The Dems dreamin’ of Jeannie no more… A looming nightmare for Republicans?

Kathy Sullivan

Are you ready to rumble?

The Dems certainly are! Get ready for some nasty politics around these parts… Former NH Democratic Chair/ attack-dog Kathy Sullivan (shown above–a Granite Grok NH Power-Player) has gotten her wish– Jeanne Shaheen is reported in today’s Union Leader to be set for a run against John E. Sununu.

This is not good news for Republicans (or America?). Jeanne Shaheen, who lost to Sununu by a small margin in 2002, will find herself in a radically different state of New Hampshire today than back then. Republican fortunes are down. Democrats are motivated and on the move. Near as I can tell, many Republican stalwarts, at least the locals in these parts, still appear atrophied and stunned from last November, basically stuck on stupid. I’m sure this isn’t unique to just here in Belknap County. Does anybody think that a Shaheen team that includes her pugnacious husband Bill, a power in his own right, and an energized and rested Kathleen Sullivan aren’t poised to take full advantage of the Republicans’ continued malaise?

The battle has been joined. The stage is set. There is much work to be done. I cannot bear the thought of a NH Congressional contingent that includes Hodes, Shea-Porter, AND Jeanne Shaheen…

Neither can I. But what, if anything, can be done to stop it? NH politics is now dominated by traitors, cowards, massholes, and assorted other D-supporters.

Perhaps if the Republicans got their heads out of their arses and put up a fight, something could be done. Unfortunately they don’t view themselves as part of the problem. Locally in Belknap County, they have had a monopoly for so long, they no longer know how to take a fight to the opposition. Instead, they view an active conservative like myself, expecting adherance to the platform, as a bigger threat to their sorry selves than they do the Dems. They do stupid things like violate the Right to Know law, arrogantly conducting business behind closed doors, all the while getting pounded by the local media. They NEVER, EVER write letters to the editor, while the Dems have the papers filled day after day espousing their beliefs and issues. “Gotta lay low, you know,” they say. “Can’t make too many waves, Doug. Otherwise, we won’t get re-elected.” I got news for them– waves or not, they are in sad shape. Perhaps they’ll realize next November. Then again, they didn’t get it last November…

I moved here from Vermont about 8 years ago. I am originally from MA and did a tour in the Army before living in Vt for a short time. I went to college here so decided to come back when a job opportunity opened up. I came out of college with a “who really cares attitude” having been raised in a Ted Kennedy supporting family. 5 years in the Army and a 10 year law enforcement career have turned things around. When I moved to NH I thought I had found the only place where some sanity remained in New England. Ever since moving here it has been slowly downhill. With the last election, the fortunes of NH conservatives seems to be on the outs. The history of New England seems to indicate a slow slide toward entrenched democartic party rule. Once it takes hold here it will never go away. I understand that may sound like a defeated attitude but it is the way I feel. My circle of friends here is more liberal than conservative. I avoid all talk of political issues when with them in order to remain friendly. If they start a political conversation I leave the room because it serves no purpose to try and convince anyone. When my children are grown and on their own I plan to leave the state for the midwest if at all possible (my lovely wife has a problem w/that but…..) Elected Republicans in this state are weak. When is the last time you heard any of them take a stand on anything? Maybe they have I just haven’t heard them.
    God Bless our military

Man, I was depressed writing the post. Eric’s take doesn’t help raise my spirits. What’ll probably happen to make matters worse is that from now till the election, Sununu will probably do what Bob Smith did– tack leftward. Thus, us conservatives will get further screwed between now and election day as the politician panders to folks that would never vote for him anyway. The folks in the middle, clueless as to the rough and tumble of politics, will perceive little difference between the candidates, and will vote for the “newbie”.
