Students For Concealed-Carry on Campus

Dirty Harry

Go ahead. Make my day!

As I ponder the most recent school campus slaughter, once again I come up with the same conclusion: The only defense against some random nut crashing into a classroom with guns blazing is to have somebody in the room packing heat and trained to shoot back. Sure, there might be initial injury and death, but the number might be kept to a minimum if potential victims turned the tables on such an attacker. After all-- what is a "gun free zone" to an attacker but an easy target?

Well, it seems that I'm not alone in my thinking that we need MORE guns in the classrooms and campuses, not less. Newsweek has the story about a new group formed whose goal is just that: The Students for Concealed Carry on Campus. This is a great idea!

The group, whose 12,000 members nationwide include college students, faculty and parents, champions legislation that would allow licensed gun owners to carry concealed weapons on campus, in the hope that an alert and well-trained citizen could stop a deranged shooter before he or she could do serious damage.

Before all you gun grabbers get your undies all in a bundle and pass off the notion of shooting back as mere fantasy, consider this from the same Newsweek story:

There was the example at the church in Colorado Springs back in December where they actually allowed members, encouraged certain members who had a concealed-handgun license to carry their guns at church. These people were not licensed security guards. They had not been through the state-mandated security guard training or any of that. These were simply people who had concealed-handgun licenses, and the church said, "You know, we'd appreciate it if you would carry your guns at church for the protection of this church." And this woman actually managed to shoot a guy as he was walking through the door armed to the teeth, like Rambo. So concealed carry has mitigated dangerous situations like this in the past.

Perhaps if would-be murderous crazies knew they faced a high possibility of being greeted with return fire, they might think twice before attempting their twisted acts in the first place, thus actually REDUCING gun violence by the addition of MORE guns... As a parent with a child in college and one in high school, that would certainly make my day!

Students for Concealed Carry on Campus are working for a good cause that will probably save lives in the future. It seems as though people would understand that no matter how strict gun laws become the "bad guys" will still have guns. A criminal would have no problem breaking the law to possess a gun in order to carry out a deathly act. Why should criminals be the only ones with guns? It makes sense to carry a weapon for protection against the people who have guns for the wrong reasons. It is also interesting to note that many people cannot bear to even think about their fellow citizens carrying guns. A professor here at BU shuddered and closed his eyes at the thought of students completing a retail observation project which included investigating the sales, operations, product line, and layout of any retail store except if it had anything to do with guns. He and many others, believe in the school of thought that guns kill people. However, it is people who kill people and fewer would die if many, like my professor, were not so insistent on indoctrinating others into thinking that our Second Amendment right is obsolete and unimportant.
Well said, Elise. It seems you are wise beyond your years. You must have had good training! :-)
Thanks for providing the link. My kids (13 & 10) are concerned about the school shootings and we have talked about planning for their personal protection at college.
There really is no other alternative. You can outlaw guns all you want, but the lunatics will still have them. Just like the answer to perceived free speech problems is more free speech, so it is with guns. After all-- you cannot alter human nature when it's the evil strain...
"You can outlaw guns all you want, but the lunatics will still have them." By the same token, you can scrap constitutional rights to privacy left and right and the lunatics will still have no problem conspiring to knock over buildings with ease if they want. My whole point earlier was that you are baldly inconsistent, clamoring on one hand that people should be able to roam the streets packing heat (and if you think this would solve more problems than it would create, you're dangerously daft) while insisting that token anti-terror measures whose only impact is on innocent U.S. citizens should be green-lighted. (By the way, don't call us "gun grabbers" unless you can find evidence we're roundly anti-private-gun-ownership at the Refuge. Hint: You can't.) Your entire problem as analysts and thus as bloggers is that you're sheer reactionaries, and this opens the door to the various ugly sorts of hypocrisy you've put on display. You brand us Chimps "liberals," but we're merely more liberal than you are (meaning we're to the left of Rush Limbaugh); what we really don't like is stupidity, and you Grokkers seem to produce 87% of New Hampshire's exports in the dum-dum sector all by yourselves. Judy rumbles from her gut and from her Bible about gay homosexers without any clue as to what the impact of equal-rights legislation actually does; you rant about how the libs are getting in Bush's way and basically being pro-jihadist without bothering to avail yourself of the fact that the changes in the law you're worried about is moot -- the feds can still do whatever they want when they smell terrorist rats; and all of you believe that disagreeing with anything Bush cranks out is evidence of anti-Americanism when it's plain to most that this administration has frigged up the country to a remarkable degree and across multiple planes. You won't believe us, but maybe your more enlightened Republican friends, who are as disgusted as we are, can help you out sometime.
