Let’s use the IRS to get you to buy Health Insurance – a GRAND idea!
I nearly fell off my chair when I read this:
One of the dirty little secrets of the debate over health insurance is that around 15 million younger adults choose not to carry any. Never fear, John Edwards will save these miscreants from their own folly by garnishing their wages and forcing them into his planned universal health care nightmare:
Under the Edwards plan, when Americans file their income taxes, they would be required to submit a letter from an insurance provider confirming coverage for themselves and their dependents. If someone did not submit proof of coverage, the Internal Revenue Service would notify a newly established regional or state-based health-care agency (which Edwards has dubbed a Health Care Market).
These bureaucrats would then determine just what sort of plan your family should have:
If the individual was not eligible for either of those existing public programs, the regional-health care agency would enroll the individual into the lowest cost health-care plan available in that area. The lowest-cost option could be a new Medicare-like public option or a private insurance plan. The newly covered individual would not only have access to health benefits but would also be responsible for making monthly payments with the help of a tax credit.
But what happens if you’d rather spend that monthly payment on something else? Say a couple of movies or a real cool video game?
If a person did not meet his or her monthly financial obligation for a set period of time (perhaps a year, perhaps longer) the Edwards plan would empower the federal government to garnish an individual’s wages for purposes of collecting "back premiums with interest and collection costs." The process, according to the Edwards campaign, would resemble the process used to collect money from Americans who are delinquent on federal student loans or child support payments.
Got that!!! Edwards will GARNISH…
…your paycheck! If you are that mean and so evil so as to believe that the money you earn is better spent by you, man are you in trouble! What in blazes is Edwards thinking??? Openly stating that he will use a generally hated Federal agency (and yes, somebody has to collect the taxes) to not only sweep for money but will now turn us in?
Great campaign issue – "I will use the IRS to get you!"
One of the standards that I am using in judging which candidate for Prez will get my vote is the Skip Index. One LARGE component of that is the Degree of Freedom – is this guy or gal advocating for policies that will INCREASE or DECREASE my freedom of choice in a given area. Rather simple – it is a yes or no (generally). If there are two candidates that are similar in proposals, the nod goes to that one that gives ME greater choice.
Edwards does not believe in choice:
During a press avail following the event Edwards reiterated his mandate:
"Basically every time they come into contact with either the healthcare system or the government, whether it’s payment of taxes, school, going to the library, whatever it is they will be signed up."
When asked by a reporter if an individual decided they didn’t want healthcare Edwards quickly responded, "You don’t get that choice."
As opposed to me losing that choice to the Government. And there is no longer arm of the Gov than the IRS!
McCain will give me a tax credit of $5K (last I knew) to assist me in buying my own policy. Rudy does it even better – $15K tax (which is closer to the cost of a family plan) and would allow me to keep what is not spent. Both go to the "self-interest" center where people become better consumers and drive down prices for all of us.
Has anyone else caught the dichotomy here? Here is a Democrat that thinks nothing of having the IRS go after legal citizens just for not having insurance, yet won’t agree to having it cross-match SS Numbers to detect identity fraud when illegals use SS #s of legal taxpayers?
Who’se side is he on anyways….
