I’ve said it before and will probably say it again – and Obama proved it last night EASILY! THey do not use the tax code to merely bring revenues into the Federal Treasury. They use it to manupulate our behavior, plain and simple.
They also use it to PUNISH their citizens with which they deem worthy. Get that? A club!
From Betsy’s Page:
I didn’t get to see the debate, but after reading over Marc Ambinder’s live-blogging of the debate, this struck me as the most amazing exchange.
Charlie asks Obama about the capital gains tax and its inverse relationship to revenue. "Why raise it at all?" Obama: "I would look at raising the capital gains tax for the purposes of fairness."
Just think about that. Barack Obama looks at the tax code as serving the purpose of establishing fairness rather than raising revenue. That’s a very revealing statement. The Republicans better be able to use that quote in the campaign to demonstrate that Obama’s purpose is to achieve, as Ambinder notes "distributive justice."
Obama basically has said that he will, from his Leftist, Liberal (and highly socialistic) viewpoint, have no qualms about using the tax code to go after those people he dislikes.
This now goes out of the Republican vs Democrat realm. This is now into the realm of Freedom vs Tyranny realm.
This is the promise of government to take away Freedom from its citizens. It is not about just the money (althought that is the faux argument) – it is an attack on HOW that money is made.
My question is this, given that Obama is talking about hedge/money managers here earning massive multiples above the normal working wage.
I wonder if he’ll do the same to the top tier actors? After all, the run of the mill professional actor practices their craft by uttering "I’m <name> and I will be your server tonight". The highest paid actors earn $10-20 million or more for one picture.
Is Obama going to tax them at the same rate? After all, that will make it fair, too, right?
