, he shot and killed Jamiel Shaw, a 17-year-old star high school football player and son of a servicewoman serving in Iraq. Had normal procedures been followed, an immigration hold would have been placed on this person, and he would have been deported upon his release. But because Los Angeles is a “sanctuary city”, immigration authorities were never notified. Now, we have a dead youth senselessly murdered.

In response to this outrage, mayoral candidate Walter Moore, with the support of Jamiel Shaw Sr, is asking the LA City Council to revoke the city regulation (Rule 40) that prohibits LAPD officers from even detaining known illegal alien gang members. Yesterday, the two appeared before the City Council to state that “Enough is enough” and plead for their support.

So far, they have met with zero results. In fact, they were treated with arrogance and disinterest.

For example, City Councilmember Ed Reyes, while expressing sympathy for Mr Shaw, stated that to revoke the rule would bring “unintended consequences”. Such as, Mr Reyes? Saving innocent lives, perhaps?

What a bunch of garbage that is the leadership of the City of Los Angeles. From Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa [you know, the one who just had to admit having an affair with a local TV reporter covering City Hall?  -Skip], the leading voice of Sanctuary, to his political hack police chief, William Bratton, to the City Council, this has to be one of the worst-run cities in America-and there is a lot of competition.

I’ve blogged about this before….this time, the sweeping under the rug may not work.

I agree with you on upholding the law in this regard. As much as individual cities (or individuals generally) may disagree with Federal immigration policy, there is no legal right of refusal for such policies as they are under the clearly delineated authority of the Federal government. While I’m certain most individuals who support such ‘sanctuary’ policies believe that they are doing so for everyone’s benefit, that does not excuse the failure to abide by the law as established by the Federal government.

Great post getting this story out there! I think this is a story we can all get behind. I agree whole heartedly that it is not an “illegal alien” issue. This is an upholding the Rule of Law issue. This is a law that encourages individuals to break the law. Thus negating the rule of law and instilling the very tyranny that these immigrants are fleeing from.
Thanks for the great links back to the Grizzly Groundswell!
It was great meeting you and the invitation to join us at the Grizzly is still open!
