The Birth of Real Change

Newt Gingrich
Newt sets the wheels of change in motion.
(Manchester, NH-- May 2007)
.
Yesterday, Newt Gingrich ended speculation about a run for the presidency, and instead, began a movement that might, in the long run, have a greater, longer lasting effect on all levels of politics. By announcing that he will focus on the American Solutions project and his work at the Center for Health Transformation, Newt Gingrich pulled the rug out from under the cynics that called his effort at creating and connecting local grass-roots activism nothing more than a veiled front for a presidential campaign. If what we experienced yesterday in our local "Solutions Day" project right here in Laconia, NH is any indication of what happened in the hundreds of such events that happened simultaneously throughout the rest of the country, it is entirely possible that Newt will have set the stage for grassroots education and activism that could realize his goal of working to bring about real change to our seemingly broken system of government.
.
American Solutions workshop
American Solutions workshop in Laconia, NH
.
In Laconia, we had 39 people in attendance. While some left as the afternoon went on, having other commitments, many stayed till the end, and then some. Following Newt's closing remarks, the first question asked was,

"When are we doing this again?"

After some 5 hours of viewing roundtable discussions livecast over the Internet and engaging in followup and conversation about each topic, the group was ready for more. It was very uplifting to be among a group of folks that want to become engaged and involved in their government, wishing to play a role in bringing about the fudamental change that we so desperately need at all levels.
.
As a group, we decided to create an ongoing entity that will continue to meet, educate ourselves, and work to bring about change in our towns and cities, state, and at the national level. There is no rule or law that says only politicians have the answers. Why can't ordinary people, each with their own particular skills and ideas, come up with logical, workable solutions to what needs to be fixed?
What Newt accomplished, through the use of technology and the efforts of regular folks scattered throughout the state and country, is seemingly unprecedented. To be able to capture the imaginations and resources of large numbers of people simultaneously working together, and focus that energy against our leviathan systems of government in an organized way, is one way that we might finally begin to change some of the broken facets that have been that way for far too long.
.
As Newt says, we have a world that works-- WalMart, Fedex, and UPS, to name a few examples-- and a world that doesn't- FEMA, the INS, etc. If enough people rise up and demand change, armed with examples and solutions, change will happen. We need enough people to tell each and every one of the over 500,000 elected officials here in America:
If you're not for real change, you shouldn't come back.
Amen! And that goes for ALL politicians- Republican, or Democrat.
.
As an aside, it appears that our group will work both within the confines of American Solutions and beyond. Many people at the Laconia event were really excited at the prospect of helping each other as we look to change here at the most local level. The plan is to network and work together to back each other up as we all look to begin to change the "business as usual" mode that is locked in place in many locales by the "good 'ole boys (and gals)" that seem to control things.
Real change requires real change. It has begun...
.
American Solutions
Ordinary folks in Laconia doing what the politicians won't: solving problems.

Gold Star Mothers Day

National Gold Star Mothers Day Ceremony
Sunday Sept. 30th @ 2:00pm
NH State Veteran's Cemetery, Boscawen, NH
.
Gold Star Banner
.
A note from the Blue Star Mothers of New Hampshire:
.
Please join us as we honor our New Hampshire Gold Star Mothers on Sept. 30th starting at 2:00pm at the NH Veterans Cemetery, Boscawen, NH. Seating will be limited so we are asking that you bring a lawn chair so you may enjoy the ceremony in comfort.
The men and women of America's Armed Forces selflessly serve to protect our Nation, and they are among our greatest heroes. From the trenches of World War I to the beaches of Normandy, from Korea to Vietnam, from Afghanistan to Iraq, many courageous members of our military have given their lives so that Americans could live in freedom and security. On Gold Star Mother's Day, we recognize and pray for the devoted and patriotic mothers of these men and women in uniform who have made the ultimate sacrifice in defense of our liberty.
.
America's Gold Star Mothers carry a great burden of grief, yet they show a tremendous spirit of generosity in helping their fellow citizens. With kindness and understanding, they support members of our Armed Forces and their families, provide vital services to veterans, help to educate young people about good citizenship and our Nation's founding ideals, and bring comfort to many in need. We commend these proud women for their compassion, commitment, and patriotism, and our Nation will always honor them for their sacrifice and service.
.
The Congress, by Senate Joint Resolution 115 of June 23, 1936 (49 Stat. 1895 as amended), has designated the last Sunday in September as "Gold Star Mother's Day" and has authorized and requested the President to issue a proclamation in its observance. On this day, we express our deep gratitude to our Nation's Gold Star Mothers, and we ask God's blessings on them and on their families.

SEIU - Healthcare Smoker?

I'm an SEIU funded / supported Healthcare Smoker Voter!

That's right - I want you to pay for my Universal Healthcare to help me with my increased risk of  chronic diseases that are associated with smoking: cancer, hypertension, COPD, emphysema....

Question for Ray Buckley and Gov. Lynch-- cuz inquirin' minds wanna know!

Democrat Campaign Donor
Dem campaign donor...
.
Regarding the illegal political donations to Gov. Lynch and the NH Democratic Party, I have but one question:

Have you guys returned the money yet?

Just wondering...

A union hack, apparently taking the "high road,", decries American corporations and their "unmitigated exploitation" of workers. What, did they want them to actually work?

union workers
California union members assaulting Arnold supporter in 2005
.
When it comes to pointing fingers at who's to blame for the continuing exodus of manufacturing jobs to China and other such places, I have long believed that the hardcore union types should look in the mirror for a glimpse of at least one of the many culprits. After years of mind-numbingly high salaries and benefits (for what one must admit were, in some cases, mundane tasks) far beyond what might otherwise have been deemed reasonable, you can't really blame big companies for looking elsewhere for labor when given the opportunity.
.
Consider this story about an 1854 strike action by the forerunners to my "favorite" local batch of unionized employees, the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard workers as recounted by Ray Brighton. You'll note the forward thinking warning about pushing employers over the brink:
The Portsmouth Journal noted that... the cost of the three-week strike was estimated at $15,000. The money came out of the pockets of the workers, and the newspaper moralized that such aggressive action by workers tended only to harm the workers themselves. Had the Secretary of the Navy not been forgiving and restored the original wages, the paper noted, workers who were unhappy with the wage cut could certainly move on and find work elsewhere. A major strike by workers, the newspaper warned, might cause the employer to pack up and go to a distance place where the workforce was more cooperative.
Now don't get me wrong, I think that employees can and should be valued assets to any business or organization. I believe that workers should be paid fairly and treated with dignity and respect. If an employer violates the laws, I want them appropriately dealt with. I think there is a balance that can be reached that is equitable to all in the business world-- all of which is ultimately driven by market forces. It's how things work in America. But, might it be that some manufacturers, having had enough of the heavy handed tactics of labor unions, gave up and moved to better situations?
.
Tuesday, I had the pleasure of attending the "Keep it Made in America" town hall style meeting in Manchester hosted by John Ratzenberger. While I agreed with much of the sentiment, and generally try to buy American whenever possible, I did note an element of unionism woven throughout the entire evening. Recognizing the fragile makeup of the Alliance for American Manufacturing that I much admire-- management and unions working together in common cause-- I overlooked most of the standard union anti-corporate references peppering the evening's discussion... Except for the end-of the event tirade we heard from panelist, Gail Kinney.
.
According to the event press kit, Ms. Kinney is a "Consultant to workers and labor organizations on high-road economic strategies" from Canaan, NH. She went on a rant that made me, as an employer and former corporate employee, uncomfortable, to say the least. Her blanket claims of employee abuse bordered on ridiculous-- something that on balance with the rest of the evening, we all could have done without. Check it out:
.
[FYI--The definition of "hack", from Merriam Webster's Online Dictionary: 3 a : a person who works solely for mercenary reasons : HIRELING <party hacks>]

Moral/Immoral: Who Decides?

I admire Gen. Pace for refusing to apologize for his own personal opinions, and here, regarding what he considers immoral behavior.

The top dems try to please all of the people all of the time and apparently have no morals, adultery's okay, civil unions are okay, etc., etc. and basically think just about everything and anything is okay.

When people have no moral boundaries, we have some of the situations like we have now in America. An everything and anything's okay lifestyle will lead to destruction for sure. Even the Bible states that while everything's permissible, not everything is beneficial.

I'd rather have a Gen. Pace type as President than any liberal, left-wing, anything's okay democrat. The truth is that Gen. Pace is entitled to his opinion and just because someone disagrees with homosexuality because of religious or any other reason, they shouldn't be condemned for it or apologize. At least Gen. Pace knows what he believes and is willing to stick by his beliefs. The wishy, washy liberals are swayed to and fro by the wind of whatever's currently popular; e.g., Al Gore and his alarmist global warming scare tactics that are very one-sided and don't take into account naturally occuring climatic changes. It's the False Evidence Appearing Real (FEAR) tactics being used to attempt to silence truth under a banner of the political correctness man who thinks he's some kind of god.

I wish more Americans were convicted and steadfast in their beliefs and had higher morals rather than ever-changing "values."

It continues - debate request issued on healthcare with the "I'm a Healthcare Voter" folks

Update and bumped (third time)

SEIU

NH for Healthcare - the I am a Healthcare Voter folks

We're non-partisan!
 What a crock!

Non-Partisan?  HAH!  They say that they wish to promote a dialog and debate about healthcare locally.  Not in my opinion! These folks are going around to all the political events merely to harvest names, addresses, and emails.  They are not being upfront with folks - after talking with a number of them, one learns that they have been well trained to NOT speak of Universal Healthcare.

One of life's rules for success in life is being persistent - I'm not letting go of this issue, as I believe that this is one of the signature issues of the campaign. And I hate being lied to or spun.  So guess what my emotions were when I ran across this story.

A politically potent union has decided not to take sides in the Democratic presidential battle, at least for now, even though many of its leaders support John Edwards’s presidential bid.
The board of the union, the Service Employees International Union, met in Chicago on Monday, and decided not to endorse Mr. Edwards or any of the other Democrats.
One board member said that a majority of board members favored Mr. Edwards, who has been outspoken on behalf of universal health coverage, one of the S.E.I.U.’s main goals. But those members, taken together, do not come from locals representing 60 percent of the union’s membership, the threshold required for the board to make an endorsement.

Deceiving people is not nice.  And I'll add the DividedWeFall folks in this too, as SEIU is behind them as well. Just talk?  Just debate?  What a smokescreen!  If that is so true, accept the debate challenge - let's see who would win in the public square!

If they were so non-partisan, how come I see no mention of Republican candidates?  Oh yeah, the Repubs, especially Rudy, want want to empower individuals and allow them to be more independant of government policies and market distortions.  On the other hand, the SEIU wants people to be taken care, to extend that Nanny State, to be more dependant on government.

I had issued a challenge followed by a supposition for the SEIU / NH For Healthcare folks.  Then in an email discussion, I offered Zandra Rice Hawkins, their Communications Director, a blog debate followed by a radio debate back on 9/18 not truly knowing the above.  While she did respond, she avoided answering about engaging in debate.  Since 9/19, all I've heard has been  cricket sounds.  I'll post the email thread later and after the jump so you can see for yourself.

I have no doubt now that I'll win the challenge - there is no defense on their side now that the cat is out of the bag.  Did others know this before me?  Probably, but I'll just add my voice.

When it is all said and done, this is NOT about healthcare.

Rather, this is how we see ourselves and government.  Is it the case that we still believe in individualism (the philosophy that made this country great) or are we deciding that government knows best for us?  Do we embrace self-responsibility or giving up that up and have others take care of us?  Do we stay with a more capitalistic form of living or a more socialistic form as in Europe (with its lower standard of living and government rationing healthcare)?

Note: I am not debasing the safety net for those that truly need it.  I am against that line of assistance continuously creeping upward to those that do not need and then becoming dependant on that when not needed.  Help those that truly need it - and that ain't all of us.

Sadly, it is also a story of advocacy groups not being up front
being honest
and truthful.

Welcome to hardball politics, Skip.

Original Post

 I am a Healthcare Voter

At almost any political rally lately, someone dressed like this woman will come towards you and say "Are you in favor of quality, affordable health insurance for every American?  Oh good - would you be willing to sign this petition?"

If I were her, why wouldn't I want someone else pay for my freedom to eat what I like, exercise as infrequently as I wish (and for some; smoke, drink, and engage in risky behaviors)?  Impending, self-imposed chronic disease - no problem!

After all, we're all in this together, right?

Advocacy brought to you by the SEIU (Psst - look at the sleeve and ask what that is: Service Employee International Union)

Subject:     Re: Health Care conversation

From:        Skip Murphy
To:           Zandra Rice

Hi!

And thanks for replying!

Thank you for the invitation to blog with you about health care issues. As one can see from this blog already, health care is an issue about which we all have strong opinions.

And that's why we have to discuss it....so are you accepting my offer to a cross-blog debate?  And then come onto the radio show (this week is booked, but I'd set aside a considerable amount of time next week)!

Our group has been talking to people across New Hampshire about their health care experiences. Everyone has a different take on it, but the overall consensus is that, right now, our health care system is broken. For months, health care activists have been urging all the presidential candidates- Democrats and Republicans – to release plans for comprehensive health care reform. If you look at the most recent debate transcript, you'll note that one challenge is to get all of the candidates to even detail their plans for health care.

It happening, and as I posted recently (http://granitegrok.com/blog/2007/09/the_differences_could_not_be_starker.html), this will be one of the three defining topics of the race (the other two being fighting Islamofascism and illegal immigration).

I encourage you and each of your readers to listen for health care conversation from candidates over the course of the next couple of weeks. I'm sure you know who is talking about health care already, but it might surprise you more to hear who is not. Since nearly 47 million Americans do not have health care coverage, presidential candidates should be talking health care early and often regardless of their position on how to improve it. To that end, right now we want the focus to be on candidates and policies. We could have our debate through the blog, but our emphasis should be on having the candidates compare and analyze one another's plans. At this time, we are going to keep our attention there. We appreciate you bringing health care to the attention of your readers, though, and are eager to see more in this regard.

The 47 million number I have already debunked (ok, just blogged - someone else has done the number crunching and I can source the result from several other sources as well).  My son is one of them.  In his early twenties, he doesn't want to pay for it even though he can afford it.  Illegals make up a huge portion.  So do others that can afford it but choose not to.

So this is not much more than a canard to pull at heart strings.  Good policy should never be built solely on emotional arguments.

In the meantime, one note on the tone of the dialogue thus far – while we have come to amicable terms,

Me too!

I'm disappointed that both the original posting and response violated the principles of GraniteGrok.

Really?  I was not aware that I broke my own rules.....

One of our organizers made a grave mistake in his comments.

We all make mistakes - no problem!  That's why I took down the email.  Action, consequence, repentance, forgiveness - works for me!

He was truly upset that an activist had been put in a negative spotlight while advocating for an issue that they passionately believe in. Not everyone is willing to pro-actively work for the issues they care about, and dialogue about the issue should not directly attack the everyday New Hampshire residents involved – which includes posting photos intended to ridicule that person, even if the face has been blocked out.

And that is where he was wrong, and I believe you are as well.  I could have gone over any time during the event, introduced myself, gotten her name, chatted with her, and then REALLY go to town and ridiculed her.  THAT is not my style.

I presented no information that could identify her personally.  I took the effort to blank out the face.  I used no name.  My prose was done to show an example of why people may be advocating for "free" universal healthcare with no responsibility on their part...why not - it's FREE!  And as we all know, TANSTAAFL - There Ain't No Such Thing As A Free Lunch.  My point was from a layman's perspective - "here, those of you who have earned more success in life, just take care of me" - and my ire over that philosophy (and trust me, I and my family have had to use the "safety net" in the past - my problem is that this net is being extended to handle what should be done by self-responsible adults).  This is not a personal vendetta standpoint.

Let's be clear - decisions have consequences.  She chose to identify with your movement.  She willingly put herself out into the public square in agreeing to advocate for healthcare.  In wearing a T-Shirt emblazoned with your message, your union name (SEIU - which, by the way, not exactly what I would consider a non-partisan group.  For example, how many liberal candidates or issues  has the SEIU backed in vs conservative ones? ), both you and she put your union out into the public domain.  Once the latter has been done, and I have done that to myself with GraniteGrok, GilfordGrok, and Meet The New Press, privacy is given up.  You get what you get.

Our organizer has made his apologies,

And accepted because I believe it was truly meant.

and we are continuing our serious conversation about appropriate response.

Er, not clear on this point on what you mean.

On your end, we'd appreciate you removing the photo, and adhering to your own rules of engagement, "Attacking people – banned. Go for the throat of the argument, not the person."

Again, while you feel I was attacking the person, I was not.  If I had wanted to, I would have provided a lot more personal information as I mentioned above.  I didn't.  Frankly, the picture serves as a good metaphor for the on-going Nanny-statism that we seem to be sliding towards - regular readers of the 'Grok know and understand this is a big issue with me - the continual infantilzation of society.

Thank you, and again, we can only compare presidential health care plans that have been released – so ask each presidential candidate to tell us what they will do to fix the health care crisis, and we'll really have something to talk about!

They already are, and with little prodding from me.  However, I see that you are trying to slide our discussion to be only that what is going on between the candidates - that would only be part of the discussion as we ALL have to take sides and solutions..  My challenge was to you folks directly - is this email an indication that it has been accepted?  I've got the sandpaper ready!!!

Let's keep the dialog up and going....in fact, this email thread could be a good start!

Kindest Regards,

-Skip

Update and bumped (again) and retitled from "Perhaps they should rethink who their volunteers should be?":

The email that precipitated the update (confusing Doug for me) has been taken down - the jist was that the "I am a Healthcare" folks are non-partisan, they were not pleased with the post, and wanted an apology (which I obviously refused to do).

Well, a couple more emails - one an apology from them.  I have thus taken down the email and have offered them a blog debate on the issue culminating in a radio / live stream debate on our radio show Meet The New Press.

Thwack - ball's in your court!  Shall we have a reasoned debate?  I await your answer...

--------------------------------

Update and bumped:  Get it straight, I wrote it; not Doug.  And no, I'm not until Andrew Sylvia meets my challenge and proves my supposition wrong. If he does, I'll eat his choice of sandpaper grit with my challenge and suppostion printed on it!  Of course (smiling here), if he can't, he'll have to do the same!

Challenge:  I bet that when the SEIU, "I am a Healthcare Voter", DividedWeFall, and AARP finally "analyze" their petition and the folks that signed it, they will conclude that the only answer will be one that will contain an even more government controlled or mandated or taxable "solution".

Supposition:  Non-partisan? My eye! SEIU is a union, a big one.  I have only seen unions have their members pay more for healthcare when negotiations have been "lost" in this area. AARP, their big ally in this field, has been known to lobby hard for not changing SS benefits, even in the face of damaging demographic change - the "it's owed to me" mentality.  It is rather doubtful that they will support free-market solutions to the current government inspired, over-worked, and distorted healthcare payment plan that masquerades as health insurance.

Note: I have talked to a number of these folks....they are well trained not to give answers as to possible solutions that may be offered.

Again - prove me wrong and I'll apologize.  But not until.

-------------------------------------------------------------

Remember, once the government has taken over, things like this story from the UK will happen.  Not if, when.  Again, healthcare has to be rationed one way or another as there will always be more of a demand for it than the supply of it can cover.

A man with a broken ankle is facing a lifetime of pain because a Health Service hospital has refused to treat him unless he gives up smoking.

John Nuttall, 57, needs surgery to set the ankle which he broke in three places two years ago because it did not mend naturally with a plaster cast.

Doctors at the Royal Cornwall Hospital in Truro have refused to operate because they say his heavy smoking would reduce the chance of healing, and there is a risk of complications which could lead to amputation.

They have told him they will treat him only if he gives up smoking. But the former builder has been unable to break his habit and is now resigned to coping with the injury as he cannot afford private treatment.

However, the hospital told Mr Nuttall, who no longer works because of smoking-related chest problems, that he would have to give up smoking before an operation could be carried out.

[snip]

"I have paid my dues as a taxpayer-and now the NHS won't treat me."

Mr Nuttall, who is single, uses a walking stick to get around and fears his bones will now be so 'calcified' that an operation would not work even if he were allowed to have it.

"It is very painful," he said. "If I walk more than a few steps I can feel it grinding."

A spokesman for the hospital trust said: "Smoking has a very big influence on the outcome of this type of surgery, and the healing process would be hindered significantly."

Once can decide to ration it via governmental policies, like those of Britain as we see here, or we can move to a more free capitalistic system that will better regulate supply and demand.

John Edwards wants to force you to go to a doctor.  The plan laid out by Hillary when she was First Lady would have told you where you could go and who you could see (and told doctors what they could study, what type of medical practice to have, and where).

Do you want either of these folks determining healthcare for you and your family?  I'd rather go with Rudy's plan - "I" get to decide!

Is Anything Off Limits?

I doubt that it's just Catholics who are outraged by this story!

Those of you who still think the civil union/gay marriage agenda is not a slippery slope issue may need to re-think what's going on in our culture!

Is America better today or was it better before when public schools still taught Godly principals and the Ten Commandments were the foundation of school and life?

I didn't go to school worrying about being shot that's for sure.

Worse yet is this piece and the completely inappropriate teaching to attempt to indoctrinate vulnerable second graders. Come on, people, when are you going to wake up and take back even your own children and what they're being exposed to in public school?

A conversation with John Ratzenberger

John Ratzenberger
.
Following Tuesday's "Keep it Made in America" town hall style meeting here in NH, I had an opportunity to spend a few minutes with John Ratzenberger. We discussed the value of children doing things with their hands, playing outside away from the computers and videos, getting up early, and nurturing a "work ethic." We also talked about China's ongoing threat to American manufacturing and the importance of American manufacturers keeping their supply chains of goods coming from US sources.
.
Mr. Ratzenberger is a genuine guy that promotes a set of classic American values harkening back to years gone by. It is nice to see a Hollywood performer offering a viewpoint in this vein, as opposed to the typical dreck offered up by the usual cast of characters...

Dem Debate tonite

After the war against Islamofascists (the 'Grok's number one issue) comes illegal immigration (easily our number two issue).  If you are a regular reader of the 'Grok, you know this already.

Question asked:

Would you support Sanctuary Cities breaking the Federal Law: yes or no?

Their answer:

All of them tried to spin (big surprise).  Effectively, except for Biden, they all answered yes, that they would support that notion.  Gravel went the furthest by saying he would open to border to ANYone that wanted to come here.

Quick observation:

The President swears to uphold the Constitution and all laws.  Here is a group of people that have just declared, going in, that they will assist other elected officials to break the law.

Think about this.  I am against illegal immigration; you may be for it.  That is not the issue.

What has happened to our society that those who wish to lead us are willing to sanctify the emotional appeal, giving in to "feel good" emotions, over one of the basic premises of this country - the Rule of Law.  Children make major decisions based on emotions - adults think.

Don't like the law?  Change it.  But to willfully ignore and disobey it being the Law Enforcement in Chief? After swearing to uphold the nation's laws?

Only one adult in the bunch.

They are going on to same-sex marriage, rights, and teaching about it in elementary school. My only thought is what I've said before and I will say it again - this Presidential election will be a stark contrast in values.  Left vs Right.

Kyoto results - just hot air?

The Kyoto Protocol (brought up by Clinton, signed by Gore, and voted down by the Senate by a 95-0  vote) was supposed to be a first step in reducing greenhouse gases.  Have those countries that signed Kyoto actually  lived up to their  obligations?  NRO has a story on this topic.

Promise:     5% below 1990 levels.
Result:      27% increase.

Question:  would it have succeeded (if we only had tried harder!!)?
Answer:      A reduction of
0.14°F over 50 years.

Cost:         Trillions spent for not much benefit.
Opinion:     Feel good hot air about hot air.

I liked this:

In climate change, apparently nothing succeeds like failure.

And now they want to try this again?  Hah!

Underdog? Maybe not for long

WMUR

Living here in NH, we basically have one over-the-air station that can be seen all over the state (hee-hee; without cable, I couldn't see it at all!).  Anywho, look what's being reported at WMUR as far as the Repub Prez race is concerned:

The Republican race for president has tightened up with three candidates now toward the top in New Hampshire, according to a new poll.

The latest WMUR/CNN New Hampshire Primary Poll shows that among likely Republican voters, Mitt Romney has dropped to 23 percent support, down from 33 percent in July. Rudy Giuliani is right behind at 22 percent, up from 18 percent.

Sen. John McCain was third at 17 percent, surging up from 12 percent in July. That represents a rebound for the early leader in the race, and with a margin of error of 5.4 percent, McCain has pulled back to striking distance.

The poll was conducted by the University of New Hampshire Survey Center, which interviewed 324 likely Republican primary voters.

I like things more simple - how's this table instead of all that verbiage:

Candidate    Now    Was    Change

Mitt              23      33        -10
Rudy             22      18         +4
McCain          17     12         +5

The surprising news is McCain's uptick.

Now, before you all want us to fall on our swords keyboards for being biased, remember - we've not declared for anyone.  We admit that we have spent a lot of time at the 'Grok covering Rudy and McCain than others.  The reason is simple - they have come here locally the most  and not during working hours.  And (to be frank), McCain asked us on his bus too!

That said, we have some kind of problem with everyone in the race.  But I was very surprised that McCain seems to be coming back from the dead - at least as far as polling results is concerned.  He turned off a LOT of folks during the immigration bill and the polls showed that in the shellacking he took.  That said, his No Surrender Tour and his new emphasis on defeating the Islamofascists (The 'Grok's Number One Issue) appears to be resonating with NH voters.  As I have said before, he OWNS this topic and this issue.  He finally has returned to his roots and it seems to be paying off for him.

So - what's with Mitt?

Mitt Romney

'Grok File Photo

I know that there is quite a bit of time left in the primary race here in NH (umm, maybe not if other states keep jockeying for position if this was the Kentucky Derby), but a 10% drop ain't good news.  This is especially true if one believes that Mitt is a "home boy" as he was the Governor next door in MA (ok, maybe it doesn't help) and has a home in Wolfeboro, NH.

I have no clue why so big of a drop...and Rudy and McCain have benefited from it.

Another tidbit from the reporting:

...66 percent are still trying to decide. Romney leads among conservatives and independents, Giuliani leads among moderates and McCain is pulling evenly from all three.

We pay a lot of attention to the race here in NH - a lot of us (including us Groksters) just don't declare all that early (heh - curmudgeonly Yankees!) to strangers.

Is it possible to heal homosexuality?

In Iran homosexuals are put to death...here's the latest from Fox News...I'm sure we can all agree, no matter what side of the issue we're on, that we all condemn the death penalty just because someone is a practicing homosexual.

If you've read any of my posts from the past, you know that I am opposed to civil unions and gay marriage for a multitude of reasons. But there's a significant difference between being opposed to  CUs for homosexuals and believing someone should be put to death.

This leads to exploring a new study about whether or not homosexuals can be healed and become heterosexuals.

Here’s the recent research on the possibility of changing sexual orientation.

Okay, yeah, I already know that the chimps won’t like it, and more than likely I’ll be called more bad and creative names. That’s okay.

However, since my husband and I spent many years in ministry counseling homosexuals, I can personally attest to the fact that they can be “healed” of homosexuality. As in any other complex issue people deal with; e.g., sexual abuse, alcoholism, pedophilia, etc., because God created us with free will, a person must first be willing to change.

We are a three-part being: spirit, soul (where our will, intellect and emotions live) and body. If the spiritual part of a person isn’t included in the healing, there will be no success in the healing of homosexuals. That’s why some do not become healed because they go to a secular psychiatrist or psychologist who has no knowledge about the spiritual being and therefore, really have no clue how to heal…they only know how to intellectualize, study books and follow various methods by other intellectuals, and only succeed in perhaps helping people cope better…but that’s it.

It always breaks my heart, when I hear a homosexual say: Well, I tried to become a heterosexual but it didn’t work. I always wonder who they went to for help. It wasn’t God because He promises that if you will seek Him, you will find Him. A Godly man who has been gifted by God in this particular area of counselling, can facilitate the way to healing, and God can and does heal. Willingness to change greatly affects success.

So, while some do not care to be healed from homosexuality and that’s certainly their right, that does not mean that healing is not available.

Statistically, most Psychiatrists do not believe in God. The majority in the scientific community don’t believe in God. How on earth would they understand how healing by God takes place if they don’t even believe in Him themselves?

The American Psychological Association is made up of mostly people who do not believe in God, so most don’t understand the things of God either. And, yes, I agree that the debate about homosexuality has too often been driven by political rather than scientific considerations.

And it's been greatly skewed by men/women who are scientists and puffed up in their own knowledge. Godly knowledge is something completely different.

I hardily agree with Mr. Chambers, an ex-homosexual, that “this body of research is critical in advancing the national dialogue on this issue.”

Mr. Besen’s comment “you can pray away the gay” is childish and only supports that he has absolutely no personal understanding of God and how God heals. Most healings by God take some effort by the individual and a free-will choice to pursue healing…few healings are miraculous happening instantaneously.

Scientists who are pro-homosexuality or homosexuals themselves, of course, are heard more often and certainly have their own biases.

Many of the homosexual and sexual abuse survivors we counseled required years of counseling before God healed their total being and they moved on in a healthier way with their life.

Being completely honest here, many Psychiatrists and Psychologists aren’t all that interested in getting someone so much better that they no longer require their services. Let's face it, they’re in a business to make money. God’s in the business of healing willing people and then setting them free. Counselors who answer to God generally freely give, because they have been given to freely.

Part of the healing process is how closely God will draw you to Him and relate and love you unconditionally…if you’re willing. He is not in the business of shaming anyone although internal shame issues many times are illuminated...but not to hurt although it may, but to set a person free. If you’ve never experienced it, it's unexplainable to a finite mind. But, if you have gone through a healing process with God, no one will be able to convince you that God doesn’t heal.

I’m very interested in reading the book when it comes out in October. Partly since they quoted C. S. Lewis, who said that science produced by Christian persons would have to be perfectly honest. I agree that honesty is tantamount. I’m really curious to read about their approach and how they counseled these homosexuals to see if it correlates with my own experience.

Hopefully, there will be a national dialogue as the issue needs to have light shed on it rather than keeping it in the darkness which only hinders finding the truth.

I have a question for the Left: how do these increase Freedom?

During the brouhaha over the "domestic wiretaps" and "secret spying", I often heard:

Those who would give up Essential Liberty to purchase a little Temporary Safety,
deserve neither Liberty nor Safety".   -Benjamin Franklin

Those on the Left wailed that the Bush Administration was the harbinger of fascism, that the Constitution was being rent asunder by an intrusive government.  Yet, the target audience for these wiretaps were terrorists on foreign soil. So, where's the hue and cry as another President (thankfully, still a wannabe) is issuing utterances that would go FAR beyond what the wiretaps do and affect all US citizens.  And the effect is not just materially, not just financial, but in that most intangible (yet most important) right of all - freedom.

Pray tell, how would these statements, if enacted, increase my sense of freedom, for I only see decreases?

  • "We are going to take things away from you on behalf of the common good."
  • "We can't just let business as usual go on, and that means something has to be taken away from some people."
  • "We have to build a political consensus and that requires people to give up a little bit of their own turf in order to create this common ground."
  • "I certainly think the free market has failed."
  • "I think it's time to send a clear message to what has become the most profitable sector in the entire economy, that they are being watched."
  • "What I want to do is take those profits and apply them to alternative energy."
  • "It's time for a new beginning, for an end to government of the few, by the few, for the few, and to replace it with shared responsibility for shared prosperity.

The candidate is effectively espousing socialistic, nay, communistic principles here that would make Marx and Lenin proud.   That candidate is Hillary Clinton.  She is espousing the right of government to TAKE from citizens as if it is the government's absolute right to do so.  She will abrogate one of our country's most basic rights - the right of private property.  She is all about dismantling our capitalistic system in the vein of "we know better than you; government is better than the private sector".

Worst of all...

...is the shift from a government of and for individuals to one where my prosperity is solely a function of other people.

Hillary Clinton

Freedom vs socialism.

Your pick.

An open letter to NH Republicans

To: NH Republicans
From: Skip
Subject: Gas tax proposed by a Republican

Yes, I know that Doug has already blogged about the DOT here and here, taking Governor Lynch to task for the problem.

I had a long email string with a member of the GOP leadership team last week about empowering the local Chairs and Republican messages as we try to restart things locally.  But my gosh, how can I, with a straight face, tell people that we are for less taxes with this?

This does not "empower" us!

Enter Rep. Fred King (R-Colebrook), who has filed a bill to raise the tax by 6 cents a gallon. The increase would raise an estimated $50 million for maintenance of the other 4,800 miles of roads not dotted with toll booths.

O'Leary said that unless the Highway Fund sees an infusion of new revenue, his department will have to cut one in four jobs starting in 2009.

Gov. John Lynch, who said the need is urgent on the turnpikes, doesn't want to talk about gas taxes. So Democrats who control the Legislature won't cross Lynch by bringing in a bill.

King said he checked with Bouchard first and found no one would touch the issue.

"Nobody had the guts to do it, so I'm doing it," King said.

He said he wants the extra money to go toward maintenance and repairs, not new projects.
Shades of Minnesota, where PowerLine and Captain's Quarters easily showed that their state chose to spend their transportation monies on lots of stuff - just not the right stuff (like bridge that fell down).  The word is "squander", or mismanagement, isn't it?  Yet, the MN Dems promptly cried out for more taxes (and not demanding the tough thing and logically assess where priorities had gone awry and fix it).   Is money, more and more of it, always the answer?

This cry for more taxes by a Republican just makes my job HARDER in attracting people to the Party - the Party that espouses lower taxes.  And we JUST had the NH media show that lots of other departments and programs raiding money away from that Highway fund!!!  Who has the guts to stand up and say - leave that money alone and let's manage the budget correctly?  If the money isn't there, then cut back to the basics?  Do we have someone with the guts to say and push that?   Where is the Leadership on this (go here if you want to sign a petition protesting the tax) and willing to not just protest the tax but offer the tough solutions?

What's the official Republican line on solutions?

Wouldn't it send a great message to  families all over the state that the Republicans are trying to treat the State budget like they have to treat their family budget?  Instead of excerbating a 17% Democratic increase, just "suck it up" (intestinal fortitude, not the money in our wallets) and cut back to bare minimums?  Sound looney? Sound wacky? Sound unrealistic? Sound politically undoable?  Ask families what happens when they overspend - consequences have actions.

Arrgghh!

Look...

...I know that leadership have decided not to "reign in" / admonish / toss overboard / hold accountable those Republicans that act like Democrats and not adhere to the platform.  But you know, if you did, it might make it easier for us at the local level if you did....because then we could prove that Republicans actually stand for something and are willing to enforce it.

I may be sounding like a loon, a loose cannon, or a naysayer (so be it), but the guys at the top have got to start helping us at t
