« See, try it and it works! | Main | Maturity - short supply in our "young adults"? »

Until the "experts" clued him in, he had no idea!

While I remain uncommitted to any presidential candidate at this point, I believe it's time to begin to take harder, more critical looks at them as the primary inches ever closer. As a conservative Republican, I absolutely want the best person we can get-- one that has the greatest chance at keeping a Democrat from winning the White House in '08.
.
This YouTube shows Mitt Romney fielding the abortion question at two separate events here in NH. My concern is not really over the fact that his position has "evolved," but rather HOW he explains it happened. Perhaps it's just me, but his explanation just makes me uncomfortable. How could a man of his stature be so apparently clueless about something he explains in such simple fashion. It took "experts" to convince him that a sperm and an egg, combined, create human life? What's next-- will Mitt discover there's oil AND vinegar in Italian dressing?
.
.
I continue to fear the Democrats would have a field day with Mitt Romney in the general campaign. Why am I wrong?

You're not wrong. But really, how much does that matter? Is there a candidate in the Republican field with whom the Dems won't have a field day during the general campaign? For that matter, is there a candidate in the Dem field with whom the Repubs won't have a field day during the general campaign?

Anyway, the video is edited and captioned to give an entirely unfair and one-sided view of Romney's position. First of all, the argument over "when life begins" is an integral part of the abortion debate, and different people have different answers because they define "life" differently. Does life begin at conception, or does life begin at the age of viability? It's an esoteric philosophical question that very few people ever actually think about. For most people, abortion is an ideological question, not a scientific one. I'd say Romney attempting to get some sort of scientific opinion on "when life begins" is a point in his favor, because it means he isn't depending just on ideology to decide. He's looking at the facts.

Second, the captioning flatly lies about the second segment, from Londonderry. The caption skewers Romney for turning "sperm cell" into "skin cell." But Romney wasn't talking about normal reproduction in that segment. He was talking about cloning, in which DNA is taken from a body cell, such as a skin cell, and introduced into an egg that has been emptied of its own DNA. That's a process which few non-biologists can understand, so (again) it's admirable that Romney went and found some experts to give him the straight dope, then took that information and worked it into his worldview.

In short, the video is a slick piece of propaganda by a demonstrable liar, who twists and perverts Romney's words about a subject that Romney clearly understands better than the videomaker does, all in hopes of making Romney seem a less-viable candidate to folks like you.

Dad was merely brainwashed. Mitt has been steam-cleaned.

I have a different question? Why have you not commented on Larry Craig's hypocrisy? Another in a long line of Conservative Republicans who turn out to be hypocrites.
Yes but you forget that many of the democrats have, shall we say, a nuanced approach to various issues also. ;) Mitt is slick. He was slick when he ran to run the people's republic. It worked there, whether it'll work nationally remains to be seen.
Mrs. B - Umm, time? Simply put - if this is true, he should resign. Period. I wish all political parties would enforce this - if one messes up like this, purge'em.
If Mitt Romney becomes the Republican Presidential nominee, he will have done so despite this website, eyeon08.com, Politico's Jonathon Martin, and Ryan Sager criticizing his every move, which leads me to believe that he will do the same thing to the mainstream media in the general election. That's why your wrong.
