Sorry ma'am, no can do. You know, crystal meth and all that... Oh-- you want to kill your baby? Why didn't you say so? Come on in!
...
Bad. Good.
We just got a call from our 19 year old daughter-- a student at BU. Seems she's got a cold and wanted to take something for it. She did what her mother used to do as needed-- headed out to CVS to get some remedy-- in this case, Dayquil. No problem, right? WRONG!!!
One of the nice things about living in the city is that you don't need a car. Such is the case with our daughter-- we bought her a semester-long MBTA commuter pass, and she's good to go. Well, when you have no car, and possess a photo-student ID, why would you need your drivers' license? I'll tell you why...
To buy an effin' bottle of Dayquil, that's why!
Yep. She went to CVS today to get Dayquil, and without a drivers' license in hand, and despite having her BU-issued photo ID, she could not purchase Dayquil.
This is what pisses me off about the society we live in today: If she was a middle school student here in NH, say, 14 years old, she could have an abortion, and nobody, ESPECIALLY her parents, would have to be consulted or anything. Just waltz in, undoubtedly accompanied by a "teacher" or other friendly "caring" social worker type-- perhaps working for the government-- and they'll murder the baby on the spot. Buy some over the counter cold remedy to ease a few sniffles...
NO EFFIN' WAY!
Is it me, or is there something seriously wrong with our society?

That sounds awful, Doug. Can you link to an example of someone (be it a teenager or an adult) who has had her baby murdered and not been prosecuted? If someone did this under the eye of a teacher, a social worker, or a government employee, I would think someone would have felt obligated to report the crime. Those people are professionals who are bound by certain ethical standards, and I think that if someone discloses a history of perpetrating certain types of abuse or her intention to physically harm someone, counselors are permitted or required to break confidentiality and go to the police. Are you saying the cops are in on this?
If it makes you feel any better, a student ID would not be sufficient identification to allow someone to undergo an abortion. It is also not sufficient to let someone write a check, get a job, or do any number of other things. Most people carry their driver's licenses (or state-issued non-driver IDs) when they leave their homes whether they are driving or not. I agree that CVS has a stupid policy that is unlikely to solve more problems than it creates, but tell your daughter to carry her license with her and it will preclude this sort of hassle as well as a number of other potential snafus.
By the way, that letter from Ms. Watson you linked to is a complete crock, from the made-up story about the skier intended as a sly contrivance (from a functional standpoint, likening amputating a leg to aborting a fetus is like comparing removing a car's engine to slashing one of its tires) to the falsehoods about abortion being a known cause of higher rates of psychological trauma and the risks of the procedure itself. The only people who recognize "post-abortion syndrome" are prevaricating, emotion-driven pro-lifers. People who oppose abortion across the board do themselves no favors by lying for effect, but since many of them are motivated by religious ideas rather than consequentialist considerations, they're used to lying and can do it without blinking.

Both. Unquestionably.
