Good Question... - Granite Grok

Good Question…

One of my employees posed an interesting question this morning… Living in a touristy area like we do here in the Lakes Region of New Hampshire, we have lots of service jobs- restaurants, hotels, etc. Many of the local businesses need to augment their workforce during the summer season. For whatever reason, they can’t find enough people to fill the jobs locally, so many employers turn to temporary foreign help. Such is the case at the local Dunkin Donuts, where we have teenage Bosnians and other Eastern Europeans working the counter. Aside from the fact that they are very good workers that appear neat and always busy, they speak very passable English. My employee’s question was
"How come those people come from ‘way over there’ and they speak pretty good English while the Hispanics that live right next door to America- some living here for years- can’t speak hardly a word?"
That’s a very good question. If you can help enlighten me and my workers on this matter, click the "comment" button to post your thoughts. (Hat tip to Scott the team leader here at "the shop")
