Normally, if Doug posts something on a topic, I won’t, and likewise. THIS however, I take personally:
“You know, education, if you make the most of it, if you study hard and you do your homework, and you make an effort to be smart, uh, you, you can do well. If you don’t, you get stuck in Iraq.” — John Kerry
Talk about insulting the people that could help or hurt you! During his last campaign, he girded himself up with vets surrounding him, and who will ever forget the "Reporting for duty" line he invoked during the Democratic convention.
I have never served, but I take umbrage at his utterance – my son served in the Marines and was stationed at Al Asad airbase with the Banshees (Prowler squadron).
One doesn’t "make an effort to be smart" – you are, or you are not. It is what you do with that talent, or the deep will to overcome a lack in that department, that will determine your fate (to a large degree). To basically call MY SON, whose IQ is much higher than mine (and I hold 2 degrees – I consider myself trainable vs being smart) is an outrage!
Swift Boats? Kerry is NOT going to have to worry about them – it is all the other folks, active and retired, that are going to have heartache (or more) over this. I think that if he runs, THIS is going to be the stuff that will hound him.
I don’t agree with Senator McCain often – very few times to be honest. But on THIS ONE ISSUE, I’m his:
“Senator Kerry owes an apology to the many thousands of Americans serving in Iraq, who answered their country’s call because they are patriots and not because of any deficiencies in their education. Americans from all backgrounds, well off and less fortunate, with high school diplomas and graduate degrees, take seriously their duty to our country, and risk their lives today to defend the rest of us in Iraq, Afghanistan, and elsewhere. They all deserve our respect and deepest gratitude for their service. The suggestion that only the least educated Americans would agree to serve in the military and fight in Iraq, is an insult to every soldier serving in combat, and should deeply offend any American with an ounce of appreciation for what they suffer and risk so that the rest of us can sleep more comfortably at night. Without them, we wouldn’t live in a country where people securely possess all their God-given rights, including the right to express insensitive, ill-considered and uninformed remarks.”

Frankly, there are many stories of our enlisted, NCO, and officer corps that do not have one degree, but many (yes, NCOs and below with the title Dr. [Ph.D.] exist). A bunch of folks that not only are better educated than Kerry, but well spoken, more erudite, and tons more Patriotic (with a capital P!),
And much less pretensions of grandeur and sense of self-importance too!
Hey, Live Shot! When you are FINALLY going to release your military records – we’re still waiting!!!
Full Disclosure – Doug and I do a radio show with Pat every Sat from 2-4pm EST on WEMJ 1490. Podcasting soon – live streaming when we can get the station to implement it.
