Balsams Sits Idle While Otten Fishes for More Investors

by Steve MacDonald May 8, 2017

Remember the fight to block taxpayer-backed loans for Les Otten’s Balsams Boondoggle? The legislature and then Democrat Governor Maggie Hassan gave it their thumbs-up*. Well, it’s still sitting idle while Les hunts for more private investors. That’s not a good sign. But this is. As for my asterisk, the $28 Million is in the hands of […]

by Kimberly Morin August 11, 2016

On Friday it was reported by New England Ski Industry that the amount of taxpayer-backed funding now being requested by Les Otten for the Balsams’ “renovation” is $40 million rather than the original $28 million. Another twist in the ‘Balsams Boondoggle’: The financing scam

by Kimberly Morin May 9, 2015

On Wednesday a huge majority in the New Hampshire House voted to pass Senate Bill 30 aka the “Balsams Bill.” The bill allows “unincorporated places” to become a tax district, which also means they can now get funding from the state and have all taxpayers foot the bill if the deal fails. Of course, many […]

North Country Writer Points to Springfield MA Casino As Proof Of Something…

by Steve MacDonald August 20, 2018

A north country writer made the case today, in the Union Leader, that the opening of a new Casino in Springfield, Massachusetts is proof that the casino market is not oversaturated in New England. I spoke with someone who has lived most of their life around Springfield with deep ties to the community, and the local […]

by Steve MacDonald July 11, 2018

You probably didn’t know this but in an offline thread Skip and Jim Rubens traded debate ‘punches’ on Mr. Sununu’s veto of Biomass subsidies. We have opposed the plunder. Mr. Rubens considered the Biomass bailout to be worthwhile. In an email, via Jim Rubens.com, Jim gives a nod to that debate and perhaps others and then defends his […]

As we entertain ourselves with Les Otten (pictured above) and his ‘North Country’ revitalization promises–and the political hoops bureaucrats and legislators in New Hampshire are jumping through to please him, we get this in-depth investigative reporting on VT Democrats. How they ignored financial risk and promoted fraud (and a Ponzi scheme) in exchange for promises […]

Crony Bail-Out Legacy Bill Before The NH House Today

by Steve MacDonald May 6, 2015
Thumbnail image for Crony Bail-Out Legacy Bill Before The NH House Today

SB30 would open the flood gates to taxpayer backed bailouts of private ventures.  This is not just about dumping 30 million on some rich white guys with a dream in the North Country; a dream more likely to fail than not by the way (otherwise they wouldn’t need public money would they?).  This is also […]
