The Birth of Real Change

Newt Gingrich
Newt sets the wheels of change in motion.
(Manchester, NH-- May 2007)
.
Yesterday, Newt Gingrich ended speculation about a run for the presidency, and instead, began a movement that might, in the long run, have a greater, longer lasting effect on all levels of politics. By announcing that he will focus on the American Solutions project and his work at the Center for Health Transformation, Newt Gingrich pulled the rug out from under the cynics that called his effort at creating and connecting local grass-roots activism nothing more than a veiled front for a presidential campaign. If what we experienced yesterday in our local "Solutions Day" project right here in Laconia, NH is any indication of what happened in the hundreds of such events that happened simultaneously throughout the rest of the country, it is entirely possible that Newt will have set the stage for grassroots education and activism that could realize his goal of working to bring about real change to our seemingly broken system of government.
.
American Solutions workshop
American Solutions workshop in Laconia, NH
.
In Laconia, we had 39 people in attendance. While some left as the afternoon went on, having other commitments, many stayed till the end, and then some. Following Newt's closing remarks, the first question asked was,

"When are we doing this again?"

After some 5 hours of viewing roundtable discussions livecast over the Internet and engaging in followup and conversation about each topic, the group was ready for more. It was very uplifting to be among a group of folks that want to become engaged and involved in their government, wishing to play a role in bringing about the fudamental change that we so desperately need at all levels.
.
As a group, we decided to create an ongoing entity that will continue to meet, educate ourselves, and work to bring about change in our towns and cities, state, and at the national level. There is no rule or law that says only politicians have the answers. Why can't ordinary people, each with their own particular skills and ideas, come up with logical, workable solutions to what needs to be fixed?
What Newt accomplished, through the use of technology and the efforts of regular folks scattered throughout the state and country, is seemingly unprecedented. To be able to capture the imaginations and resources of large numbers of people simultaneously working together, and focus that energy against our leviathan systems of government in an organized way, is one way that we might finally begin to change some of the broken facets that have been that way for far too long.
.
As Newt says, we have a world that works-- WalMart, Fedex, and UPS, to name a few examples-- and a world that doesn't- FEMA, the INS, etc. If enough people rise up and demand change, armed with examples and solutions, change will happen. We need enough people to tell each and every one of the over 500,000 elected officials here in America:
If you're not for real change, you shouldn't come back.
Amen! And that goes for ALL politicians- Republican, or Democrat.
.
As an aside, it appears that our group will work both within the confines of American Solutions and beyond. Many people at the Laconia event were really excited at the prospect of helping each other as we look to change here at the most local level. The plan is to network and work together to back each other up as we all look to begin to change the "business as usual" mode that is locked in place in many locales by the "good 'ole boys (and gals)" that seem to control things.
Real change requires real change. It has begun...
.
American Solutions
Ordinary folks in Laconia doing what the politicians won't: solving problems.

Gold Star Mothers Day

National Gold Star Mothers Day Ceremony

Gold Star Banner
.
A note from the Blue Star Mothers of New Hampshire:
.
Please join us as we honor our New Hampshire Gold Star Mothers on Sept. 30th starting at 2:00pm at the NH Veterans Cemetery, Boscawen, NH. Seating will be limited so we are asking that you bring a lawn chair so you may enjoy the ceremony in comfort.
The men and women of America's Armed Forces selflessly serve to protect our Nation, and they are among our greatest heroes. From the trenches of World War I to the beaches of Normandy, from Korea to Vietnam, from Afghanistan to Iraq, many courageous members of our military have given their lives so that Americans could live in freedom and security. On Gold Star Mother's Day, we recognize and pray for the devoted and patriotic mothers of these men and women in uniform who have made the ultimate sacrifice in defense of our liberty.
.
America's Gold Star Mothers carry a great burden of grief, yet they show a tremendous spirit of generosity in helping their fellow citizens. With kindness and understanding, they support members of our Armed Forces and their families, provide vital services to veterans, help to educate young people about good citizenship and our Nation's founding ideals, and bring comfort to many in need. We commend these proud women for their compassion, commitment, and patriotism, and our Nation will always honor them for their sacrifice and service.
.
The Congress, by Senate Joint Resolution 115 of June 23, 1936 (49 Stat. 1895 as amended), has designated the last Sunday in September as "Gold Star Mother's Day" and has authorized and requested the President to issue a proclamation in its observance. On this day, we express our deep gratitude to our Nation's Gold Star Mothers, and we ask God's blessings on them and on their families.

SEIU - Healthcare Smoker?

I'm an SEIU funded / supported Healthcare Smoker Voter!

That's right - I want you to pay for my Universal Healthcare to help me with my increased risk of  chronic diseases that are associated with smoking: cancer, hypertension, COPD, emphysema....

Question for Ray Buckley and Gov. Lynch-- cuz inquirin' minds wanna know!

Democrat Campaign Donor
Dem campaign donor...
.
Regarding the illegal political donations to Gov. Lynch and the NH Democratic Party, I have but one question:

Have you guys returned the money yet?

Just wondering...

A union hack, apparently taking the "high road,", decries American corporations and their "unmitigated exploitation" of workers. What, did they want them to actually work?

union workers
California union members assaulting Arnold supporter in 2005
.
When it comes to pointing fingers at who's to blame for the continuing exodus of manufacturing jobs to China and other such places, I have long believed that the hardcore union types should look in the mirror for a glimpse of at least one of the many culprits. After years of mind-numbingly high salaries and benefits (for what one must admit were, in some cases, mundane tasks) far beyond what might otherwise have been deemed reasonable, you can't really blame big companies for looking elsewhere for labor when given the opportunity.
.
Consider this story about an 1854 strike action by the forerunners to my "favorite" local batch of unionized employees, the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard workers as recounted by Ray Brighton. You'll note the forward thinking warning about pushing employers over the brink:
The Portsmouth Journal noted that... the cost of the three-week strike was estimated at $15,000. The money came out of the pockets of the workers, and the newspaper moralized that such aggressive action by workers tended only to harm the workers themselves. Had the Secretary of the Navy not been forgiving and restored the original wages, the paper noted, workers who were unhappy with the wage cut could certainly move on and find work elsewhere. A major strike by workers, the newspaper warned, might cause the employer to pack up and go to a distance place where the workforce was more cooperative.
Now don't get me wrong, I think that employees can and should be valued assets to any business or organization. I believe that workers should be paid fairly and treated with dignity and respect. If an employer violates the laws, I want them appropriately dealt with. I think there is a balance that can be reached that is equitable to all in the business world-- all of which is ultimately driven by market forces. It's how things work in America. But, might it be that some manufacturers, having had enough of the heavy handed tactics of labor unions, gave up and moved to better situations?
.
Tuesday, I had the pleasure of attending the "Keep it Made in America" town hall style meeting in Manchester hosted by John Ratzenberger. While I agreed with much of the sentiment, and generally try to buy American whenever possible, I did note an element of unionism woven throughout the entire evening. Recognizing the fragile makeup of the Alliance for American Manufacturing that I much admire-- management and unions working together in common cause-- I overlooked most of the standard union anti-corporate references peppering the evening's discussion... Except for the end-of the event tirade we heard from panelist, Gail Kinney.
.
According to the event press kit, Ms. Kinney is a "Consultant to workers and labor organizations on high-road economic strategies" from Canaan, NH. She went on a rant that made me, as an employer and former corporate employee, uncomfortable, to say the least. Her blanket claims of employee abuse bordered on ridiculous-- something that on balance with the rest of the evening, we all could have done without. Check it out:

Moral/Immoral: Who Decides?

I admire Gen. Pace for refusing to apologize for his own personal opinions, and here, regarding what he considers immoral behavior.

The top dems try to please all of the people all of the time and apparently have no morals, adultery's okay, civil unions are okay, etc., etc. and basically think just about everything and anything is okay.

When people have no moral boundaries, we have some of the situations like we have now in America. An everything and anything's okay lifestyle will lead to destruction for sure. Even the Bible states that while everything's permissible, not everything is beneficial.

I'd rather have a Gen. Pace type as President than any liberal, left-wing, anything's okay democrat. The truth is that Gen. Pace is entitled to his opinion and just because someone disagrees with homosexuality because of religious or any other reason, they shouldn't be condemned for it or apologize. At least Gen. Pace knows what he believes and is willing to stick by his beliefs. The wishy, washy liberals are swayed to and fro by the wind of whatever's currently popular; e.g., Al Gore and his alarmist global warming scare tactics that are very one-sided and don't take into account naturally occuring climatic changes. It's the False Evidence Appearing Real (FEAR) tactics being used to attempt to silence truth under a banner of the political correctness man who thinks he's some kind of god.

I wish more Americans were convicted and steadfast in their beliefs and had higher morals rather than ever-changing "values."

It continues - debate request issued on healthcare with the "I'm a Healthcare Voter" folks

Update and bumped (third time)

SEIU

NH for Healthcare - the I am a Healthcare Voter folks

We're non-partisan!
 What a crock!

Non-Partisan?  HAH!  They say that they wish to promote a dialog and debate about healthcare locally.  Not in my opinion! These folks are going around to all the political events merely to harvest names, addresses, and emails.  They are not being upfront with folks - after talking with a number of them, one learns that they have been well trained to NOT speak of Universal Healthcare.

One of life's rules for success in life is being persistent - I'm not letting go of this issue, as I believe that this is one of the signature issues of the campaign. And I hate being lied to or spun.  So guess what my emotions were when I ran across this story.

A politically potent union has decided not to take sides in the Democratic presidential battle, at least for now, even though many of its leaders support John Edwards’s presidential bid.
The board of the union, the Service Employees International Union, met in Chicago on Monday, and decided not to endorse Mr. Edwards or any of the other Democrats.
One board member said that a majority of board members favored Mr. Edwards, who has been outspoken on behalf of universal health coverage, one of the S.E.I.U.’s main goals. But those members, taken together, do not come from locals representing 60 percent of the union’s membership, the threshold required for the board to make an endorsement.

Deceiving people is not nice.  And I'll add the DividedWeFall folks in this too, as SEIU is behind them as well. Just talk?  Just debate?  What a smokescreen!  If that is so true, accept the debate challenge - let's see who would win in the public square!

If they were so non-partisan, how come I see no mention of Republican candidates?  Oh yeah, the Repubs, especially Rudy, want want to empower individuals and allow them to be more independant of government policies and market distortions.  On the other hand, the SEIU wants people to be taken care, to extend that Nanny State, to be more dependant on government.

I had issued a challenge followed by a supposition for the SEIU / NH For Healthcare folks.  Then in an email discussion, I offered Zandra Rice Hawkins, their Communications Director, a blog debate followed by a radio debate back on 9/18 not truly knowing the above.  While she did respond, she avoided answering about engaging in debate.  Since 9/19, all I've heard has been  cricket sounds.  I'll post the email thread later and after the jump so you can see for yourself.

I have no doubt now that I'll win the challenge - there is no defense on their side now that the cat is out of the bag.  Did others know this before me?  Probably, but I'll just add my voice.

When it is all said and done, this is NOT about healthcare.

Rather, this is how we see ourselves and government.  Is it the case that we still believe in individualism (the philosophy that made this country great) or are we deciding that government knows best for us?  Do we embrace self-responsibility or giving up that up and have others take care of us?  Do we stay with a more capitalistic form of living or a more socialistic form as in Europe (with its lower standard of living and government rationing healthcare)?

Note: I am not debasing the safety net for those that truly need it.  I am against that line of assistance continuously creeping upward to those that do not need and then becoming dependant on that when not needed.  Help those that truly need it - and that ain't all of us.

Sadly, it is also a story of advocacy groups not being up front
being honest
and truthful.

Welcome to hardball politics, Skip.

Original Post

 I am a Healthcare Voter

At almost any political rally lately, someone dressed like this woman will come towards you and say "Are you in favor of quality, affordable health insurance for every American?  Oh good - would you be willing to sign this petition?"

If I were her, why wouldn't I want someone else pay for my freedom to eat what I like, exercise as infrequently as I wish (and for some; smoke, drink, and engage in risky behaviors)?  Impending, self-imposed chronic disease - no problem!

After all, we're all in this together, right?

Advocacy brought to you by the SEIU (Psst - look at the sleeve and ask what that is: Service Employee International Union)

Subject:     Re: Health Care conversation

From:        Skip Murphy
To:           Zandra Rice

Hi!

And thanks for replying!

Thank you for the invitation to blog with you about health care issues. As one can see from this blog already, health care is an issue about which we all have strong opinions.

And that's why we have to discuss it....so are you accepting my offer to a cross-blog debate?  And then come onto the radio show (this week is booked, but I'd set aside a considerable amount of time next week)!

Our group has been talking to people across New Hampshire about their health care experiences. Everyone has a different take on it, but the overall consensus is that, right now, our health care system is broken. For months, health care activists have been urging all the presidential candidates- Democrats and Republicans – to release plans for comprehensive health care reform. If you look at the most recent debate transcript, you'll note that one challenge is to get all of the candidates to even detail their plans for health care.

It happening, and as I posted recently (http://granitegrok.com/blog/2007/09/the_differences_could_not_be_starker.html), this will be one of the three defining topics of the race (the other two being fighting Islamofascism and illegal immigration).

I encourage you and each of your readers to listen for health care conversation from candidates over the course of the next couple of weeks. I'm sure you know who is talking about health care already, but it might surprise you more to hear who is not. Since nearly 47 million Americans do not have health care coverage, presidential candidates should be talking health care early and often regardless of their position on how to improve it. To that end, right now we want the focus to be on candidates and policies. We could have our debate through the blog, but our emphasis should be on having the candidates compare and analyze one another's plans. At this time, we are going to keep our attention there. We appreciate you bringing health care to the attention of your readers, though, and are eager to see more in this regard.

The 47 million number I have already debunked (ok, just blogged - someone else has done the number crunching and I can source the result from several other sources as well).  My son is one of them.  In his early twenties, he doesn't want to pay for it even though he can afford it.  Illegals make up a huge portion.  So do others that can afford it but choose not to.

So this is not much more than a canard to pull at heart strings.  Good policy should never be built solely on emotional arguments.

In the meantime, one note on the tone of the dialogue thus far – while we have come to amicable terms,

Me too!

I'm disappointed that both the original posting and response violated the principles of GraniteGrok.

Really?  I was not aware that I broke my own rules.....

One of our organizers made a grave mistake in his comments.

We all make mistakes - no problem!  That's why I took down the email.  Action, consequence, repentance, forgiveness - works for me!

He was truly upset that an activist had been put in a negative spotlight while advocating for an issue that they passionately believe in. Not everyone is willing to pro-actively work for the issues they care about, and dialogue about the issue should not directly attack the everyday New Hampshire residents involved – which includes posting photos intended to ridicule that person, even if the face has been blocked out.

And that is where he was wrong, and I believe you are as well.  I could have gone over any time during the event, introduced myself, gotten her name, chatted with her, and then REALLY go to town and ridiculed her.  THAT is not my style.

I presented no information that could identify her personally.  I took the effort to blank out the face.  I used no name.  My prose was done to show an example of why people may be advocating for "free" universal healthcare with no responsibility on their part...why not - it's FREE!  And as we all know, TANSTAAFL - There Ain't No Such Thing As A Free Lunch.  My point was from a layman's perspective - "here, those of you who have earned more success in life, just take care of me" - and my ire over that philosophy (and trust me, I and my family have had to use the "safety net" in the past - my problem is that this net is being extended to handle what should be done by self-responsible adults).  This is not a personal vendetta standpoint.

Let's be clear - decisions have consequences.  She chose to identify with your movement.  She willingly put herself out into the public square in agreeing to advocate for healthcare.  In wearing a T-Shirt emblazoned with your message, your union name (SEIU - which, by the way, not exactly what I would consider a non-partisan group.  For example, how many liberal candidates or issues  has the SEIU backed in vs conservative ones? ), both you and she put your union out into the public domain.  Once the latter has been done, and I have done that to myself with GraniteGrok, GilfordGrok, and Meet The New Press, privacy is given up.  You get what you get.

Our organizer has made his apologies,

And accepted because I believe it was truly meant.

and we are continuing our serious conversation about appropriate response.

Er, not clear on this point on what you mean.

On your end, we'd appreciate you removing the photo, and adhering to your own rules of engagement, "Attacking people – banned. Go for the throat of the argument, not the person."

Again, while you feel I was attacking the person, I was not.  If I had wanted to, I would have provided a lot more personal information as I mentioned above.  I didn't.  Frankly, the picture serves as a good metaphor for the on-going Nanny-statism that we seem to be sliding towards - regular readers of the 'Grok know and understand this is a big issue with me - the continual infantilzation of society.

Thank you, and again, we can only compare presidential health care plans that have been released – so ask each presidential candidate to tell us what they will do to fix the health care crisis, and we'll really have something to talk about!

They already are, and with little prodding from me.  However, I see that you are trying to slide our discussion to be only that what is going on between the candidates - that would only be part of the discussion as we ALL have to take sides and solutions..  My challenge was to you folks directly - is this email an indication that it has been accepted?  I've got the sandpaper ready!!!

Let's keep the dialog up and going....in fact, this email thread could be a good start!

Kindest Regards,

-Skip

Update and bumped (again) and retitled from "Perhaps they should rethink who their volunteers should be?":

The email that precipitated the update (confusing Doug for me) has been taken down - the jist was that the "I am a Healthcare" folks are non-partisan, they were not pleased with the post, and wanted an apology (which I obviously refused to do).

Well, a couple more emails - one an apology from them.  I have thus taken down the email and have offered them a blog debate on the issue culminating in a radio / live stream debate on our radio show Meet The New Press.

Thwack - ball's in your court!  Shall we have a reasoned debate?  I await your answer...

--------------------------------

Update and bumped:  Get it straight, I wrote it; not Doug.  And no, I'm not until Andrew Sylvia meets my challenge and proves my supposition wrong. If he does, I'll eat his choice of sandpaper grit with my challenge and suppostion printed on it!  Of course (smiling here), if he can't, he'll have to do the same!

Challenge:  I bet that when the SEIU, "I am a Healthcare Voter", DividedWeFall, and AARP finally "analyze" their petition and the folks that signed it, they will conclude that the only answer will be one that will contain an even more government controlled or mandated or taxable "solution".

Supposition:  Non-partisan? My eye! SEIU is a union, a big one.  I have only seen unions have their members pay more for healthcare when negotiations have been "lost" in this area. AARP, their big ally in this field, has been known to lobby hard for not changing SS benefits, even in the face of damaging demographic change - the "it's owed to me" mentality.  It is rather doubtful that they will support free-market solutions to the current government inspired, over-worked, and distorted healthcare payment plan that masquerades as health insurance.

Note: I have talked to a number of these folks....they are well trained not to give answers as to possible solutions that may be offered.

Again - prove me wrong and I'll apologize.  But not until.

-------------------------------------------------------------

Remember, once the government has taken over, things like this story from the UK will happen.  Not if, when.  Again, healthcare has to be rationed one way or another as there will always be more of a demand for it than the supply of it can cover.

A man with a broken ankle is facing a lifetime of pain because a Health Service hospital has refused to treat him unless he gives up smoking.

John Nuttall, 57, needs surgery to set the ankle which he broke in three places two years ago because it did not mend naturally with a plaster cast.

Doctors at the Royal Cornwall Hospital in Truro have refused to operate because they say his heavy smoking would reduce the chance of healing, and there is a risk of complications which could lead to amputation.

They have told him they will treat him only if he gives up smoking. But the former builder has been unable to break his habit and is now resigned to coping with the injury as he cannot afford private treatment.

However, the hospital told Mr Nuttall, who no longer works because of smoking-related chest problems, that he would have to give up smoking before an operation could be carried out.

[snip]

"I have paid my dues as a taxpayer-and now the NHS won't treat me."

Mr Nuttall, who is single, uses a walking stick to get around and fears his bones will now be so 'calcified' that an operation would not work even if he were allowed to have it.

"It is very painful," he said. "If I walk more than a few steps I can feel it grinding."

A spokesman for the hospital trust said: "Smoking has a very big influence on the outcome of this type of surgery, and the healing process would be hindered significantly."

Once can decide to ration it via governmental policies, like those of Britain as we see here, or we can move to a more free capitalistic system that will better regulate supply and demand.

John Edwards wants to force you to go to a doctor.  The plan laid out by Hillary when she was First Lady would have told you where you could go and who you could see (and told doctors what they could study, what type of medical practice to have, and where).

Do you want either of these folks determining healthcare for you and your family?  I'd rather go with Rudy's plan - "I" get to decide!

Is Anything Off Limits?

I doubt that it's just Catholics who are outraged by this story!

Those of you who still think the civil union/gay marriage agenda is not a slippery slope issue may need to re-think what's going on in our culture!

Is America better today or was it better before when public schools still taught Godly principals and the Ten Commandments were the foundation of school and life?

I didn't go to school worrying about being shot that's for sure.

Worse yet is this piece and the completely inappropriate teaching to attempt to indoctrinate vulnerable second graders. Come on, people, when are you going to wake up and take back even your own children and what they're being exposed to in public school?

A conversation with John Ratzenberger

John Ratzenberger
.
Following Tuesday's "Keep it Made in America" town hall style meeting here in NH, I had an opportunity to spend a few minutes with John Ratzenberger. We discussed the value of children doing things with their hands, playing outside away from the computers and videos, getting up early, and nurturing a "work ethic." We also talked about China's ongoing threat to American manufacturing and the importance of American manufacturers keeping their supply chains of goods coming from US sources.
.
Mr. Ratzenberger is a genuine guy that promotes a set of classic American values harkening back to years gone by. It is nice to see a Hollywood performer offering a viewpoint in this vein, as opposed to the typical dreck offered up by the usual cast of characters...

Dem Debate tonite

After the war against Islamofascists (the 'Grok's number one issue) comes illegal immigration (easily our number two issue).  If you are a regular reader of the 'Grok, you know this already.

Question asked:

Would you support Sanctuary Cities breaking the Federal Law: yes or no?

Their answer:

All of them tried to spin (big surprise).  Effectively, except for Biden, they all answered yes, that they would support that notion.  Gravel went the furthest by saying he would open to border to ANYone that wanted to come here.

Quick observation:

The President swears to uphold the Constitution and all laws.  Here is a group of people that have just declared, going in, that they will assist other elected officials to break the law.

Think about this.  I am against illegal immigration; you may be for it.  That is not the issue.

What has happened to our society that those who wish to lead us are willing to sanctify the emotional appeal, giving in to "feel good" emotions, over one of the basic premises of this country - the Rule of Law.  Children make major decisions based on emotions - adults think.

Don't like the law?  Change it.  But to willfully ignore and disobey it being the Law Enforcement in Chief? After swearing to uphold the nation's laws?

Only one adult in the bunch.

They are going on to same-sex marriage, rights, and teaching about it in elementary school. My only thought is what I've said before and I will say it again - this Presidential election will be a stark contrast in values.  Left vs Right.

Kyoto results - just hot air?

The Kyoto Protocol (brought up by Clinton, signed by Gore, and voted down by the Senate by a 95-0  vote) was supposed to be a first step in reducing greenhouse gases.  Have those countries that signed Kyoto actually  lived up to their  obligations?  NRO has a story on this topic.

Promise:     5% below 1990 levels.
Result:      27% increase.

Question:  would it have succeeded (if we only had tried harder!!)?
Answer:      A reduction of
0.14°F over 50 years.

Cost:         Trillions spent for not much benefit.
Opinion:     Feel good hot air about hot air.

I liked this:

In climate change, apparently nothing succeeds like failure.

And now they want to try this again?  Hah!

Underdog? Maybe not for long

WMUR

Living here in NH, we basically have one over-the-air station that can be seen all over the state (hee-hee; without cable, I couldn't see it at all!).  Anywho, look what's being reported at WMUR as far as the Repub Prez race is concerned:

The Republican race for president has tightened up with three candidates now toward the top in New Hampshire, according to a new poll.

The latest WMUR/CNN New Hampshire Primary Poll shows that among likely Republican voters, Mitt Romney has dropped to 23 percent support, down from 33 percent in July. Rudy Giuliani is right behind at 22 percent, up from 18 percent.

Sen. John McCain was third at 17 percent, surging up from 12 percent in July. That represents a rebound for the early leader in the race, and with a margin of error of 5.4 percent, McCain has pulled back to striking distance.

The poll was conducted by the University of New Hampshire Survey Center, which interviewed 324 likely Republican primary voters.

I like things more simple - how's this table instead of all that verbiage:

Candidate    Now    Was    Change

Mitt              23      33        -10
Rudy             22      18         +4
McCain          17     12         +5

The surprising news is McCain's uptick.

Now, before you all want us to fall on our swords keyboards for being biased, remember - we've not declared for anyone.  We admit that we have spent a lot of time at the 'Grok covering Rudy and McCain than others.  The reason is simple - they have come here locally the most  and not during working hours.  And (to be frank), McCain asked us on his bus too!

That said, we have some kind of problem with everyone in the race.  But I was very surprised that McCain seems to be coming back from the dead - at least as far as polling results is concerned.  He turned off a LOT of folks during the immigration bill and the polls showed that in the shellacking he took.  That said, his No Surrender Tour and his new emphasis on defeating the Islamofascists (The 'Grok's Number One Issue) appears to be resonating with NH voters.  As I have said before, he OWNS this topic and this issue.  He finally has returned to his roots and it seems to be paying off for him.

So - what's with Mitt?

Mitt Romney
former MA Governor Mitt Romney
'Grok File Photo

I know that there is quite a bit of time left in the primary race here in NH (umm, maybe not if other states keep jockeying for position if this was the Kentucky Derby), but a 10% drop ain't good news.  This is especially true if one believes that Mitt is a "home boy" as he was the Governor next door in MA (ok, maybe it doesn't help) and has a home in Wolfeboro, NH.

I have no clue why so big of a drop...and Rudy and McCain have benefited from it.

Another tidbit from the reporting:

...66 percent are still trying to decide. Romney leads among conservatives and independents, Giuliani leads among moderates and McCain is pulling evenly from all three.

We pay a lot of attention to the race here in NH - a lot of us (including us Groksters) just don't declare all that early (heh - curmudgeonly Yankees!) to strangers.

Is it possible to heal homosexuality?

In Iran homosexuals are put to death...here's the latest from Fox News...I'm sure we can all agree, no matter what side of the issue we're on, that we all condemn the death penalty just because someone is a practicing homosexual.

If you've read any of my posts from the past, you know that I am opposed to civil unions and gay marriage for a multitude of reasons. But there's a significant difference between being opposed to  CUs for homosexuals and believing someone should be put to death.

This leads to exploring a new study about whether or not homosexuals can be healed and become heterosexuals.

Here’s the recent research on the possibility of changing sexual orientation.

Okay, yeah, I already know that the chimps won’t like it, and more than likely I’ll be called more bad and creative names. That’s okay.

However, since my husband and I spent many years in ministry counseling homosexuals, I can personally attest to the fact that they can be “healed” of homosexuality. As in any other complex issue people deal with; e.g., sexual abuse, alcoholism, pedophilia, etc., because God created us with free will, a person must first be willing to change.

We are a three-part being: spirit, soul (where our will, intellect and emotions live) and body. If the spiritual part of a person isn’t included in the healing, there will be no success in the healing of homosexuals. That’s why some do not become healed because they go to a secular psychiatrist or psychologist who has no knowledge about the spiritual being and therefore, really have no clue how to heal…they only know how to intellectualize, study books and follow various methods by other intellectuals, and only succeed in perhaps helping people cope better…but that’s it.

It always breaks my heart, when I hear a homosexual say: Well, I tried to become a heterosexual but it didn’t work. I always wonder who they went to for help. It wasn’t God because He promises that if you will seek Him, you will find Him. A Godly man who has been gifted by God in this particular area of counselling, can facilitate the way to healing, and God can and does heal. Willingness to change greatly affects success.

So, while some do not care to be healed from homosexuality and that’s certainly their right, that does not mean that healing is not available.

Statistically, most Psychiatrists do not believe in God. The majority in the scientific community don’t believe in God. How on earth would they understand how healing by God takes place if they don’t even believe in Him themselves?

The American Psychological Association is made up of mostly people who do not believe in God, so most don’t understand the things of God either. And, yes, I agree that the debate about homosexuality has too often been driven by political rather than scientific considerations.

And it's been greatly skewed by men/women who are scientists and puffed up in their own knowledge. Godly knowledge is something completely different.

I hardily agree with Mr. Chambers, an ex-homosexual, that “this body of research is critical in advancing the national dialogue on this issue.”

Mr. Besen’s comment “you can pray away the gay” is childish and only supports that he has absolutely no personal understanding of God and how God heals. Most healings by God take some effort by the individual and a free-will choice to pursue healing…few healings are miraculous happening instantaneously.

Scientists who are pro-homosexuality or homosexuals themselves, of course, are heard more often and certainly have their own biases.

Many of the homosexual and sexual abuse survivors we counseled required years of counseling before God healed their total being and they moved on in a healthier way with their life.

Being completely honest here, many Psychiatrists and Psychologists aren’t all that interested in getting someone so much better that they no longer require their services. Let's face it, they’re in a business to make money. God’s in the business of healing willing people and then setting them free. Counselors who answer to God generally freely give, because they have been given to freely.

Part of the healing process is how closely God will draw you to Him and relate and love you unconditionally…if you’re willing. He is not in the business of shaming anyone although internal shame issues many times are illuminated...but not to hurt although it may, but to set a person free. If you’ve never experienced it, it's unexplainable to a finite mind. But, if you have gone through a healing process with God, no one will be able to convince you that God doesn’t heal.

I’m very interested in reading the book when it comes out in October. Partly since they quoted C. S. Lewis, who said that science produced by Christian persons would have to be perfectly honest. I agree that honesty is tantamount. I’m really curious to read about their approach and how they counseled these homosexuals to see if it correlates with my own experience.

Hopefully, there will be a national dialogue as the issue needs to have light shed on it rather than keeping it in the darkness which only hinders finding the truth.

I have a question for the Left: how do these increase Freedom?

During the brouhaha over the "domestic wiretaps" and "secret spying", I often heard:

Those who would give up Essential Liberty to purchase a little Temporary Safety,
deserve neither Liberty nor Safety".   -Benjamin Franklin

Those on the Left wailed that the Bush Administration was the harbinger of fascism, that the Constitution was being rent asunder by an intrusive government.  Yet, the target audience for these wiretaps were terrorists on foreign soil. So, where's the hue and cry as another President (thankfully, still a wannabe) is issuing utterances that would go FAR beyond what the wiretaps do and affect all US citizens.  And the effect is not just materially, not just financial, but in that most intangible (yet most important) right of all - freedom.

Pray tell, how would these statements, if enacted, increase my sense of freedom, for I only see decreases?

  • "We are going to take things away from you on behalf of the common good."
  • "We can't just let business as usual go on, and that means something has to be taken away from some people."
  • "We have to build a political consensus and that requires people to give up a little bit of their own turf in order to create this common ground."
  • "I certainly think the free market has failed."
  • "I think it's time to send a clear message to what has become the most profitable sector in the entire economy, that they are being watched."
  • "What I want to do is take those profits and apply them to alternative energy."
  • "It's time for a new beginning, for an end to government of the few, by the few, for the few, and to replace it with shared responsibility for shared prosperity.

The candidate is effectively espousing socialistic, nay, communistic principles here that would make Marx and Lenin proud.   That candidate is Hillary Clinton.  She is espousing the right of government to TAKE from citizens as if it is the government's absolute right to do so.  She will abrogate one of our country's most basic rights - the right of private property.  She is all about dismantling our capitalistic system in the vein of "we know better than you; government is better than the private sector".

Worst of all...

...is the shift from a government of and for individuals to one where my prosperity is solely a function of other people.

Hillary Clinton

Freedom vs socialism.

Your pick.

An open letter to NH Republicans

To: NH Republicans
From: Skip
Subject: Gas tax proposed by a Republican

Yes, I know that Doug has already blogged about the DOT here and here, taking Governor Lynch to task for the problem.

I had a long email string with a member of the GOP leadership team last week about empowering the local Chairs and Republican messages as we try to restart things locally.  But my gosh, how can I, with a straight face, tell people that we are for less taxes with this?

This does not "empower" us!

Enter Rep. Fred King (R-Colebrook), who has filed a bill to raise the tax by 6 cents a gallon. The increase would raise an estimated $50 million for maintenance of the other 4,800 miles of roads not dotted with toll booths.

O'Leary said that unless the Highway Fund sees an infusion of new revenue, his department will have to cut one in four jobs starting in 2009.

Gov. John Lynch, who said the need is urgent on the turnpikes, doesn't want to talk about gas taxes. So Democrats who control the Legislature won't cross Lynch by bringing in a bill.

King said he checked with Bouchard first and found no one would touch the issue.

"Nobody had the guts to do it, so I'm doing it," King said.

He said he wants the extra money to go toward maintenance and repairs, not new projects.
Shades of Minnesota, where PowerLine and Captain's Quarters easily showed that their state chose to spend their transportation monies on lots of stuff - just not the right stuff (like bridge that fell down).  The word is "squander", or mismanagement, isn't it?  Yet, the MN Dems promptly cried out for more taxes (and not demanding the tough thing and logically assess where priorities had gone awry and fix it).   Is money, more and more of it, always the answer?

This cry for more taxes by a Republican just makes my job HARDER in attracting people to the Party - the Party that espouses lower taxes.  And we JUST had the NH media show that lots of other departments and programs raiding money away from that Highway fund!!!  Who has the guts to stand up and say - leave that money alone and let's manage the budget correctly?  If the money isn't there, then cut back to the basics?  Do we have someone with the guts to say and push that?   Where is the Leadership on this (go here if you want to sign a petition protesting the tax) and willing to not just protest the tax but offer the tough solutions?

What's the official Republican line on solutions?

Wouldn't it send a great message to  families all over the state that the Republicans are trying to treat the State budget like they have to treat their family budget?  Instead of excerbating a 17% Democratic increase, just "suck it up" (intestinal fortitude, not the money in our wallets) and cut back to bare minimums?  Sound looney? Sound wacky? Sound unrealistic? Sound politically undoable?  Ask families what happens when they overspend - consequences have actions.

Arrgghh!

Look...

...I know that leadership have decided not to "reign in" / admonish / toss overboard / hold accountable those Republicans that act like Democrats and not adhere to the platform.  But you know, if you did, it might make it easier for us at the local level if you did....because then we could prove that Republicans actually stand for something and are willing to enforce it.

I may be sounding like a loon, a loose cannon, or a naysayer (so be it), but the guys at the top have got to start helping us at the bottom.  I am in a very cynical area - the present messages are just being sniffed at.....and as I told my contact, my Dem counterpart in Laconia was literally laughing at me as he said "You have a tough row to hoe".

That is not a good sign.....

Think about trying this mesage at the State level. If it is working there, why not all over?  What a message that would send!

Liveblogging from the Palace Theater in Manchester: "Keep it Made in America" Town Hall Meeting.

John Ratzenberger....Keep It Made in America....Granite Grok
.
The GraniteGrok crew is here at the Palace Theater in Manchester, New Hampshire tonight where television and film star John Ratzenberger and the Alliance for American Manufacturing (AAM) are hosting the ‘Keep it Made in America’ Town Hall Meeting.  This is the first in a series of events, which will travel to seven cities in twelve weeks to highlight the growing demand among voters that the presidential candidates address the challenges facing American workers and manufacturers.
.
What I find intriguing about the AAM is that it is made up of both manufacturers AND labor union elements-- working in concert with each other in common purpose as opposed to the more traditional stances in opposition to each other. Judging by the tee shirts, there is a good number of union related people here this evening. I've also spotted prez candidate Vern Wuensche in the crowd, along with some McCain people. Mayor Giunta is welcoming the crowd and making introductions. Scott Paul, the executive director of the AAM is now speaking. BAA Systems. Steelworkers of Manchester are represented. Bringing together Dems, Repubs, union, management, etc. in common cause for US manufacturing. Sen. Ted Gatsas & Sen.Betsy Devries are here also. Gatsas is recalling the history of the mills here in NH. "Made in USA" is still an important slogan. There is much excitement and enthusiasm here in the room.
.
Sen Devries is encouraging the crowd to make sure they ask the candidates as they come here to NH about American manufacturing. This is very definitely a bipartisan event. We are now watching a video hosted by Ratzenberger that is filmed in Bridgeport, CT, where he grew up. The film notes that when he was young, Americans belonged to "two families- the one they went to in the morning- work, and the onew they went back to at night." The video isn't the standard whine, but celebrates the meaninhg of "Made in America". (We will have the video available here at the 'Grok for you to watch.)
.
Ratzenberger has not hit the stage.
I love this country.
Europe wouldn't exist if it wasn't for the strength of America.
.
I would rather my grandchild's crib made here rather than in China...
When a factory shuts down, it's not just the factory, it's the whole town.
You'll never see the name of a Chinese factory on your kid's little league uniform.
He's talking about the environment in China. They don't have scrubbers, they dump toxic effluent into the rivers. Why don't the environmentalists protest this? Our plants have been cleaned. Ask the candidates.
.
Skills aren't passed down from one generation to the next, anymore. Ratzenberger notes how self sufficient many of the workers, who worked with their hands, used to be. He's also talking about how the kids today can't measure things. And don't go outside to play, etc. Back when we had the big factories, everybody knew each other. "Sense of community."
.
John is now talkning my language-- the fate of Western Civilization depends on one-ten thousandth of an inch-- machine shops, CNC. He fondly notes the venerable Bridgeport Milling Machines that built the modern world. We're losing the ability to make such machines, and operate them.
We're all family. We're all Americans. We should protect what we have. We're just feeding the dragon. One day it's going to turn its head around and take a big bite out of us.
BIG APPLAUSE
.
Mr. Ratzenberger is discussing how people that work in manufacturing are thinkers, innovators, and problem solvers. As someone who makes things as a business, I couldn't agree more.
.
Now we are watching another video that touts our innovation and cutting edge industry. It's now showing some stats about jobs lost in recent years and refers to our trading partners like China cheat on trade agreements. ENFORCEMENT. Sounds like a familiar refrain, similar to the immigration woes. Why have agreements if we don't abide. The movie also mentioned the national security concerns that we all know follows on with the manufacturing health-- recall the "arsenal of democracy."
.
End movie-- Three questions to ask the candidates:
.

1. As President, how will you save American manufacturing jobs?

2. What specific policies will you support to strengthen the American manufacturing base, which is vital to our national security?

3. What will you do to enforce EXISTING trade laws?

There is now a panel discussion with four people-

Bob Danderson-- Mayor of Berlin NH. He's relaying the current story of how the paper mills are being dismantled. He tells a sad story that, I can attest is true. He believes "free trade" is what killed his city. We need "fair trade." He is getting big applause. "Both political parties have failed us."

Ratzenberger pipes in and says the schools are failing us too, with regards to training our kids properly in basic skills.

Mayor Danderson is quite passionate and sincere about the woes faced by his city in the Northern part of the Hranite State.

We are now listening to Gail (didn't get last name) who works to retrain workers after the jobs go away. She remarked that the big corporate pursuit of more profit. Now talking about Fisher Price Mattel product woes caused by bad trade policies. We can make toys in Berlin better than in China. BIG APPLAUSE...

Mark McKinley

Tom O'Reilley that owns a textile company (tee shirts?) in the Manchester Millyard. He's talking about how great his employees are. He's now talking about how hard it is to stay competitive given that the health insurance he provides his employees goes up despite despite there being no big illnesses or other reasons.

"All we ask for is a level playing field."

Question Rich Reilly- Machinist & weldor. "Candidates need to pay attention to manufacturing." Talking about spending last several months helping to write resumes helping struggling people-- many in their fifties and sixties. "What do we do now?" What can they do to help us struggling Americans?

Ratzenberger- Litmus test for candidates. They don't understand people who get up every day and go to work. Can't use tools.

Roland Sampson. Environment. In this country companies have to adhere to laws to protect land and water. Do they have these in China? Answer- no. Workers have sores from the bad environment.

Why don't you hold Chinese to the same standard?

Woman- (no name) Amwerican manufacturers have to comply with struict rules & regs. How can we ensure safety with products coming from China.

You can't.

Ron Burke- management consultant. Every time we solve a problem "over there", we fix it & then they take our jobs. "Outsource our politicians to China." BIIIG APPPLAUSE!!!!! Also noted the problem is caused by us  when we buy products made in China.

Talk about Portsmouth Naval Shipyard.

Man- important point not to forget- Companies hiring illegal aliens doesn't help.

Ratzenberger notes that prior to '72, you needed a sponsor for immigrants.

Man notes that the illegals are in MANY of the trades.

Now Gail made an anti-corporate behavior remark-- Who's holding them reponsible when they violate worker rules.

The mood seemed to swing to a pro-union feel as we've moved along. The official program has ended. I'm headed down to talk with John now.

How do we compete with this?

This video, shot in a factory somewhere in China, shows a multiple- ton press making what appears to be metal pan-inserts one might find in a buffet-chafing dish. What you are watching is workers sitting in the press itself, in between the form punches & dies, moving the parts by hand in progression from start to finish. The press appears to be the type with the big counterweight wheel as opposed to hydraulic.
.
.
Anyone even remotely familiar with industrial settings here in America knows that what you see-- people sitting within a machine such as a press-- isn't in the least bit safe, nor legal. And, rightfully so. A press with the counterweight wheel cannot be quickly stopped, nor can it be retracted in the event of an emergency, like if the worker's hand got caught in the pan. Hydraulic machines, the chosen method here, can be easily reversed and withdrawn. Additionally, most shops found here and in other free countries use very expensive automated progression type die machines that eliminate the need for people to move stuff through dangerous portions of the works.
.
If the Youtube above had been shot at a factory here in the United States, you can be sure that the owner's face would quickly appear on wanted posters in Post Offices all around the country. Geraldo would report in front of the offending place, tears flowing, on the cruel treatment of such hapless examples of downtrodden humanity. Public outrage would be the order of the day-- again, rightfully so. In today's world, there is no reason for people to have to work in such conditions. Safety for workers is the top order of the day throughout today's business world, excepting places like China, of course.
.
It would be a safe bet that the Chinese factory shown would no more comply with America's environmental laws than it does the employment safety rules. This is the number one issue that I have with competing with China in the arena of manufactured products. Not that I want the safety or environmental rules to go away, mind you. No, I just want the playing field to be fair.
.
This will undoubtedly be one of the many topics that will get discussed this evening at the "Keep it Made in America" town hall style meeting tonight at the Palace Theater in Manchester (6:30PM) hosted by John Ratzenberger. If you cannot attend the free event, check back here at the 'Grok as we'll be liveblogging from the scene. Watching the "arsenal of Democracy" playing such a critical role in the path towards winning the war in the Ken Burns WW2 film this week and thinking about the state of things today really makes one wonder what would happen if we needed to do it again-- would it be possible before it was too late?

American Cancer Society now in the tank for the Democrats

Sign 'em up - another advocacy group for the Democratic Presidential Candidates supporting socialized medicine.  From the 'Grok's friend John over at RightWingNews:

What's More Important To The American Cancer Society: Fighting Cancer
Or
Pushing The Democratic Party's Agenda?

It's really disgusting to see a once great charity perverted and used to further liberal ideological goals, even at the risk of hurting its reputation and alienating half of the US population.

If you've given money to the American Cancer Society before, I would urge you not to do so again unless it starts using its advertising budget to fight cancer instead of using it to fight for HillaryCare. Also, if you have given money to them before, I would also urge you to write or call the American Cancer Society and tell them that you can't support them again as long as they're promoting a partisan political agenda.

Effectively, they are going against the grain of studies showing that our current system is much better in successfully treating cancers of all types.  I have given money (not much, admittedly) in the past - that now stops.

Fighting cancer? Fine and dandy; do what you do well.

Using donations to advocate for a Democratic wrong headed idea of socialist Universal Healthcare that will turn a voluntary action into coerced taxes?

No.

Watching out for taxpayers on the 'Net

He's got our back on this one.  The current moratorium on taxes levied on Internet access is once again up for renewal by November 1 of this year.  Once again, Senator Sununu is out front to deny politicians yet another revenue stream and make the temporary moratorium permanent (The Permanent Internet Tax Freedom Act)

“State and local politicians should not be allowed to use the popularity of the Internet as an opportunity to broaden their tax base. Simply put, taxing consumers for accessing the Web discourages Internet use, reduces investment, stifles innovation, and limits the services available to consumers,” Sununu said. “I am also developing legislation to expand the Internet tax ban in order to prevent discrepancies and harmful practices by certain taxation jurisdictions.”

To me, this is quite important.  Being a telecommuter, I live and die by my access to the Internet.  It might be one thing to be taxes as a percentage of the monthly charge, but heaven help me as an employee OR as a blogger if I have to pay on a data rate ($x/byte).  Not only would I have to pay it here at home, but I'd have to pay it AGAIN at our hosting site.  Depending on the rate considered "fair" by politicians, I would have to rethink how things operate here at the 'Grok.  We do a lot of images, MP3s, and video - a rich multimedia site like ours effectively run as a no-profit -at-all ("profit? what profit" wonders TMEW) - would probably change in a hurry to stay open (thanks politicians that can't say no to much of anyone or thing).

Senator John E. Sununu
'Grok file footage - Senator Sununu's office

The Internet is "critically important to interstate and global commerce," Sununu said. "It makes no sense to have a national and global communications and business network to be subject to taxes by every state, city and county in the country."

That's right.  I'm just an anecdote but...

...multiply that by millions who access the 'Net everyday, and one can see how important taxpayer friendly policy will be; consumers may well have to re-prioritize their spending to decide what gets cut down as taxes, once again, go up.

While businesses can generally pass that on to their consumers, this may not be so easy a thing to do.  Given that IT (Information Technology) has been such a large reason for our booming economy (due to IT's "force multiplier" effect) and that state of the art IT requires the Internet and lots of it, this might wreak havoc on budgets and the ability to offer new and innovative services and products.

Folks, we are talking LARGE sums of taxes, and given that we JUST got the "temporary" tax repealed for the Spanish-American war, let's thank and support Sununu (and others, like Senators McCain (D-Ariz) and Wyden (D-Ore)) in this endeavor.

Here in NH, broadband access in the northern part of the state is seen as a big deal - there is little spread around this sparsely populated part of the Great North Woods.  State level politicians are arguing about getting it put in.  One of the large promises by Fair Point in its attempt to purchase the landline business of Verizon hinges on the ability to build out DSL to almost all possible subscribers of our rural state (and the less economically gifted [formerly known as "poor"] among us).

Taxes would not be helpful going forward to these folks.

PART II** NHDOT --"Cut one in four jobs starting in 2009" Could that be the answer?

NH DOT..pumping gas
.
Following on the theme reported in my prior post, Tom Fahey, writing in yesterday's New Hampshire Sunday News'  State House Dome column reports
Asked about a gas tax hike to help repair the rest of the highway system, [Transportation Commissioner] O'Leary whose term ends Nov. 30 said any increase would have to come from the Legislature.
.

So Democrats who control the Legislature won't cross Lynch by bringing in a bill.
.
King said he checked with Bouchard first and found no one would touch the issue. "Nobody had the guts to do it, so I'm doing it," King said.
.
He said he wants the extra money to go toward maintenance and repairs, not new projects. "If we're going to have highways, we've got to have some money to spend on them," he said.
.
Asked if he thought Lynch would sign a gas tax bill, he said, "I think the governor made this an issue when he ran against Jim Coburn and now he's stuck with it.
"That's his problem, not mine," King continued. "I didn't take a tax pledge."
Won't somebody please primary this RINO out of office? Are the Republicans really about to be the ones seen as introducing a gas tax increase here in NH? Can they be so stupid? Don't they have eyes to see the types of waste as described above? Is the only option we have to raise taxes on the hapless ordinary people struggling to pay all the other obligations in their lives?
.
I beg the Republican Executive Councilors to vote NO on the toll increases, along with their Democratic counterparts. How about it, Wiz? And Burton-- why don't you do something good for a change. Tell O'Leary to make the cuts and deal with them. Look at my scenario outlined in this previous posting detailing just one local NH DOT project  and consider more privatization. You can't convince me that a high degree of belt-tightening cannot be yet undertaken.

If the Republicans in the House follow Fred King in raising gasoline taxes, it will be more proof that they are in the minority because they so richly deserve to be there!

PART I ** NHDOT --"Cut one in four jobs starting in 2009" Could that be the answer?

NH DOT workers
One in four?   (9/21/07)
.
[NOTE: This is a repost of a piece, originally up Friday, titled, Change is good... Especially if there's any left in our pockets after NH's "leaders" are done with us. That way, we can pay the tolls! This story is one we believe everybody MUST know about. See PART II here.]
.
In the August 31 Laconia Daily Sun (unavailable online) story about the ongoing money woes of the NH DOT, it was reported that
The state needs to examine how it is spending its existing highway construction money before talking about raising more revenue, Gov. John Lynch says.
.
"We have to be more disciplined," Lynch said Wednesday. "We can't do everything, nor should we do everything."
Additionally, he said,

"Before we consider the need for additional revenue- which I don't think is there- we need to manage the funds today, which we are not doing well."

WOW! I thought-- after some three years as Governor, I finally found something I could agree with him about! At the end of August I was finally happy with the thought that for once, when it came to the NH DOT funding "crisis", we would do the right thing. We would finally "fix" government overspending by reducing it, instead of simply taking more money from the hapless citizens of the state. Despite the fact that some prominent Republican "leaders" like my Executive Councilor Ray Burton (who has long overseen the squandering of the road dough) and others who've been saying we need to raise gas taxes and tolls claiming it's been too long since we last increased them, I thought Gov. Lynch would hang tough.
.
Guess what? I was wrong about Gov. Lynch. Apparently, he didn't mean what he said. Or, is the state already done "examining how it is spending its existing highway construction money?" We must be, right? The Governor said that would be done before "talking about raising more revenue." And we must have figured out how to "manage the funds" much better in the three weeks since the Governor made the above statements, right?
.
The Governor said we would do all those things before seeking additional revenue, and well, as you've probably heard by now, he's gone and approved a toll hike on our highways. I'm pretty sure he means to seek additional revenue by doing that... This was the headline from yesterday's Daily Sun:

Governor Supports Plan to Increase Highway Tolls.

The story reports
Transportation Commissioner Charles O'Leary on Wednesday proposed hiking tolls throughout most of New Hampshire's turnpike system to help pay for construction projects.
Keeping in mind what I quoted at the beginning of this post-- the words of Gov. John Lynch a scant three weeks back--this is what the Daily Sun reported he has to say now, about the plan to jack up the tolls here in the Granite State:
Gov. John Lynch says he supports the plan and would ask the Executive Council to approve the increases...
.
[snip]
.
"I think this is an urgent need here in New Hampshire, and as I said, to do nothing is not only unacceptable, but I believe it's irresponsible," Lynch said.
Does anybody believe for a minute that we are presently running as tight a ship as is possible at the NHDOT? Has the government exhausted ALL possibilities and saved and squeezed every last red cent prior to this moment?
.
The photo at the top of this post was taken today. This is a project on the ramp coming into Gilford off the Route 3/11 Bypass. Months back, a clump of asphalt was glommed around a stormdrain and a barrel with a barely blinking light was placed there. Every time I've gone past it with my son this summer he's asked, "When are they going to fix this, anyway, Dad?" And we'd chuckle about state workers. You know, the usual yucks you'd hear around a water cooler anywhere. Anyway, they've come back to the project this week. After talking to several people, the concensus is that they've been at this jobsite for a couple of days.
.
As I drove past, I couldn't help but noticing five people and five very nice (some expensive looking) pieces of equipment- 2 huge dump trucks, a backhoe, a rubber wheeled excavator, and a pickup truck. Five people. Five vehicles:
.
NHDOT.NHDOT
.
What was happening was a guy was in the cutout cementing a new iron drain cover in place. The asphalt had been carefully cut, and a vibrator was being used to compact the earth. All was being done in a quality way. [NOTE: This is not intended to bag on the workers at the scene. They only follow orders...]
.
NHDOT
Notice the fine cutout. My beef isn't with the quality...
.
Here's my problem: I know what a project like this entails-- I used to do similar work when I was younger working for my father's company in RI. Here's how it would go-- Two guys would tow a portable compressor and a jackhammer to the workzone. Even if the asphalt was pre-sawed, which I have no problem with, we'd jackhammer the pieces into small, manageable chunks and lift and remove them. We'd dig out the hole by hand with shovels (now I'm not saying a backhoe, if handy, shouldn't be used) and do the proper prep. Mix the morter in a tub, and cement the thing in place. Go back the next day with a small dump truck and a Bobcat. Fill and finish, prepped for paving. Done.
.
My question is this: Is a construction project, utilizing expensive equipment and multiple employees (on whose behalf we must pay $$ to the failing state pension fund) the most effective use of the highway construction funds? Could this project have been subcontracted to the private sector at a significant savings? How much did this one puny project cost the gas-tax and toll paying citizens here in NH?
.

How about it Governor Lynch? Why don't you tighten up YOUR fiscal house of which you oversee before you take more of my money? Show me you've done everything you can before asking me to shell out more. The same goes for all you Republicans out there salivating at the prospect of all the new money!

NHDOT
Is this the most cost effective way? I don't think so.
.
[A hat tip and note of thanks goes to Ken, who fired me up to write this by waving the August 31 Sun in my face in the first place. He's not pleased with Gov. Lynch, and neither am I. Ken had a nice letter in today's Monitor. Click here.]

Where is the outrage? Shouldn't this matter?

Hillary Clinton
Hillary Clinton- Dirty Money? Heh! What'd ya expect?
.
campaign cash.Al Gore campaign cash
Democrat Campaign Donor                              Collecting campaign $$ for Clinton/Gore
.
I really don't get it. I remember not very many years back when b*tching about all the money in politics was quite in vogue-- You know, when the Republicans were the champs in the fundraising department. That was then. Before new "campaign finance reform" laws "fixed" all that. Now, as long as it's Democrats, everything is fine.
.
I'm not going to re-tell the details of the most recent Democrat/Clinton Norman Hsu fundraising scandal in this post, when you can go here, here, and here for the skinny. Suffice it to say that the splatter has even landed here in the Granite State on Gov. Lynch and the NH Democratic Party, which is detailed here and here-- Two thousand bucks for Gov. Lynch and five grand for the party.
.
Over the weekend, 'Grok reader and friend Allison sent a link to this spread sheet detailing the many donations that Mr. Hsu has made to Democrats. This particular story has been in the news for some time now, but this was the first time I had seen the entire history and accounting of what took place, dollar by dollar, donor by donor. I challenge anybody to look at this and not come away wondering why more has not been made of what is quite obviously a systematic, organized scheme to work around federal campaign finance laws. Notice the list is a who's who of prominent Dems that includes many other of that party's big guns, including Ted Kennedy, Barack Obama, Patrick Kennedy, Barbara Boxer and (!!) Eliot Spitzer.
.

Other than here in the Blogosphere, can anybody find someone that's properly outraged about this? Doesn't anybody care? Would it matter only if this was a Republican scandal?

"Keep It Made In America" Town Hall Meeting with John Ratzenberger Tuesday in Manchester, NH

John Ratzenberger............Keep It Made in America
.
GraniteGrok will be liveblogging this:
.
WASHINGTON, D.C. (September 20, 2007) –On September 25th in Manchester, New Hampshire, television and film star John Ratzenberger and the Alliance for American Manufacturing (AAM) will host the ‘Keep it Made in America’ Town Hall Meeting.  The town hall is the first in a series of events, which will travel to seven cities in twelve weeks to highlight the growing demand among voters that the presidential candidates address the challenges facing American workers and manufacturers.
.
“I’m proud to partner with AAM on the ‘Keep it Made in America’ town hall meetings. I’ve travelled all across this country and I’ve seen firsthand how manufacturing drives our economy. Our manufacturers, workers and their communities are the heart and soul of America,” said Ratzenberger.  “In this presidential election, we have a chance to make the voices of American manufacturing heard in New Hampshire.  We're going to educate and inspire voters to ask the candidates the hard questions about jobs and to find out how they will 'Keep it made in America'.”
.
From humble beginnings in Bridgeport, Connecticut, John Ratzenberger gained international fame on the acclaimed television series ‘Cheers’. During more than three decades of movie making and theatre, John has enjoyed success as a screenwriter, director, producer and multi Emmy nominated actor. He is also an accomplished entrepreneur and philanthropist.  Today, John hosts his own show about manufacturing on the Travel Channel.  John Ratzenberger's Made in America, which airs Tuesday’s at 9:00 and 9:30 pm ET/PT, brings viewers the stories of the best people, places and products in the United States. He honors the men and women in the United States who work with their hands and skillfully make products that are the backbone of the American economy.
.
“John gets it.  He understands what’s happening to our community,” said Tom O’Reily, president/owner of Logo Loc, a Manchester apparel company. “Manufacturing, the largest industry in New Hampshire, is going through hard times.  Our state has lost 28,000 jobs since 2000 -   jobs that provided a good living for hard-working New Hampshire families. We want to know what the presidential candidates are going to do to stand up for us and ensure a strong manufacturing future for New Hampshire.”
.
The “Keep it Made in America” town hall meeting will be held on Tuesday, September 25th, at the Palace Theatre, 80 Hanover Street, in downtown Manchester.  Doors open at 6:00 pm, and the program begins at 6:30 pm.  Admission is free.
.
During the town hall meeting, Ratzenberger will encourage New Hampshire voters to ask the presidential candidates three key questions to determine their commitment to keeping manufacturing jobs in the country:
  • How will you save American manufacturing jobs?
  • What specific policies will you enact to strengthen the American manufacturing base, which is vital to our economic and national security?
  • What steps will you take to enforce our trade laws and hold cheating countries like China accountable?
“We need to hear from the presidential candidates what they plan to do to save our jobs.  We’re not afraid of competition, we just want everyone to have to play under the same rules,” said Mike Roache, president of USW LU 8938.  “In the last decade Manchester lost 25% of its manufacturing jobs, we can no longer afford to sit idly by while countries like China cheat.  Manufacturing is our future, and we want a president who will do something about it.”
.
“The manufacturers and workers in New Hampshire share John Ratzenberger’s and AAM’s dedication to strengthen American manufacturing, and we’re excited to work together to urge the candidates to focus on these issues,” said Scott Paul, AAM’s executive director.  “The American qualities of hard work, ingenuity and innovation have enabled us to get where we are today. But, for America to remain the leader in the global economy, we have to overcome some very real challenges that threaten the vital core of our economic engine. Our town hall events will initiate this important dialogue and empower voters to continue the discussion with the presidential candidates.”

**Republican presidential candidate Vern Wuensche will be attending this event. "Who's Vern?" you ask. He's a Texas businessman that is running for president. He joined us as a guest host this past Saturday on MTNP. He is a very interesting fellow that comes to the fray bearing many time-tested business skills. If you're a conservative, you'll appreciate his positions on the issues. I highly recommend you look him up Tuesday.**

Must See TV

WW2
.
I am watching the Ken Burns' World War 2 documentary, The War, on PBS. I highly recommend you bring the laptop in front of the TV and watch. It's only been on for 1 hour, but it is obviously another classic masterpiece, as one expects from NH's Mr. Burns... An added bonus is that there are no commercials, which, one must admit, is rather nice. As an aside, make sure that you read this sometime, for another point of view on Roosevelt's Executive Order 9066.

President Bush: "A man of true character and compassion."

President Bush with military families
President George W. Bush consoles Ronald Klopf and Lisa West-Klopf, both of Aguanga, Calif., during a gathering of military support organizations Tuesday, Sept. 18, 2007. Their son, Lance Cpl. Jeromy West, was killed November of 2006 while serving with the U.S. Marines in Iraq.
Our friend Allison Scamman from Stratham sends the following report on a trip to she and others from NH took this week in support of our troops:
Hello All,
.
We had the most amazing trip to Washington,DC with the Gold Star and Blue Star families that have come together from all over the US and joined a group called Families United-Supporting our loved ones to victory. Also the Vets for Freedom were there with us. President Bush had us all for breakfast at the White House and then opened it up for a tour. We are wearing the red shirts and the Vets are tan. The visit to Arlington National Cemetery was also very moving with few dry eyes ,even for General Pace.
.
Just click this link and you can see our visit with the President. He then let us tour the White House (beautiful). He was wonderful to all of us, no matter what you think of him- he is a man of true character and compassion.
.
Love,
Allison
When you follow the link, you will read the President's words with those with him in support of the troops. This particular line is something that struck me:
THE PRESIDENT: Thank you all. When the history books are finally written about this chapter in the war against extremists and radicals, they will recognize certain truths: one, that we recognize that if we were to retreat from the Middle East the enemy would not be content to remain where they are, but they would follow us here. We recognize that the best way to protect our homeland is to defeat an enemy overseas so we do not have to face them here on the streets of America. And we recognize that liberty is powerful, that liberty will yield the peace that we want for generations to come; that will recognize that this generation of Americans did the hard work now, so that future generations could live in security and peace.
That is the very essence of what the new world war is all about. We can argue about strategy and methods of how to conduct the war all day. We shouldn't have to argue over whether or not we must fight it, however. September 11, 2001 showed us that whether we want to participate in it or not, we are at war. And they WILL follow us anywhere...

More on Iranian President's Visit

Click here for more and don't forget to make comments on my previous posting...let your voice be heard.

September 22, 2007

Yup, the 'Grok is endorsing someone!

Ken Merrifield

Future Mayor of Franklin, NH

Ken Merrifield

I met Ken Merrifield at another radio show here in the Lakes Region.  A smart guy, a good conservative, his main message is keeping the tax cap whole in Franklin.  Why?  It protects taxpayer monies and forces the city's managers and leaders to be creative and think.  And it has worked well, giving rise to a growth in the State that is well managed and among the fastest in the state.  We wish him well and good success in the upcoming race!

Anyways, he promotes his case better than we do.  We were fortunate enough to interview him at one of the political events that we went do, and it is our pleasure to have captured that interview (on his favorite topic) here: Ken on Tax Caps

BTW, that's his truck behind his head...you know, the one with this on it:

Mitt Romney

Should Our Tax Dollars Protect Iranian President?

Click here to read the latest from Fox News regarding the President of Iran.

Unless you've been living in a cave with Osama, you know that he is coming to visit the USA. Click here for some reaction by the Jewish community. Click here to read about his request to visit ground zero.

This evil man wants to blow up Israel, supports terrorists, and does not believe in the holocaust. I think this man is extremely dangerous and, personally if I had my way, I would support having snipers take him out.

But the burning question I'm interested in getting your input on is this: Our tax dollars will be used to protect this man while he is in the USA. Do you agree or disagree that he should be afforded protection using our money? Or do you believe that we should not even allow him to visit the USA? And, of course, your comments as always are welcome.

Or would those of you who have absolutely no law enforcement experience and don't know how to protect anyone especially since you don't know the difference between the barrell or the butt of a gun want to volunteer for protection detail?

Meet The New Press Today at 11 AM -- What a Lineup!

.
Once again, this week's broadcast version of the New Media brings an array of items and guests for your consideration. As always, thanks to the technical wizardry and analytical skills of Skip, if you are beyond the broadcast area of Newstalk 1490 WEMJ, simply click here for instructions on how to connect and listen on the Internet via livestream. (Podcasts here)
.
Here's the lineup:
  • Vern Wuensche is the first presidential candidate to join us in person in studio. Huh? Who's Vern? He's from Texas and he's running for president. He's a self-made man that has made his living as a small businessman for thirty one years. I found out about him when he commented on a post I did about Truman's correct decision to drop the atomic bomb, which he wholeheartedly agreed with. I challenge any real conservative to review Mr. Wuensche's positions on the issues and find something you disagree with. His main issue is the judicial system and its impact on small businesses. There are many people other than those at the top that run for President every cycle that we often never hear about, but they're there. We'll find out what motivates someone to pursue something that is without a doubt, the longest of long shots. Says Vern: "Skill in achieving a result is a practiced art. An American leader must clearly picture the desired result and then each day exercise discipline and determination to be certain he or she is moving toward it."
  • Skip and I will discuss the new toll increase proposal that Gov. Lynch is supporting. Will gas tax increases be next? Are we getting enough bang for our bucks, or are we just getting screwed? Shouldn't privatization of services be something to consider as NH seeks to solve the DOT money "crisis"?
  • Joining us for some in-depth presidential politics talk is Brian "Cosmo" Lawson of the blogs NH Presidential Watch and NH Insider. We'll cover the Repubs and the Dems. Could anybody other than Hillary survive a Norman Hsu fundraising scandal? Is Fred starting to get his groove? Should some of these guys call it quits?
  • Rick Tyler is Newt Gingrich's press secretary and spokesman. He'll fill us in on the final stretch to next week's American Solutions events taking place right here in NH and elsewhere across America. This exciting, innovative happening, based on the vision and ideas of Newt Gingrich, seeks to bring together activists, policy experts, candidates, and elected officials to develop solutions for the challenges we face as a nation. We'll be hosting a Solutions Day workshop right here in Laconia, so we're looking forward to what Mr. Tyler has to "tease" us with as we head into the main event.

  • Kerri Houston of the Alliance for American Manufacturing will talk about another cool event happening in NH this week: the "Keep it Made in America" town hall meeting hosted by John Ratzenberger of the Travel Channel's Made in America (and of course, Cheers fame). The event will focus on New Hampshire’s continued loss of manufacturing and textile jobs.  Voters will be encouraged to ask candidates blunt questions about what they’ll do to help save U.S. manufacturing. Kerri will fill in the details. GraniteGrok plans on attending and liveblogging this event.

There you have it! It all starts at 11AM EST Saturday. Tune in if you're in Central NH at NewsTalk 1490AM WEMJ or live on the 'Net here... WOW!!!

Ethics? Is there teeth for it?

I am all for ethics reform.  As an engineer, however, I am for simple elegant solutions.  I am sometimes mystified by politicians speaking politicalese that truly believe that we are stupid by pawning off legislation as landmark.  One of my NH Representatives, Paul Hodes,  is doing just that:

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Rep. Hodes released the following statement today on the Honest Leadership, Open Government Act of 2007, which President Bush signed into law late Friday afternoon:

"The Honest Leadership, Open Government Act is a real step towards draining the swamp in Washington," Congressman Hodes said. "Everyone remembers the lobbying and pay-to-play scandals that rocked Congress in recent years. It is past time that we limited the influence of lobbyists over legislators and started rebuilding the American peoples’ trust in their leaders. We are putting the Jack Abramoffs of the world out of business."

This new law is the most sweeping lobbying and ethics reform in a generation and has been hailed by reform groups and newspapers as a "sea change" and "landmark reform" and "the most sweeping overhaul of congressional ethics rules since Watergate."

"Last year, I said that I would do everything I could to put an end the culture of corruption in Washington," Representative Hodes said. "This legislation delivers on that promise."

Hardly.

Now for what that legislation allows (always remember your Sunday School lessons and the difference between comission and omission).  Politicians can be a cagey bunch - always on the tightrope :

The editors of The Examiner urge President Bush to veto the "fake" ethics reform legislation passed by Congress. As The Examiner notes, Congress "effectively gutt[ed] the legislation of virtually all meaningful reforms." Specifically, among other things, Congress

removed a provision requiring lists of all earmarks contained in legislation to be posted in searchable format on the Internet for public examination;

watered down the provision banning earmarks that benefit relatives and staffers of senators and representatives;

gave the Senate Majority Leader the power to exempt earmarks from public disclosure; and

allowed passage of bills stuffed full of earmarks without prior public disclosure of those earmarks.

Loopholes large enough to float earmarks though as large as an aircraft carrier....or this

Conspiracy theory? The NAU - one Mexican official wants it

I'm not a conspiracy kinda guy...but I am anti-illegal immigration. I believe in the sovereignty of the US and truly believe that, even with all of the flaws that liberals love to chirp about, the US is the best nation in the world.  US citizenship is an honor and a privilege; it is not something to be easily wasted or shared.  Devaluing our citizenship, our heritage, or our sense of the good that we have done for the world (and yes, we have shed more blood and given up more of our treasure than any other in world history) is not on my A list of things to do.  I will fight that tooth and nail.

Jingoistic?  Thanks for the label!

Back to the topic.  There are many that believe that the impending transportation highway ("NAFTA Superhighway") from Mexico to Kansas City (for now) and onward to Canada is the beginning of the North American Union - transplanting the European Union to this continent.  The Amero, free flow of immigrants, free trade; some believe that the stage is being set.

With stories abounding of Mexico making it easier and easier for folks to cross our border (consular matricula, comic books outlining how to cross the border, constant whining about their citizens being ill treated, Mexico providing Mexican curriculum to American schools,et al), I'm not surprised at this:

At a Denver conference on intercontinental trade corridors, a Mexican mayor called for a swift move toward a European Union-style merger of the U.S., Canada and Mexico.

Referring to Europe, Evaristo Lenin Perez of Ciudad Acuna – a sister city of Del Rio, Texas – told the Great Plains International Conference, "It's a model we need to follow quickly."

Perez later told WND, "If only people know the benefits of opening the borders and working together, improving the quality of life for all, then no one would be opposed to the idea of a North American Union."

I agree with lowering the barriers to trade - it does improve the quality of life over the long haul.  But this is not just about trade.  Of COURSE this mayor would be in favor of it - Mexicans would have an improved quality of life if Amerandico existed - but would ours?  Would that of Canadians improve?  Whose laws and jurisdictions would prevail?  And what about international treaties?

The European Union, if carefully examined, seems to be not more than an unelected bureaucracy over regulating everyone else, themselves ruled by Political Correctness and a outlook that every one has to be taken care of.

"We are all North Americans," he said. "Three countries, but we are all North Americans."

We share a continent...we do not share the same values or same outlook.  The philosophies of how each country works are far different (I have no love for joining with an oligarchical society that fails to provide for its own citizens and prefers to pawn them off on another country).

Bring Back POW/MIA Designation

Here's a nice letter sent by our friend, Susan Peterson, to the editor of the Concord Monitor today.

I think Shea-Porter should lead the charge on changing the designation back to POW/MIA to afford all of our Armed Forces protection under the Geneva Convention. What do you reader's think?

Before you read Sue's story, did you even know that our missing military aren't designated as POW/MIA?

We should never forget the great sacrifices by those who serve our country and keep us free!

Are NH Republicans just giving up? Around these parts it sure seems like they have...

GOP DOA

.

Back in April, the chairman of the NH Democrats told the party faithful,

“I truly believe in grassroots effort.”

Of course he does, and why not? Who is a better example of the fruit of grassroots work than Chairman Ray Buckley? First by gaining that very seat despite pressure resulting from some personal matters caught on video tape; followed by his management of the first complete takeover by Democrats of the state’s Legislative Branch in combination with the Governor’s office after generations of Republican domination. Given this, the Republicans need to listen when he speaks and understand his strategy as they witness it playing out against them.

.

“people or society at a local level rather than at the center of major political activity.”
In other words, the ordinary people that you and I would encounter every day—not the beautiful people and country-clubbers that tend to occupy the positions of power and influence. The grass roots could also be considered the people most likely to show up and vote on election day, no matter what. You could make the case that he who controls the grass roots controls the day—and wins it. It is no wonder that Chairman Buckley “truly believes in grassroots effort.”
.

In his April pep-talk, he told Democrats that

“If you look at the voting results of twenty or thirty years ago, it doesn’t look like the same place it is today.”

Gee, I wonder why? After years and years of complacency on the part of the Republicans in charge of things here in the state, they got soft. Tolerating the numerous RINOs (Republican In Name Only) that came to populate their ranks, they got to a point where they were unable, despite a “majority,” to actually run the state in a sound, conservative manner.

.

When Craig Benson held the Corner Office, and the GOP controlled the House and Senate, did Claremont get resolved? Did government shrink in any substantive way? Did basic, time-tested educational basics get reintroduced into the state’s government schools via policy and local control encouragements? Was there more openness and transparency in the whole business of running the varied levels of government? The answer to all of those questions is “no.” The Republicans came to offer nothing new and innovative for the matters that voters cared about. That, coupled with the disastrous albatross that was the Bush Administration and its lack of progress or explanation for the war, provided the recipe for the disaster that came about last November on Election Day.

.

Six months ago, Chairman Buckley told Lakes Region Democrats about his plan to manage the grass roots effort he so truly believes in, planning for future Election Day successes:

“We are hiring full time staff with nothing else to do. They’re not going to be involved anywhere else in the state—not going to do anything else. Their full time job is going to be working with the county committees.”

He then reiterated the state party’s commitment:

“There will be one full time person in the county that will be available twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week for the next year and a half to help organize-- to work with you.”

Now, I’m reasonably well-connected to the Republican Party, but, unless I missed it, I know of nobody available to help 24/7. I know that Fergus Cullen is making an effort, but a lack of money in the coffers keeps him from matching the Dems worker for worker. That shouldn’t stop the grass roots from being cultivated, but yet for the Republicans, inexplicably, it has-- Especially when we consider those who represent us at the state level. Let’s face it, in order for the “grass roots” to become active and energized, they need something to get excited about. It is hard to build support, recognition and strength when moving into an election cycle if you are continually absent from the scene.

.

The way the Democrats have done it is simple. In addition to the organization and direction provided by full-time, paid party workers, the leaders they have are always front and center making their case. Hardly a day goes by without one of them being reported on in one of the several newspapers, or they write a letter or op-ed piece promoting some issue or cause, their past accomplishments and future plans—all bearing their name. This steady drumbeat builds name recognition and the appearance of always working to get things done.

.

Sunday, our District’s Congresswoman, Carol Shea-Porter, was here in Laconia for a town hall style meeting. You know the drill—the featured speaker gives a short speech that is followed by audience questions. Generally unscripted, the answers given to questions asked by ordinary people quite often reveal much that goes unreported in the ordinary course of the news that gets out to the masses. It is a great opportunity to put politicians on the spot, forcing them to reveal positions that might otherwise remain hidden. Not a single prominent Republican “leader” showed up Sunday to take on Carol Shea-Porter. Other than questions asked by me and my Blog partner Skip Murphy, there was nary a dissenting word spoken. Media reports imply that the general feeling with Shea-Porter is satisfaction. Otherwise, people would show up and say otherwise, right?

.

Six months ago, Chairman Buckley promised to work 24/7 for the next 18 months till the election. His plans have been laid and set in motion. What have the Republicans been doing? Said Buckley in April:

“If we organize up here, and we carry the numbers I know we can carry, we’re going to have some great victories.”

What are the Republicans saying? If you listen very carefully, you’ll hear crickets chirping…

Rep. King is right.

Regarding the story coming from the Politico about Republican NY Rep. Peter King, I'm glad to hear from somebody with a bully pulpit that truly gets it when it comes to the new world war in which we find ourselves enmeshed.  It might not be pretty. In fact, what he espouses sounds harsh at the first hearing, but, when you consider all of the facts as they are known, Rep. King is right. The radicalism that we are at war with starts and finds its seedbed in mosques. While the President and his mouthpieces are unable to say it, we are at war with ISLAMIC fundamentalists. As he says in the video,
I see the main threat as coming from people that want to kill us.
Exactly. When you watch the vid, consider some points: What about the so-called "home-grown" terrorist wannabees discovered within our midst? Isn't there always some connection, some sort of a conduit provided that goes straight back to the source somewhere in the "Arab World"? How many stories have we heard on the TV about the videos and pamphlets found in mosques right here in the US? Over a year ago, I wrote in this post,
The new world war that we find ourselves fighting is against a radical fascist ideology, much like Nazism- only worse. The Germans found their wellspring of support generated from hyper-nationalism and racism, fueled by a charismatic leader. Today’s enemy, the so-called “Islamo- fascists,” have added a final and nearly unstoppable feature to the totalitarian mix: religious fervor. Can you imagine the thought of a Hitler Youth Summer camp somewhere in Manchester (NH) circa 1943-44? Such a notion sounds utterly ridiculous, right?
.
.
Thank you Peter King, for having the courage to openly say what so many cannot! Oh, and if you think what Mr. King says about the lack of cooperation on the part of the Islamic community here in the US isn't accurate, then read this...

HillaryCare - second impressions.

Siberian gulag

Soviets in Siberian gulag. Is this the fate of those who fail to
conform to the rules in Hillary's world of health care?

Second Impressions

More impressions to come....and then a contrasting with other Dem plans advocating for socialized medicine vs the free marketplace plans of the Republicans.

Biggest problem?  Lack of details.  Enough to make it appear to be "friendly" but not enough detail, especially costing and forward looking projections, to be immediately objectionable with only a cursory review.

In other words, it sounds "nice" until a second or third reading and one starts asking hard questions.

This plan will eventually put private health care insurance companies out of business:

  • They cannot discriminate against anyone for any condition.  Why bother paying for insurance until you get sick?
  • Forcing private companies to compete against the Government that will undercut their prices.
  • Giving the impression that private endeavors are ripoff artists ("excessive pemiums" and "fair" drug prices are not fair).
  • Will be highly regulating insurance and drug company revenues, profits, and free speech - "not excessive profits and marketing".

Strengthen Governmental healthcare programs over those in the private sector:

  • Strengthen Medicare and SCHIP
  • "take over" private retiree health plans

Disregards true costs of providing healthcare by again and further distorting the marketplace:

  • Limits premiums to a percentage of family income
  • Promises to go after "excessive" premiums
  • Insinuates that drug prices are excessive
  • Mandates that employers pay for health insurance (no longer optional or based on competing in the employee marketplace.
  • ALL people will be required to have insurance - there will be no choice.

Promotes Class Warfare:

  • Add new taxes on the rich ("Discontinue Bush Tax Cuts")
  • Take away tax exempt status for high salary earners
  • Promises lower premumns based on a percentage of family income

Emphasis:

  • Federal Government will make it all more affordable (I'm thinking $600 toilet seats again)
  • Federal Government will "end the upward cost spiral".

Unspoken:

  • You will be required to consume preventative care.

Missing?

  • What will the penalties be for not following this plan.  Shades of John Edwards...
  • Lack of projected increases - See RomneyCare where the expenses are exploding

The worst?

  • Couching her language in the word "choice" when in the long term, I and my family will have less.
  • Everything is "shared". No, control is not shared - this will be strictly the parview of the Government.  You and I will have no control as the private healthcare providers are squeezed.

This is a classic Liberal attempt to control a marketplace via massive manipulation of the existing tax code to make corporations and us to behave the way that a policy wonk believes is best for us.  Not me making the decision, not you, but the Government.  This will eventually result in less choice overall as Government overregulation and control will constrain further innovation and quality in the marketplace.

Less choice?  Less Freedom.

Complete layman's fisking coming.

Note: When an engineer pronounces something "elegant", it generally means a solution has been found that solves a problem with a minimum of muss and fuss.  The vast majority of the time, something that is "elegant" is also a "simple" solution - few parts to fail and fulfills the functional need in an economical fashion.

This ain't elegant.

Ruminations - 9/19/08

Thoughts as solid as the Granite upon which they were thought....

Just like what I posted yesterday, some protected classes of folks get to talk in ways (and get away with it) that I cannot.  Once again, thanks to Political Correctness and rascism.  Jesse Jackson went after Barack Obama.  Why?

Jesse Jackson sharply criticized presidential hopeful and Illinois Sen. Barack Obama for “acting like he’s white”  according to The Associated Press.

Let's keep that "is he black enough" meme going, eh Jesse? Imagine if I said that...

"You know, you look back over our history, and it doesn't take you long to realize that our people have shed more blood for other people's liberty than any other combination of nations in the history of the world.'' - Fred Thompon  9/7/07

Operative word - other

The folks over at the Washington Post can't listen well, it seems.  They totaled up our casualties over the decades defending others: 623,288.  They tried to claim that the 8 million lost in WWII by the Soviets were, in part, to "liberate" Western Europe from the Nazis.

Right....and then they spent spent the next few decades trying to take over.  That's "liberating"?

Thompson's jingoistic assertion cannot be supported by facts, barring some tortuous definition of the phrase "other people's liberty."

Journalists....please try learning history before twisting it....and trying a take down in doing so.  Jingoistic - showing a bit of a bias, eh?

News to WaPo - Most Americans and I want someone who is proud of the US to be the US President!

Now, fat is a disease...according to Bill Richardson, Dem Prez '08 candidate, and deserves protection under the ADA.

"This is an issue of basic civil rights," said Richardson. "There are no federal laws that protect obese Americans from discrimination in the workplace, school, or anywhere else. This must change."

Why?  This is not a case of skin color - they are not bound forever to be in this minority - they can change.

Asked how the A.D.A. would distinguish between obese Americans deserving of protection and merely overweight Americans, the New Mexico governor said he would defer such questions to specialists.

"Look, I’d let scientists determine that -- nutritionists -- you gotta be flexible. But it’s important to have obesity and somebody’s overweight not used as an excuse for discrimination," Richardson told ABC News. "But I’d let scientists, nutritionists determine that."

Richardson, who has managed to lose 30 lbs. since December 2006, made light of the fact that he was the only presidential candidate to address The Obesity Society.

Good question - weasel answer.  Just more pandering.

Are you smarter than a college student?

Once again, is higher education failing our society?  The Intercollegiate Studies Institute did a survey of our best and brightest college students on their knowledge of American history and civics:

Failing Our Students, Failing America: Holding Colleges Accountable for Teaching America’s History and Institutions asks: Is American higher education doing its duty to prepare the next generation to maintain our legacy of liberty?

In fall 2005, researchers at the University of Connecticut’s Department of Public Policy (UConnDPP), commissioned by the Intercollegiate Studies Institute’s (ISI) National Civic Literacy Board, conducted a survey of some 14,000 freshmen and seniors at 50 colleges and universities. Students were asked 60 multiple-choice questions to measure their knowledge in four subject areas: America’s history, government, international relations, and market economy. The disappointing results were published by ISI in fall 2006 in The Coming Crisis in Citizenship: Higher Education’s Failure to Teach America’s History and Institutions.

Seniors, on average, failed all four subjects, and their overall average score was 53.2%

Rankings here.   Take the quiz.

Infuriating!

Oregon is counting on a new tool to educate Spanish-speaking students across state schools: Mexico's curriculum.

Already in place at three Oregon high schools, the programs aims to use textbooks, a detailed online Web site, DVDs and CDs provided for free by the Mexican government to teach math, science and even U.S. history to Spanish speakers in Oregon.

Right!  Let's take the educational standards of a failing nation that has exported 1 in 10 (1 in 8?) of it workers elsewhere and use them here. So, let's just not dumb down our own materials, let's keep going further.  What does this say about the professionalism and capability of the teachers in these locations?

Also, think of this: free?  If they were that good, why are Mexico's citizens being successful there?

Mexico has made its national curriculum available to communities across the U.S. since 2001. The idea was to encourage Mexican adults and youths living abroad to continue an education often abandoned back home due to limited resources.

"We wanted people to be aware that they have to study," said Patricia Ramos, the director of national affairs for Mexico's Institute for Adult Education and National Advisory of Education for Life and Work. "You have to dare to study and make use of technology because that way, it will be easier to adapt to where you now live."

Got that - don't come back home!

Assimilation anyone?

Israel declares Gaza to be hostile

The Israeli government has declared the Gaza Strip a "hostile entity" in response to the continued rocket attacks by Palestinian militants there.

Israeli officials told the BBC fuel and electricity supplies could be targeted, but not water, food or medicine.

The militant group Hamas, which controls Gaza, said such a move would be considered a declaration of war.

[snip]

Israeli officials reportedly hope the new measures will put pressure on Hamas, which ousted its rivals Fatah to seize control of Gaza in June, to halt rocket attacks on southern Israel.

So why did it take so long?  After all, the Palestinians have said that they want to eliminate the State of Israel and keep trying to send in suicide bombers and keep launching rockets into Israel.

Good for them.

A spokesman for Hamas in Gaza, Fawzi Barhoum, condemned the decision.

"It is a declaration of war and continues the criminal, terrorist Zionist actions against our people," he said

Convicted of murdering his parents, he pleads for mercy from the court as he is now an orphan..

Chicken Wings with McCain: The Movie

Last week, Skip and I had the opportunity to travel along with Republican presidential candidate John McCain as he and his "No Surrender Tour" made its way across the Granite State. Whether he's your guy or not, his efforts to raise the sagging public support needed to sustain and finish the war in the Iraqi front of the new world war deserves our appreciation.
.
When talking about having access to a political  candidate for some real one on one, nobody holds a candle, at this point, to Senator McCain. How could you get any closer, or have a greater opportunity to engage with a would-be president? Check out this video sampler of our bus trip with John McCain. In one part, he acknowledges being with "bloggers" on the bus, with video running. That's us. This guy seems to genuinely appreciate the Blogging community. As you watch, keep in mind that it's about four minutes of film taken from about an hour's worth taken during our ride. It is but a small representation of the amount of open and free talk that we had with the Senator.
.
.
Pretty cool, eh? This was the same trip we did the Woolsey interview, which can be found by clicking here. He rode in the bus with us, too.

Moveon.org name Change

This was in the Concord Monitor today and this guy's got some great ideas for the new name for moveon.org...I like all of them and think moveout.org (of the country that is) should also be considered...let's have a name change contest! What's your idea?

WE SUPPORT OUR TROOPS AND THE MISSION TO VICTORY!

Thank you, Political Correctness - or is it tolerated Racism?

Growing up, I hated the Knicks.  Why?  They were always trying to beat my beloved (at least back then during the dynasty of Kevin, Larry, and Robert) Celts.  Given that my ardor for the once unbeatable (now hapless) team has cooled, there may be another reason?  And yes, I've made the language kid / filter friendly.

From the NY Daily News:

Isiah Explains double standard on slurs in Garden trial

Jurors heard the Knicks coach say he wouldn't stand for a white man calling a black woman a "b***h" - but wouldn't be as angry if the same words came from the mouth of a black man.

In a videotaped deposition played for the jury at fired Knicks exec Anucha Browne Sanders' sexual harassment trial, Thomas said he drew a distinction between whites and blacks when it came to the B-word.

Asked if he was bothered by a black man calling a black female "b***h," Thomas said: "Not as much. I'm sorry to say, I do make a distinction.

"A white male calling a black female a b***his highly offensive," Thomas said. "That would have violated my code of conduct."

"Maybe I shouldn't go there. ... A white male calling a black female, that is wrong with me. I'm not taking that. I'm not accepting that. ... That's a problem for me."

And then you wonder why I get so sick and tired of political correctness.  Frankly, isn't this just another form of blatant racism - the color of one's skin determines what one can say without landing in PC jail?

'Nuff said on this.

On another note, this is what the NBA has come to, when players rule the roost, even above the President of the club?

Thomas was asked if he would have disciplined Marbury if he had found out he called Browne Sanders a "black b***h." Thomas said, "As best I could, yes."

Yup, strong leadership...the operative phrase contains: asylum, inmates, running,

Vietnam War Memorial Vandalized

Here's a very disturbing story from the Washington AP:

Click here to read about the Vietnam War Memorial being vandalized.

A suggestion for the cops would be to find out where Cindy Sheehan, moveon.org people and the peaceniks were when our sacred war memorial was vandalized. The cops may also want to find out where Harry Reid, Nancy Pelosi and other democrats and their friends were when this happened. How long are we going to tolerate traitors and treasonists here in the US?

This is completely outrageous and true Americans should be absolutely appalled by this, no doubt, domestic act of continuing to spit on and dishonor our Vietnam veterans.

What the hell is wrong with people that they would deface a sacred war memorial to attempt to make a political statement? Our freedom here in the U.S. has been bought with the blood and sacrifice of our Armed Forces who have served in Vietnam and every war before and since.

This disturbs me on every level of my being. Thank God our veterans protected The Wall previously when peaceniks made it clear back in March that they intended to throw red paint on our Vietnam Wall.

Perhaps it's time that our war memorials have 24/7/365 protection from these disgraceful excuses for human beings who perpetrated this crime against humanity who have obviously lost their souls somewhere along the way...

Our democrats should view this as a wake-up call as to what they're encouraging and perpetuating here in the United States of America! Oh yeah, these gutless dems can't even do the right thing in denouncing the moveon.org ad placed in the NY Times dishonoring Gen. Petraeus since moveon.org provides them with the most money for their campaigns. How many times do I have to keep saying: WAKE UP AMERICA before it's too late and we're living under a terrorist regime! Snap out of your denial and stop supporting political parties and causes that will eventually cost you and everyone in the USA their freedom!

Especially here in NH, get Carol Shea-Porter and Paul Hodes out of office before they can support more hatred against our troops and hatred against the United States of America! Vote for anyone other than a democrat in the next election unless you want your new leader to be an islamofacist!

DREAM Act -Another attempt at legalizing and providing amnesty for illegal immigrants

Well, the Senate is at it again.  They are about to vote on legislation that contains the DREAM Act.  Briefly put, it allows for illegal immigrants to receive discounted tuition at colleges.

Note:  members of our armed services, who put themselves in harms way to protect us, are not entitled to this.  My sons are not entitled to this.

Why should the sons and daughters of legal citizens be penalized for being.....well, legal?

Neither of my two Senators, Sununu or Gregg, have a public stance on how they will vote - I know as I just called.  No press releases, nothing on their website, and the receptionists have no information on how they will vote.

Call their offices: (202) 224-2841 and (202) 224-3324.

They listened once - they will listen if you call!

Rev 'em Up!

This past Sunday, my hubby Dick and I hopped on our motorcycles at 7:30 am here in Bradford to meet up with some of the Combat Vets Motorcycle Association members, click here for their website, to ride to Littleton for their monthly meeting. It was about 40 degress when we left home so I pulled out the long underwear, winter riding gloves, face mask, leathers, etc. Believe it or not, I wasn't too cold although I was happy to arrive in Tilton to meet up with the CVMA members to warm up a tad and grab a bite to eat before we left for Littleton.

My husband is the Campaign Director for the Gold Star Mothers Memorial Association (honoring the mothers of NH's fallen heroes), click here, and he had met some of the CVMA members before since they are helping to organize a motorcycle run for Saturday, October 20, (mark your calender) to benefit the Gold Star Mothers Memorial. A Gold Star Mothers statue will be placed in Manchester in 2008. Even if you don't ride a motorcycle, I encourage you to donate to this extremely worthy cause since they need to raise $250,000 by March 2008 to pay for the beautiful statue and other incidentals for the park. Many volunteers are already donating their time, landscaping, excavation work, etc.

All of the riders are either combat vets, supporters or auxillary members. My husband and I are both joining this extraordinary association. Hubby is a Vietnam vet and I'm his number one fan. I asked what the "initiation" to join was all about and was told that there is no "initiation" since serving in combat more than fulfills the requirements of joining. I liked the group and its mission immediately. These people "get it!"

I was extremely impressed with everyone and especially their concern for safety and road courtesy. We road in staggered formation, appropriate safe distance apart, with a leader and a "tail gunner" who's job it was to pull off with anyone if they signaled him so they wouldn't be left alone or behind. Since I've riden with other groups that were completely unorganized and even somewhat dangerous in their approach to riding, I felt extremely comfortable from the start. Everyone rides as a group and turn signals and hand signals are combined when changing lanes or passing. I like the "no man/woman left behind attitude. Yep, there was one other woman on her own bike which is always nice for me since many times I'm the only woman riding my own bike in a group of men...not that I'm complaining, ha! Yeah, they all "get it" from experience, and I knew that if I rode on another day without my husband, I would be well taken care of and never left behind.

We arrived in Littleton and Gary bought a round at the VFW to honor his Uncle Frank who had recently died, a WWII vet, and he made a lovely speech about his uncle (I almost felt as though I knew him from what Gary said) and we toasted to him. He said it was what his Uncle would have wanted...other vets honoring and acknowledging his passing by tossing back a drink and "saluting" him! It was precious and my respect grew even more for the CVMA members. Things lightened up a bit and alot of good-natured bantering goes around among the group. Since I got stuck in a whole in the grass with my bike while we were slowing pulling into park and someone had to push me out, I, of course, had to take a couple of humorous barbs myself, but it only served to make me feel a part of the group. But, I have a long memory boys, so I'll get ya back later!

We went upstairs for the meeting and the business side of things got taken care of in a couple of hours. The CVMA does great work in helping homeless vets and other extremely worthy endeavors to actually support our troops with practical help rather than merely talking about support. Carol Shea-Pompous and Paul Hodes could learn alot from this group if they were only willing to learn.

About eight of us who did not have scheduling conflicts rode from Littleton to Concord to welcome home the approx. 150 National Guard members from the 3643rd. What a joyous occasion especially for my dear friend Sue Peterson who's son Alex was one of the returnees from Iraq. Welcome home and thank you all for your service to our country! It was great except, of course, for the political speeches especially the one given by Paul Hodes who is just one of the talkers not doers. He did not get a big round of applause and personally I wanted to boo him but refrained since I did not want to dishonor these brave men and women.

Members of the CVMA found a woman returnee they knew and presented her with her CVMA patch and personally welcomed her home and thanked her for her service. Again, my respect grew. Our motorcycles were parked in a line along with members of the Patriot Guard. We all stood in front of our bikes at "parade rest" with our American flags to show our respect. This is how it's done for you peaceniks who hate our troops and continue to disrespect and disparage them and their service.

I was amazed that several Guardsmen and family members made it a point to thank us for being there to support them. It was rather humbling and the real thanks goes out to all of the 3643rd and their families who have sacrificed so much for us. My respect and appreciation continues to grow for our military.

Perhaps your opinion of bikers is connected to the Hell's Angels persona and images of recklessness and lawlessness. Nothing could be further from the truth about the Combat Vets Motorcycle Association and many of the other veteran-connected motorcycle groups. The honorable comradity is amazing, and hopefully you'll be able to experience for yourself some day how humbling it is to be in the presence of true greatness and loyalty among our combat veterans. My sincere thanks to all of the CVMA members I met. I really felt welcomed and hope I can contribute in some small way to supporting your cause. God bless all of you and welcome home!

The differences could not be starker

healthcare

I have remarked on Meet The New Press and have blogged that the differences between the Republican and Democratic Presidential hopefuls are vast.  One one side, the Dems are all advocating for Universal Healthcare with massive amounts of governmental intrusion vs free-market and real individual choice of the Republicans.

I just quickly glanced at the new and unimproved HillaryCare plan (stealing the mandated insurance plan from Mitt but with the overbearance of her old plan) which relies a great deal of governmental manipulation.  I am not enthused.

Stay tuned - I think my mission is to start really researching who's offering what and what the ramifications may be for all of us.

Again - will you want government to control your healthcare, or do you want to control your healthcare?  Do you want the ability to have real choice, or just choices that are limited to what government allows you to have?

This single issue may define how we live with democracy for a good long time - when one makes massive changes to the system that makes up 16% of our GDP, the most singular law, the Law of Unintended Consequences will reign supreme.  Hopefully, the info that the 'Grok will present will assist you in making a wise decision.

Or not.

Wings of Freedom

From time to time, Skip has been wont to put pictures here of what he likes to call "jet goodness." Whether it's jet powered luges, or pictures of jets, he just loves 'em all. Me? I think they're cool, and, if we're talkin' jets, I am partial to the ME262. That being said, before there were jets, there were the prop jobs. And what machines they were! With a name like "Flying Fortress" or "Liberator," nothing was more awesome back in the day... The day being World War 2, of course. You know-- Back when we pounded our enemies to dust whenever we could. Not jets here, just good ole' fashioned "bomber goodness!"

You asked. Fred answers...

A while back, we among several Blogs that were invited to receive and forward reader questions to Fred Thompson, who would then respond via YouTube. The second answer has arrived. This time, the question came through our buddy John Hawkins' RightWingNews. The topic? The Medicaid Drug Bill. Watch...
.
.

Carol Shea Porter: The answer is "no."

Carol Shea Porter
Carol Shea Porter (D-NH)  says "no" to any more money for Iraq War.
.
At a town hall meeting here in Laconia on Sunday, my Congresswoman, Carol Shea-Porter, to the delight of the mostly Democrat and Independent people in attendance, promised to

"vote against a supplemental (military) budget, and will continue to vote against it."

When Nathaniel Gurien of North Conway asked why some Democrats aren't doing the same, Shea-Porter stated that she thought that it was because if there was no supplemental budget, they
"truly believe that the troops won't get what they need."
She promised that she is doing all that she can do to help persuade them that even without the funds, the troops would still get what they need. She reassured the crowd that she would not waver, but could only do so much as far as other fellow Democrats who still support funding the Iraq War. Nathaniel wondered if it was simply because
"they were simply afraid of being called names."
I found Nathaniel rather interesting in that he appears as frustrated with the Democrats as I am with the Republicans. He noted that
"The Democrats are too afraid of their 2008 prospects to do what we elected them to do in '06."
Not Carol Shea Porter. She assured the forty or so people in attendance that she will continue to work to end the war in Iraq. The one redeeming factor in this for me, such that it is, is that, to her credit, Ms. Shea-Porter is honest about where she comes down on this issue, and will not waver. If only we could find some politicians on our side that could be so reliable on such key issues. Nancy Pelosi must be quite proud of her protoge from New Hampshire...
.
[Note: while coming from opposite ends of the political spectrum, Nathaniel and his wife and I spent some time chatting after the event. While we all disagree on the issues, we enjoyed each other's company. This is how politics should be...]

Congresswoman Carol Shea - Porter visits Laconia

NH District 1 Congresswoman Carol Shea-Porter

Yet another political meeting.  This time, it is for NH District 1 Congresswoman Carol Shea-Porter at the Laconia Community center (Sun, 9/16, 3pm).  Pretty much only older people present - met Ron Tunning (a former guest on Meet The New Press) who greeted me as a member of the Right Wing Establishment (He is the Democratic Chair of Laconia - all in good fun...I think) and Brenda Bahr (City Councilor in Laconia), Matt Lahey (Laconia Mayor), Bob (Northeast POW/MIA Network).

So, per normal, here are my notes.  Comments in bold.  I'll have an MP3 up later on today click here to listen to an MP3 I did.  Given that the PA system was all but non-functional and she was about 30 feet away, you may need to turn it up and listen well.

  • My question  (at 34:56)
  • My follow up  (at 36:19)
  • Doug's question  (at 38:14)
  • First Follow up  (at 39:09)
  • Second follow up  (at 40:46)
  • Bob Jones's question about changing back to POW/MIA  (at 43:23)

Matt did the intro for her - she is on the Armed Services and Education and Labor committees.  Matt and the airport director just got her call that she got a $1.9 million grant for Laconia Airport for improvements.

I wonder how much traffic the Airport really gets outside of the two Nextel Cup races? Not a complaint - I just don't know, as this is a local airport and not one that I would consider a regional one like MHT.

She believes it is important to travel around to talk about the military.

She is not endorsing anyone for President (Skip - at least so far?).  She believes that she is an ambassodor of the state.

Describes DC as Thanksgiving with a dysfunctional family.  We all have to watch our tone and be civil to each other....not attack each other at a personal level.  Says that they get along on the Armed Forces Committee.

She just came back from China - both Repubs and Dems on the trip (she said even on the Pelosi to Syria there were Rs [RINOs!]).  She is making great pains to say that she was in Hawaii in getting over there but as the junket was on military transport, there was no tourism there.

She brought up the Flying Tigers - the Chinese have a memorial there for them.  She related that the Chinese are not transparant.

The Chinese like Ike Skelton, so they honored him by letting us on board the destroyer. When she asked her escorts, while touring a Chinese destroyer, she asked "how many do you have?" and the response was simply "several".  She emphasised that despite this we have to have this dialog.

And this is new information?  Not to be snarky, but who'da thunk it of a Communistic regime that has been recently launching a LOT of cyber attacks on the US, Britain, and a number of other Western nations.  Why in earth would they be upfront and open on anything - I do not believe it would be in their national interest (maybe ours, but not their's)? Let's be clear here - they still see us as enemies that need to be defeated.

She didn't eat much while there (she didn't know what was being served so she used the old kid trick of cutting things up and moving them around on the plate).

They care that we care. How?  One discussion was on product safety and unfair trade market - she had brought up unfair prices.  When she was doing the tourist deal [I believe - check the recording] at the Great Wall, Foreign Ministry then called and chatted for 20 minutes.  Her observation:   Contrasted that cell phone call on Wall vs Spaulding turnpike - we have to invest more.  The Great Wall connection was flawless.

Well, when the Chinese government brings you to visit something, you can be sure that things will be planned to have gone well.  If connections were iffy, do you really think they would have placed that call?  Don't you think that IF the Chinese gov't want something to work, it will.  Here, private capital requires an ROI (as opposed to a governmental entity that doesn't have to worry about little details like staying in business.

The Chinese brought up Taiwan - they are adamant that they do not want Taiwan to go free (the said that equivalent example would be as if Florida left).  Claims that President is not in favor of Taiwan having the upcoming referendum on that issue.

Note: some talk here on Iraq, missed some of it.

Went to Gulf Coast during the August break due to Katrina.  Headline there - "Congress brings hope".  The Congress Reps were there to say that they (New Orleans) had not been forgotten.  She is concerned about their mental health concerns due to PTSD since they have been under stress for the last two years and lack of hospital / mental health facilities.

None of us want to forget those folks and the devastation.

Not one word from the Congresswoman about how much we have actually spent so far, and the job is not done yet.  Look, she complains about the war cost - but not one mention of the about $120 billion - for everyone there, it is the equivalent of two houses and a car.

Look, if someone wants to live there, fine.  But why do we have to subsidize a city on the coast, below sea level, and rebuild them after most of the blame should lie on the New Orlean levy boards for being corrupt and inept, the Democratic Major for being worse, and the Democratic Governer being paralyzed and inactive at the wrong time.

I know what the law states, but do we have to do this again if another hurricane comes in?

They blame FEMA for a lot of the problems, especially with turnover.  Concentrated on desperation.

A native remarked - "If you don't want us, France will take us back"

CSP mentioned gas and grain....we need them.

She is right on this - much of the Midwest grain coming down the river does go through the Port of New Orleans.  However, that is not the problem - rebuilding the commercial part is easy compared to the entire city. Gas and Oil too?  Is CSP advocating helping the private sector?

Talked about making college education more affordable.  Larger Pell grants...looan forgiveness, reduce interest, 10K science / match teachers.

Um, until there is some way that the providers of this service are incentivized to lower the costs, the colleges are just going to run merrily to the bank - this will result in nothing more than more money flowing in....and they can raise rates again!  And once that happens, it will make it harder for poorer students once again.

Iraq question - missed the question as I was taking pix.  ON Iraq about accountability  Story of a guy that takes a bag of money, jumps into a Blackhawk, delivers it, all with no tracking. We have put our treasuer and citizens at risk, the least we can do is know where it goes.

On this, I would agree - it has to be tracked

She voted against the supplemental vote.  She will vote for a date to leave.  She will not vote for continuing.  She blames the Senate.

Question and Answer time

Complsory service?  Peace corp?Promoting national service?

The soldiers now are much better trained and higher than with the draft.  She does not want a draft.  She does not want more troops that can be sent to Iraq.  We have to grow the number of soldiers.  Were right on Afghanistan (we lost our friends). Half of the West Point graduates, who are supposed to lead our future Army, leave shortly after their term is up.  We have to show that we honor them and their mission.

I asked my question about how squaring the dropping of size of the military  and how she would grow the military.

She said a lot, but never directly answered my question.  She brought up the fact that the age limit has been boosted to 42, bonuses up to $20K for new enlistees, morales waivers, lowerd AVSFAB scores.

Gen Patraues - do you not believe him?

He is an honorable man.  She brought up her husband.  He does not carry out policy; he carries out the President's poolicies [she is trying to discredit his testimony as she did not tell that while Bush decides, it is the General's strategy].  She is quoting the retired general......brought up the alleged differences between him and Admiral Fallon [which has been discredited by Fallon].
His assesment is different than others.  Brought up the WaPo 9/2004  article by Gen P.  Claimed that if she changed the dates it would be the same testimony.
Contrasted the situation with putting 50 cops out - it will make peace but not change the criminals
Said they don't want to be civil.  Brought up displacement / exile stats.

Bob Jones - people abandoned a different generation of veterans.  Will she support HR111 - to fully investigate as MIA / POW - classification has been changed to other.  What will you do to change it back to POW/MIA?

She shuffled him off to staff.  SHE DIDN'T ANSWER THE QUESTION

Accountability - why hasnt' the audit already happen?  Will changing the congress make it happen?
Do you agree with Priorities NH that we can have $60 billion out and not effect anything and put it into human services?

1)  Exectuve branch, DOD is responsible - the White House is responsible.  She said that she got shut out of info that another bunch got it (was in the Jones Commission).  Complained about classifying everything.  Congress is doing what it is supposed to do as a co-equal branch.  A Constitutional struggle going on.  Brought up Pay as you Go.  New program means that there has to be an offset (if do schip, then tobacco tax).

[Note: not once did she ever talk about cutting programs - only tax increases.  With the tobacco tax, she was quite happy that this tax only hit one set of citizens - almost as if their smoking was a moral fault, IMHO].

2)  She does not agree with them all together.  She belives that there is room to cut but we have we have more enemies than before.  But we need to use diplomacy more than we have before.

She has no idea why we are in Iraq.......She claims that our soldiers could have caught OBL if that had been their mission.

[insinuating that they were deliberately pulled off the mission - Skip]

We have 100+K contractors.....25K SF and secret guys.  Not happy with Dem Congress, to end war.  Are dems fearing 2008 prospects?   Afraid of Rs calling Dems a bad name?  Heard we don't have the votes?  Question - why is it not structurally not possible to not introduce spending bills to not fund the war?

Agreed that her platform was to end the war.  If you believe that folks in the field will not get what they need in the firld, they will not vote against the supplemental.  EG she voted for MRAP, stuff she believes that they need.

Follow up- equipping them is one thing - that is a baloney issue.  Can the Dems not defend themselves against bad names?
This is a serious issue....and many believe it would hurt the troops.  She cannot know what everyone believes in the Dem caucus.  Bush has no choice in withdrawing the troops - there aren't any.  We didn't deal with the corruption, the terrorists, didn't build the govt, didn't reconstruct...the sheik got killed.  Military has been phenomenal but they cannot run a country for them.

She makes the claim that us being in Iraq is making it worse.  Anbar is not better.  Sheiks decided to work with us, probably temp, to get rid of AQ.  Sunni and Shiites.  Sunnis are working to with us just to get rid of them. AQ was not there bofore.  AQ is not the major problem....Sunni vs Shia is.

Can we challenge it as a war of terror - they are a bunch of criminals.

Brings in General Clark.  Claimed that a rebpu said that any general that disagreed got a new title - retired. DID NOT ANSWER THE QUESTION

Signing Statements - biggest threat to democracy.  How can our Constittion survive?

Bush has done this more than any other Pres in history.  Spector and she sponsored a bill that will do WHAT?  Pres job is to either sign or veto....she admits that they are not illegal

Jetiness - Nextel Cup style at KCLI (Laconia Airport)

Emblem on Rusty Wallace's winglet

More jets!  No, nothing "different" about these - other then who they may belong to.  Today was the first race of the Chase in the Nextel Cup racing series at New Hampshire International Speedway (Clint Bowyer won the Sylvania 300).

Now, I'm not a huge racing fan, but I'll stop the clicker and watch from time to time, especially when the race is at any of the super speedways due to the higher speeds.  However, since NHIS has two Cup races, TMEW (and I!) gets two treats a year by going down to the Laconia Airport (actually located in Gilford, NH) and watch the jets take off (of which there are quite a number).  While many go to see if they can spot a driver, we just like to watch the planes.  Thus, here are a couple here (shots of Rusty Wallace's, Kevin Harvick, and Denny Hamlin) with more after the jump along with a number of helicopter "ferry" trips

Here is a commercial Budweiser produced after 9/11. They aired it only once so as not to benefit financially from it - they just wanted to acknowledge the tragic event. This is so consistent with a company who always does things with a ton of class!! Click here.

Negative People!

This is something to think about when negative people are doing their best to rain on your parade. So remember this story the next time someone who knows nothing, and cares less, tries to make your life miserable.

A woman was at her hairdresser's getting he r hair styled for a trip to Rome with her husband. She mentioned the trip to the hairdresser, who responded:
"Rome? Why would anyone want to go there? It's crowded and dirty. You're crazy to go to Rome. So, how are you getting there?"

"We're taking Continental," was the reply! . "We got a great rate!"

"Continental?" exclaimed the hairdresser. " That's a terrible airline. Their planes are old, th eir flight attendants are ugly, and they're always late. So, where are you staying in Rome?"

"We'll be at this exclusive little place over on Rome's Tiber River called Teste."

"Don't go any further. I know that place. Everybody thinks its gonna be something special and exclusive, but it's really a dump, the worst hotel in the city! The rooms are small, the service is surly, and they're overpriced.

So, whatcha' doing when you get there?"

"We're going to go to see the Vatican and we hope to see the Pope."

"That's rich," laughed the hairdresser. "You and a million other people trying to see him. He'll look the size of an ant.

Boy, good luck on this lousy trip of yours. You're going to need it."

A month later, the woman again came in for a hairdo. The hairdresser asked her about her trip to Rome.

"It was wonderful," explained the woman, "not only were we on time in one of Continental's brand new planes, but it was overbooked, and they bumped us up to first class. The food and wine were wonderful, and I had a handsome 28-year-old steward who waited on me hand and foot.

And the hotel was great! They'd just finished a $5 million remodeling job, and now it's a jewel, the finest hotel in the city. They, too, were overbooked, so they apologized and gave us their owner's suite at no extra charge!"

"Well," muttered the hairdresser, "that's all well and good, but I know you didn't get to see the Pope."

"Actually, we were quite lucky, because as we toured the Vatican, a Swiss Guard tapped me on the shoulder, and explained that the Pope likes to meet some of the visitors, and if I'd be so kind as to step into his private room and wait, the Pope would personally greet me.

Sure enough, five minutes later, the Pope walked through the door and shook my hand! I knelt down and he spoke a few words to me."

"Oh, really! What'd he say ?"

He asked: "Where'd you get the goofy Hairdo?"

What? We are Fighting an International Mafia?

On September 12, Phillip Walker published this piece in the Concord Monitor.

Well, you know me, I had to write in and respond with this. Here's another letter to the editor responding to Mr. Walker's editorial.

I think Mr. Walker needs to stick to training staff of the Afghan Foreign Ministry in international legal practice although with friends like him, who needs enemies? I'm a bit concerned about exactly what other kind of anti-American and unpatriotic stuff he's telling these people he's "training."

Why do people refuse to believe that there are evil forces out there that quite simply just want to kill Americans? Saying that there is no global war on terror doesn't stop the global war on terror it just emboldens America's enemies.

Republicans bang Hillary. Oh! Don't stop! I love it! When Republicans attack, that is.

Hillary Clinton
.
I heard the first shots at Hillary Clinton & Moveon.org's mistreatment of General Petraeus from John McCain during a bloggers' conference call earlier this week. You know the story-- about the "General Betray-us' full page ad in the New York Times the day he testified before Congress. The same day that Hillary accused him of lying with her "suspension of disbelief" comment. McCain's open and unambiguous condemnation was quickly followed by most of the other Republican Presidential wannabees. Fred did it in Florida. Mitt Romney, on MSNBC's "Morning Joe" said
"I frankly don't understand why Hillary Clinton hasn't repudiated MoveOn.org at this point. And I'm afraid the truth is that MoveOn.org has purchased the Democratic Party, if you will. That it's funding, and the status of this 527, and the voice it has in the Democratic Party is so powerful that it's now calling the shots. And that Hillary Clinton, and Barack Obama and John Edwards are afraid to repudiate an ad and an organization which has taken a disgusting course against a great American."
And of course, Rudy Giuliani landed a right hook with an ad in the New Times of his own slamming the Democrats, Hillary in particular, for what they said and printed about Petraeus. It's now one of the stories making the rounds of the Blogosphere ansd cable news channels in a big way. I can only say that

I LOVE IT!

Finally-- Republicans on the offense. Taking shots at the Democratic opponents. Defending themselves and their positions. Pointing out the many points on which they are oh-so-very wrong. There is no way Republicans will have a chance at winning next November if they don't get in the game. Watching the upper tier candidates on the Republican side using the bully pulpit and the message delivery tools at their disposal with great vigor is inspiring indeed. Hopefully this will begin at the local level as well.
.
Here's Rudy's latest salvo in our "war" with the Democrats and their standardbearer. Some call this an "attack ad." Others, like me, call it pointing out the truth that might otherwise go unreported or remembered.:
.
.
What is starting to happen now is a race among Republicans as to who can whack the opponent Dems the hardest-- instead of each other. I like it when Democrats get exposed for all to see. A lot! Or, on second thought, maybe not... After all, would we want really want to see the "emperor" (Hillary) without any clothes? What am I talkning about? Of course we do! What were YOU thinking? ;-)
.

Marchand Out

Former Governor Jeanne Shaheen’s entry into the Democratic Senate primary has caused Portsmouth Mayor Steve Marchand to bow out.  That’s too bad, though it is a judicious decision, certainly.

Marchand is a bright and savvy politician who appears to be genuinely interested in doing what he believes is right for his community and state.  I disagree with a great many of his policy preferences, to be sure.  But I have watched him in action as Mayor of Portsmouth and have been very impressed with his dedication and commonsense approach to governing.  His departure from the Democratic primary is unlikely to diminish the brightness of this rising star.

Candidates Katrina Swett and Jay Buckey plan to remain in the race, for the time being, at least.

Chicken Wings with McCain - No Surrender Tour

Senator John McCain

As you can tell, the 'Grok was was at Senator McCain's event in Franklin this past Thursday.  The neat thing, and one of the highlights of what has happened since we started GraniteGrok and blogging in general, was to be able to "Ride the Bus".  Just before the event, it was looking like only one of us was going to be able to ride from Franklin to Concord. However, just after the start of the event, we were informed that both of us were going to be able to ride!

It is one thing to listen to a candidate on TV, or in a commercial, Op-Eds, written articles, or at a large staged event (think hundreds or thousands of people attending).  These are what I call the mass politics - politics in the large. It is quite another to talk of the retail politics that we have here in NH - the town hall events are at the upper end (a hundred or less) to the smaller house events like at the Grimm house in Franklin.

Getting to sit with a major Presidential candidate for 40 minutes on The Bus - the ultimate in retail politics!  We were joined by only a few: the Concord Monitor, LA Times, US World and News Report (and a couple others) and thus had the chance to ask questions concerning the No Surrender  message.

I still have a couple of issues on which I disagree with the Senator, but I have to tell you, this is a guy with integrity.  Talking and joking with him, I can readily announce that this is a guy that I could go to the bar and have a beer with him - and I don't drink!!!  And this is part of the retail politics - not only listening and questioning the stances on the issues, but trying to measure the mettle of the man (or woman) as well.  Character does count!  Do they hold the stance they espouse, or do they really believe it?  In a commercial?  Hard to say, isn't it.  In person, after more than a few minutes, most of us can figure it out.  That's why we want to see the folks - this IS one of the New Hampshire advantages.

Anyways, back on message - er, MP3.   Here are a few MP3 clips from the Senator from the Event and while on The Bus.

The Event:

Do we chose to lose or win?   (0:24 seconds)

I joined the press gaggle and was able to ask: If the Dems are always talking about the power of the grassroots here in US politics, why are the disregarding the positives of the grassroot actions in Iraq?                                    His answer is here. (1:32)

Mentioning (0:53) that the AQ fascists killed a leading sheik that he had met and had helped to swing Anbar province away from supporting AQ.   More here (0:27)

MoveOn.org despicable ad about General Patraeus here. (0:49)

The Democratic vision of housing vs McCain's here (0:18, the Grimm residence is a very nice place indeed!)

Quick byte - retail politics?  Friends and neighbors... (0:19)

On the No Surrender Bus (Please note: I have really had to try to clean up the audio due to bus noice.  Given that I am a software engineer and not a real audio engineer, I apologize for the clips not being in what I would call pristine quality).

General (13:14) discussion on Moqtada Al Sadr, the influence of Iran, a few jokes

Listen (2:32) as we listen to McCain be phone interviewed by Jon Stewart (I liked the bloggers part!)

Cute (2:58) story of how Colbert complained about getting on the "first" bus (instead of the press bus)

Concord Monitor (3:13) reporter asks about how to help the military (question centered around a soldier going back to Iraq for a fourth tour).

McCain at Franklin - the Grimm house party

As Doug's post on James Woolsey stated, the 'Grok got the chance to go to yet another Presidential event - Senator McCain at the the Grimm residence in Franklin, NH.  While Doug has been to this kind of event before, this was my first at a smaller sized event (about 70, a few more, in attendance).  I've got a few shots of the event (after the jump).  I also have some audio clips that I will be adding in another post as to what was said.

My impressions of the event was that it was a lower key kind of event than the town hall styles that he is famous for.  It was different in that while Senator McCain spoke, there were a number of other speakers (former CIA Director James Woolsey, Bill Grimm (the host), and a number of vets that were riding with him) as well.  McCain had a point to make and there were others to help him make that point - the US has to win this fight in Iraq.  There is no honor in just giving up.  The war will not stop just because we take our ball and go home [me-> like some spoiled brat].

The emphasis was on the Iraq war - the Senator has moved his talks and speeches to what he does best in this campaign; the defense of the country from Islamofascism is it.  When he spoke, he was confident beyond belief.  This is his territory, his expertise; no one talks about this any better than he.  He served, he fought, and he suffered in the defense of this country.  Of all of the Presidential candidates, he owns this topic.  Period.

It's no secret that he has supported the war from its inception (albeit not in the fashion that President Bush has run it since reaching Baghdad).  No secret either that he has been critical on how the war has been waged since (and SecDef Rumsfield too).  However, as is his wont, he has once again cast his political life on this issue. Not that he is ignoring any of the other topics, but the polls show that he is most believeable on this - and it has energized him.  And has created a positive feedback cycle.

I have to believe that this will spill over into the other topics that are being debated in the media and in the televised events.  After all, nothing breeds success like success, right?  The Mayor has 911 and McCain the war - the toughest guys in the race in the top tier.  I believe that while Romney does talk the line, he does not have the experience to match either of these two.

Will it be enough to win the primary races?  I don't know - no one does.  But here's the deal - the surge is working.  Small steps to be sure, but it is happening from the ground up and the American public is beginning to notice.  And the American public loves winners and hate losers.  I think that seeing that the grassroots in Iraq are starting to make headway, Americans may well indeed (if framed right) adopt these "underdogs".

Which then plays back into the mess that the Democrats are making for themselves by maligning General Patreus and aligning themselves with MoveOn.org.  Frankly, they haven't learned much from Vietnam in these past 40 years - don't pick on individual military members.  Add to this our all-volunteer army, Viet Nam vets refusing to allow what happened to them to ever happen again,  and parents, family, and friends rallying against these (of late) scurrilous and unfounded attacks upon the military in an attempt to politicize them, their tactic to win the political war by trying to lose the actual war will backfire on the Dems big time.

And FINALLY, Republicans, led primarily by the Prez candidates, especially McCain, are keeping the heat up (as well they should - somebody's got to lead - nobody else seems to have taken up the mantle of leadership).

McCain is uniquely positioned to take advantage of this (and looking at the rising polls, is already benefiting from it already):

Line of the event:

His daughter was also with him.  Having just graduated from Columbia, McCain said that he was the proud owner of a $200,000 screensaver.

Hey Doug!  He's talking your tune!

And then the FUN began! After the attendees had the chance to have their picture taken and then the "press gaggle" (where the MSM stand around and try to ask interesting or timely questions), it was time to board the bus....and the Groksters got to go!

Senator John McCain

Bill Grimm was the host for the event.  He is the former Franklin School Board Chair, has done other things in local politics, and now is the Chair of the local charter school (and is fighting like cats and dogs to give more to local families in education choice).  We are hoping to have him on Meet The New Press show sometime in the future.

No mistaking whose bus this is!

Crowd starting to build

What about Iran?

Yesterday Skip and I had the opportunity to attend a "No Surrender" rally with John McCain at the Franklin home of the Grimm family. Following that, we rode on the his campaign bus where we chatted some detailed points about Iraq, listened in as he did the Jon Stewart show via cellphone, and ate some chicken wings with the Republican hopeful. Travelling with the Senator were several well-known military men, some POWs, all heroes. Among them was former CIA Director (under Bill Clinton) James Woolsey, Jr. A somewhat familiar face on the cable news circuit, he has long been one of my favored "go-to" people for foreign policy matters. The Wikipedia tells us
Woolsey has been known primarily as a conservative Democrat—hawkish on foreign policy issues but more traditionally Democratic on economic and social issues.[citation needed] A classic Washington insider, Woolsey has held important positions in both Democratic and Republican administrations. His influence has been felt during the Carter, Reagan, Bush (elder), and Clinton administrations. Woolsey is known for clearly articulating the national security argument in support of moving away from fossil fuels and towards distributed generation. In a recent interview with THE FUTURIST magazine he argued that U.S. dependence on Middle Eastern oil ranks "very high" as a national security concern. 2007 speech in Houston Woolsey was among the first to point the finger at Iraq in the immediate days following the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.[1] During the second Bush administration, he has been strong proponent of the war in Iraq.
Mr. Woolsey has thrown his support to John McCain. This, in my mind, says something about Senator McCain's grasp of the situation we face in the world. As I respect Woolsey's insight and perspective, I give great creedence to his pick for president. As I've often stated, the number one issue for me is the new world war.
.
Before we boarded the bus, I had a chance to ask a question of R. James Woolsey, Jr. about the situation in Iran. With camera in hand-- unfortunately poorly shot, and lit, (I did better later), I got to hear a realistic, sober assessment of another piece of the "Axis of Evil" and what the future might possibly bring. More reason, as if we needed more, to choose wisely when picking the next president. We'll never get away with another "holiday from history" like we did in the nineties.

Sharing good news from a Blue Star Mom (and frequent contributor of blond jokes here at the 'Grok--don't worry, she's blond!)

Sue (center) with other families supporting the troops in Exeter, NH.
.
Our friend Sue Peterson sent the following note. She is tireless in her support of the troops and their mission. Recall she was part of the "Moms of Fury" that braved the elements and took on defeatist politicians. Her son Alex is one of the great American soldiers that has been bravely defending us by serving in Iraq. His part of the mission has ended, and he's coming home, along with others as well. Needless to say, Sue is quite thankful and excited.
Good morning everyone...

Well - here is the latest...
.
Love you all so much for listening to me this past year and all the support you have given to Bill and me - you have been a light during trying times...and someone to share and laugh with...I will still send info on supporting the troops (just because he is home, does not stop my commitment to our troops, etc.)...and blond jokes - LOL!!!!
.
Please feel free to pass on this info...

Blessings,

He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty.  I will say of the Lord, "He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust."

The 3643d will be arriving home to NH on Sunday- September 16th!!!
.
For some this is merely a reminder, for others it might be the first news you have heard.  We ask that families and friends try to arrive by 4:00PM at the Flight Facility on Regional Drive, in Concord.
.
The race will be getting out at the same time - so please try and get there - beat that traffic!!!
.
Don't forget your flags!
.
See you Sunday!
Drop us an email if you would like more detailed directions. We couldn't be happier for Sue. Of course, for others the mission continues. We'll all keep praying for their safe returns too, while steadfastly supporting the mission all the way to its successful conclusion.

The Dems dreamin' of Jeannie no more... A looming nightmare for Republicans?

Kathy Sullivan

Are you ready to rumble?

The Dems certainly are! Get ready for some nasty politics around these parts... Former NH Democratic Chair/ attack-dog Kathy Sullivan (shown above--a Granite Grok NH Power-Player) has gotten her wish-- Jeanne Shaheen is reported in today's Union Leader to be set for a run against John E. Sununu.
.
Jeanne Shaheen..................Bill Shaheen
Former NH Gov. Jeanne Shaheen                Former "First Hunk" Hubby Bill
.
This is not good news for Republicans (or America?). Jeanne Shaheen, who lost to Sununu by a small margin in 2002, will find herself in a radically different state of New Hampshire today than back then. Republican fortunes are down. Democrats are motivated and on the move. Near as I can tell, many Republican stalwarts, at least the locals in these parts, still appear atrophied and stunned from last November, basically stuck on stupid. I'm sure this isn't unique to just here in Belknap County. Does anybody think that a Shaheen team that includes her pugnacious husband Bill, a power in his own right, and an energized and rested Kathleen Sullivan aren't poised to take full advantage of the Republicans' continued malaise?
.
John E. Sununu
Sen. John E. Sununu: A tough road ahead?
.
The battle has been joined. The stage is set. There is much work to be done. I cannot bear the thought of a NH Congressional contingent that includes Hodes, Shea-Porter, AND Jeanne Shaheen...

Friday Humor - more blonde jokes

Once again, blonde jokes from a blonde!

A blonde decides to try horseback riding, even though she has had no lessons or prior experience. She mounts the horse unassisted and the horse immediately springs into motion.

It gallops along at a steady and rhythmic pace, but the blonde begins to slip from the saddle. In terror, she grabs for the horse's mane, but cannot seem to get a firm grip. She tries to throw her arms around the horse's neck, but she slides down the side of the horse anyway. The horse gallops along, seemingly ignorant of its slipping rider.

Finally, giving up her frail grip, the blonde attempts to leap away from the horse and throw herself to safety. Unfortunately, her foot becomes entangled in the stirrup, and she is now at the mercy of the horse's pounding hooves as her head is struck against the ground over and over...

As her head is battered against the ground, she is mere moments away from unconsciousness—when to her great luck, Bobby, the Wal-Mart greeter, sees her and unplugs the horse

Meanwhile, McCain proves he will not surrender...

John McCain
.
While things look less than rosey for Fred Thompson, Sen. McCain is enjoying a nice comeback in these parts. With nearly everybody in and out of politics agreeing that he won last week's debate, McCain is on an upward track once again. As noted in last Friday's Union Leader op-ed page,

McCain spent two days campaigning here before the debate at the University of New Hampshire. Reporters we've talked with say he is his old self again. Freed from the constraints of a national campaign and rejuvenated by direct interaction with New Hampshire voters, he has found renewed vigor and energy.

In addition, McCain is still interacting with those of us here in New Media as well-- not that he had stopped, mind you (his fortunes might have sagged, but you couldn't tell based on his cyber-campaign, which stayed strong and functional). Yesterday, we participated in another "bloggers conference call" with McCain, and can report that he sounded as spirited and upbeat as I've ever heard.

At the onset, he came out swinging, calling on the Democrats, and Hillary Clinton in particular, to repudiate the ad sponsored by the left wing group Moveon.org that ran on the day of Petraeus' Congressional testimony. McCain denounced the ad that accused the General of somehow betraying his country with his testimony, saying it

"Impugns the integrity of a decent American. That is wrong."

Whether you're supporting McCain for the nomination or not, you cannot say he doesn't do right by the men and women of our armed forces. Nobody defends them and their mission more vehemently than he does. He readily admits that his absolute support of the latest Iraq strategy might cost him politically, but feels success in the war trumps everything.

I couldn't agree more. I believe that McCain's present work in support of the war effort are of paramount importance as we try to win the thing. Leadership is what's needed the most at this present moment. One could make a case that, right now, McCain is doing what President Bush seems unable to do-- rousing some enthusiasm and understanding among ordinary people about the importance of finishing the Iraq piece of the war on OUR terms. It might be risky-- staking his entire campaign on staying and finishing the war, but that's what these kinds of elections are all about. Big ideas of national concern.

I will do another post about the call in the next day or so. There were many great questions, and really good answers. The other candidates should look to this man for a demonstration of what total, unfettered access is all about. I will be travelling this afternoon with McCain on his famous bus as he brings the "No Surrender Tour" here to New Hampshire.

I'll be keeping a sharp eye because, as Matt Lewis of Townhall.com asked,

People have noticed you're doing well now.

Do you have your mojo?

McCain says he does. His campaign troubles have mostly been budgetary (and he readily admits because of his illegal immigration stand). He believes
"A precursor to support is attendance at the town hall meetings. Americans are just starting to focus."
Indeed. It appears that McCain gets one more bite at the apple. With Fred Thompson starting to look less attractive to some of his supporters and those who waited to get a close look, one wonders if they'll migrate into the welcoming arms of Senator McCain?

A bad day in NH for Fred Thompson?

Fred Thompson
Fred Thompson in NH (GG file photo)
.
Wow! I got up this morning and, as I do everyday, fetched my Union Leader and began to read. When I got to the editorial page, there was a column by George Will, and another by Robert Novak. To put it mildly, they both paint a rather unflattering picture of Fred Thompson's short tenure as "candidate" Thompson. My sense is that there are a lot of people around the Granite State this morning nodding their heads in agreement. Unless something that's hugely awe-inspiring happens soon, Will's "New Coke" analogy could go down in presidential campaign lore as the symbol of the fastest crash and burn ever turned in by a major political figure.
.
Maybe Fred ought to rethink his thumbs-down to Huckabee for a Lincoln-Douglas debate here in NH--It might be the only chance he's got here in New Hampshire to revive the magic that seemingly existed prior to his entry to the campaign...
.
No matter what unfolds, the 'Grok will continue to track things as they shake out. My personal take is that it's a little early to write him off. All campaigns are a little rough around the edges at the beginning. Unfortunately for Fred Thompson, the means and timing of his joining the fray brought an unprecedented level of scrutiny from day one. Future students of campaigns might want to note this as being one of the cons to waiting out the other, earlier players.
.
For now, Mr. Thompson needs to get out and fill those big shoes that he and his team created...

Not paying a mortgage, but paying the price.

cookshack
As readers of the 'Grok are aware, we have been selected to receive and forward reader questions for candidate Fred Thompson to answer at some point. While we are still awaiting something from the campaign, the questions continue to trickle in. We got an email yesterday that happened to overlap with my prior posting about a possible goverment bailout of failed lenders of shaky mortgages. While addressed to Fred, I thought it was relevant and worthy of wider dissemination. Also, based on the last line in his email, I thought Republicans should be particularly concerned...
My wife and I have been looking for houses for almost 4 years. Watching the housing market almost double over that time, we have for the most part been priced out of the market. We are both professionals holding undergraduate and graduate degrees; we both work and have what most would consider a good income. Although the low ARMs and interest-only products have been tempting, we believed that these options were terrible financial decisions that would ultimately come back to haunt us. Just when our patience is beginning to pay off and the market is about to correct itself, President Bush steps in with an overhaul of FHA policy that will essentially "bail out" those that drove housing prices beyond our means in the first place.
.
The current administration seems to have a "hands off" policy when it comes to energy and healthcare costs, but has a sudden change of heart when it comes to housing costs. In the meantime, my family and many Americans like us are getting absolutely crushed. So my question for Mr. Thompson is this: What are you going to do to help me? Housing is one thing, but energy and healthcare are another. What is your solution?  I have voted Republican every election since 1988 when I became a voter. I've always voted in line with my values and according to moral standards. But the current administration has not only shown a growing disinterest in my story and others like mine, but also seems to have no vision for America. I  want to be inspired. I need to be inspired. For the first time the Dems are looking like a viable option to me.
.
Brian
Gallatin, TN
My first reaction is to caution Brian that while Bush might be talking about a bailout, he can't do it alone-- there'll be Democrats right there with him. While Bush bails the bad lenders, the Dems will be saving the borrowers-- those who should have never gotten loans in the first place. Either way, the taxpayers get screwed. Brian's taxes will go up, and he still won't be able to afford his dream. This is an area that, like Brian, I am interested in hearing what the candidates have to say.
.
I'm not sure if Brian agrees, but there are times when problems must be allowed to get fixed by the free market. The bad mortgage bubble burst is one. Brian's right-- the freewheeling lending practices have contributed to the sharp rise in real estate prices, pushing them beyond what is sustainably practical. A "fix" is needed. What we are seeing is the beginning of a correction that had become overdue. We don't need government interference to bring more artificiality to a sector that has already been "irrationally exuberent" for far too long. (We will be discussing this topic on the radio program Saturday. You can tune in and listen via livestream here)

Tax Payers Against a Wall Street and Mortgage Bailout

.
A new group, "Tax Payers Against a Wall Street and Mortgage Bailout", has started an online petition drive asking Congress NOT to bailout the financially ailing mortgage industry. I am fully supportive of this action. To take MY money to give to unscrupulous (or uncaring, knowing the "fix" would come at the right time) money lenders who made loans to people who weren't qualified in the usual reliable time tested ways is absolutely wrong.
.
I knew a family that, after watching and hearing enough advertisements enticing them into an "easy" home-loan, became convinced the time was right to purchase a home. Never mind that they couldn't qualify for even a car loan at the time-- already unable to make payments on their existing one-- they wanted a house, dammit, and were going to get one. Spend years saving, scrimping, and going without in an effort to fulfill some lifelong dream? Nah. After burning through the local lenders that operated under the older guiding principles ("those mother f**kers won't give me my money!"), they found someone that did the mortgage. In no way should these people, walking, fiscal train wrecks that they were, have been given a single dime.
.
I have no idea what the present circumstance is with these people, having lost touch. I can only assume that they are wrapped up in the current crisis, having received one of the now infamous "no-money down, poor credit loans." Don't I feel bad for them, why with kids and all? Nope. They had no business getting that loan. They weren't just innocent people misled by the evil lenders. They worked HARD to get the loan- shuffling papers. Telling stories. Badmouthing those that denied them. Really. Why should I have to pay? I'm signin' that petition...
To:  Senator Hillary Clinton, Senator Christopher Dodd, Senator Charles Schumer and members of Congress

Please do not support the efforts to bail out mortgage holders and mortgage lenders with my tax dollars. As a responsible citizen, I do not believe it is right for you to ask me to pay for other peoples’ financial excesses, especially since a bailout encourages lenders to continue making predatory loans, with the assumption that taxpayers are on the hook. Further, we believe that the liability of the mortgage mess should NOT be shifted to GSE’s Freddie and Fannie.
.
I appreciate the goal of helping people to have access to housing, but any proposed bailout will only reward lenders and borrowers who acted irresponsibly, and it will punish people who work hard and diligently manage their finances by not buying houses which they cannot afford.
.
The housing market has begun a process of correction. This is necessary in order to keep housing affordable in the long-term. Let the market correct so we can achieve stability again, and people are able to save and afford the house of their dreams over time. That really is the true American Dream.
.
Sincerely,
Doug

If it doesn't fit the narrative, don't fret - smear!

There is no doubt that here at the 'Grok that we both support our troops and we support their mission.  With General Patraeus now telling the results of the surge to Congress, the anti-war and anti-Bush forces are stooping to the usual leftward tactic - smear'em.  Ignore them, contradict them.

Even when they have neither visited Iraq or heard the General's testimony.  For a group that  overwhelmingly voted to let him lead the effort and let the surge begin, they are unable to use the meme of "he lied to us".  What's left is indicative of what MoveOn.org did in the NYT.

Sorry, but this is simple kindergarten mentality showmanship - don't bother me with facts from the guy in charge and whose life has been put on the line in service to his country for decades.  While I know that Generals do have to do politics, the vitriol leveled at him has been absurd.

Yet, I hear that military progress is now being made.  And being made in such a way that the sheiks in Anbar and other places are finally convinced that we have them in their best interest.  Which has made security room for the political process to begin.  The unfortunate thing is that these political baby steps are not being made in the Iraqi Parliament but at the grassroots level.  Frankly, while many a large decision can be made more swiftly at the top IF IT IS MADE, those at the grassroots level (especially in this tribal tradition) may be of longer and more lasting endurance.

This, I ask that you sign this petition from the Victory Caucus imploring our leaders to continue the surge and give the military the time and resources to succeed.

After all, if we surrender, Al Queda will have one.  No, we will not have lost the military war, but another example of how to break the American political will, will take its place in the history books.

Sign the Stand By The Mission Petition!

Moveon.org should move out!

In it's usual disgraceful fashion, the yahoos at moveon.org have slammed General Petraeus with their newspaper advertisement and their website. Since moveon.org are the traitors and have committed treason against the United States of America and not Gen. Petraeus, I believe it's high time these dishonorable folks take up residence outside of the USA since they are the ones who have "betrayed us!" Move out if you hate America so much.

They have absolutely no patriotism, hate our troops and don't deserve to live in the land of the free because of the brave.  BECAUSE of the brave, BECAUSE of the brave...knock, knock, is anybody home?

Join me in emailing and calling for the moveon.org cowards to apologize to Gen. Petreaus and our entire Armed Forces. The General has fought in three wars, dropped his own blood for our country and has a PhD and could no doubt make a ton of money in the private sector. Instead he has dedicated his life to the service of our country. What have moveon.org liberals done for their country except feed their own egos and distorted, sick viewpoints?

Moveon.org is quite obviously dedicated to destroying our country and our freedom. They sound as though they've joined with the enemy to discourage, disparage and obviously support terrorists winning and America losing.

Wake up Americans! If you don't become outraged by these completely unamerican forces of evil, yes, they are evil and bent on destroying the United States of America and continue to encourage our enemies, you might as well convert to radical Islam today and get it over with! The time for apathy and slumber is over! WAKE UP!

The democrats who control NH are already taking away your individual freedoms and dictating to you how you are allowed to live your life in free America. They are now controlling your own minor children and dictating to small businesses who their clientele will be and spent more time on ridiculous balloon legislation then other exceedingly more important matters. Take back our country and take back New Hampshire from these liberal forces of evil disguised as politicians and activists.

I happened to listen to a small portion of the Dennis Miller radio show today. Perhaps you caught some of the code pink wackos being thrown out of Congress while the General was testifying. Mr. Miller related a story about what he saw when he left Walter Reed after a visit with our brave veterans. Some code pink punks were protesting the war outside holding signs saying: "Was it worth it?" These are our soldiers who have given a limb or two or more to protect these disgraceful idiots. This can't be okay with any true American, and we should all be livid about such completely childish and absolutely sick behavior.

Those of you who put your signs "Support the Troops, End the War" are also encouraging terrorists and I'm wondering where your heads went completely off kilter as well. If you really support the troops, then put a "Support the Troops, WIN the war" sign on your lawn. Please stop attacking those who defend this country with their own blood and sometimes their own lives. WAKE UP AMERICA and get behind the mission or join the moveon people and take up residence in some other country. Take back America for true Americans and read some history books about war. WWII didn't go well in the beginning either but at least we're not speaking German now are we?

If we lose this one, count on being blown away or shot if you don't convert and you might as well start learning farsi since that will be the new language in America.

Please sign the petition from Skip's posting. Thank you!

"Fred" Questions - the analysis

Updated and jumped up:

For any one coming back to see any updates - I was hoping to see some video answers out on Fred's site for all of the questions that you folks gave us.  I hate to say, there are none.  When they start to go up, I'll update this post.

In the meantime, while the below line on Fredius Maximus was great, I would be remiss if I didn't (given no video answers yet) put this up from a loyal reader (upon remarking on the same lacking):

Fred Thompson peaked last week. We will witness a slow plummet, like a small plane lazily spiraling to its ultimate demise...

It's early in his campaign so I'm willing to give his staff a break (especially as many of them are probably new to each other).  That said, I'm betting that Fred will lose some of the enthusiastic Fredheads if nothing shows up soon....

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

That was unexpected - just the sheer number of comments and questions sent into the 'Grok as the Fred campaign asked a few blogs to gather questions for the Senator (here).  At 10:28 last nite - 234 comments and about 56 emails.  Altogether, over 50 pages of comments / questions / exhortations.

Being a person that likes to look at things and try to analysis it, I put a few hours into reviewing them all.  Thus, the summarization is here; the broken out stats are after the jump.

Note: I was struck by forcefulness of the questions and how they were put.  Good questions, and to a person, they don't want the usual mamby-pamby answers - they explicitly requested specifics and not the political glittering generalities (more than a few said that if they got the latter, he'd lose their vote AFTER they said they were ready to vote for him).

For the strength of their conviction, I give you this line:

I look forward to speaking of Ronaldus Magnus and Fredius Maximus in the same sentence. - Martin

I hope that Fred realizes that a lot of people are expecting him to fill really big shoes!  A lot of questions (many of them better than what I have heard during the debates) from a lot of earnest people (and a few bomb throwers as well).

Note:  Our friend DCE over at Weekend Pundit also took part in "gather the questions for Fred" and his post is here.  He also relates:

Jon Henke, who asked me, Granite Grok, Instapundit, Captain's Quarters, Right Wing News, and Red State to request these questions from our readers, informed me earlier today that answers to the first questions will probably start rolling out tomorrow as they are taping Fred's responses sometime later today. As soon as they have been uploaded I will post a link to them and any subsequent videos.
