Marchand Out
Former Governor Jeanne Shaheen’s entry into the Democratic Senate primary has caused Portsmouth Mayor Steve Marchand to bow out. That’s too bad, though it is a judicious decision, certainly.
Marchand is a bright and savvy politician who appears to be genuinely interested in doing what he believes is right for his community and state. I disagree with a great many of his policy preferences, to be sure. But I have watched him in action as Mayor of Portsmouth and have been very impressed with his dedication and commonsense approach to governing. His departure from the Democratic primary is unlikely to diminish the brightness of this rising star.
Candidates Katrina Swett and Jay Buckey plan to remain in the race, for the time being, at least.
